What were the recommended newsreader programs to filter junk?
Over 1000 entries of junk in the last few days.

I use news.eternal-september.org as my news reader and Thunderbird as my
email client and have seen precisely two spam messages in the past
week.  A couple of mouse clicks creates a filter which blocks the
sender's email address.  Other rules can be created to block various
other characteristics of the spam. Sarah Anderson has written at least
two very good descriptions of how to implement RAS via a news reader.

Dan meant he uses news.eternal-september.org as his news server, not as a reader.
Thunderbird does the news reading. You can also use the NewsTapLite app (from the Apple
App store), which works nicely, but just on an iPhone/iPad.

I was just able to setup an account on eternal September and connect with
the newsreader app "PhoNews". For those who need an android solution.
