It's been a lot of years and I'm far too lazy to go looking, but
i distinctly recall it being old news that pterosaurs had
something that looked very much like "Proto Feathers."

AND. this was believed to be involved with thermal regulation,
them being flying reptiles and needing to retain body heat in
order to be active...

The rule was; if it's on a dinosaur then no matter what it looks
like it's a feather or, if absolutely necessary, a proto feather. If
it's on anything else then it's a hair.
