A few years ago I bought a cheap cell from China. I hacked it to become a highspeed computer modem. As it turns out -- this was fortuitous because my long-term ISP, I'd been with them
for 30y or more -- suddenly decided to switch off their service to my area ~6m back.

I have monitoring s/w running just waiting to see if it does anything strange. So far no packets coming in or going out seems to be anything I didnt send or ask for. In 6m of looking it hasn't "phoned home".
