While it is possible that something will happen to turn it around, the depeering of Google Groups will vastly accelerate a trend that has been going on for many years. There have been fewer and fewer open nntp servers that are functional, and I think that it will likely go to zero in the not-too-distant future. So, that is another reason I do not want to invest my time and energy in continuing on here after February.

It has been quite a wild ride, ever since I discovered how to access online mailing lists and newsgroups when I was in college. I know that some people here did not like my opinions or my posting style, but I was really shocked at the time how vindictive some of those people could be, even going as far as doxxing me. Anyway, those people are gone now, so it does not really matter. We all will be gone soon. 'Everything dies,' like the Ninth Doctor said.

I will always have fond memories of the Adric Awards and Quote Files and Newbie FAQs and other rituals that are no longer even practiced here. I remember when we vigorously discussed fan theories that later became canonised in the books and TV show, like Season 6B and Morbius faces being pre-Hartnell incarnations. I will even miss some of the inane flame wars that we had over continuity. I will not miss the stuff that got personal, though, and even though I have no regrets about punching back after I was hit.

This group will always have a bittersweet legacy. We have about two months left before our comments here stop being archived. So, we have everything from An Unearthly Child up through The Church on Ruby Road to discuss, and well as any leaked spoilers and speculation. Let us try to go out on a high note, even we think that Doctor Who is already dead and that the writers are just engaging in . . . squirting necrophilia. >:-)

People posting to RADW via the Google Groups interface were never the
main contributors to RADW anyway. In fact most of them just posted
spam. One of the two biggest posters of spam here used Google Groups
to post his random spam daily without a care to the damage it was
causing and it was reckless posters like him that have eventually
contributed to Google Groups severing it's link to Usenet.

RADW losing the Google posters is not the end of the world. As we all
get old and die off then this group will probably die too, that much
is true, but RADW won't die just because we lost the one or two
genuine posters who choose to use Google Groups as opposed to a
newsreader and nntp service, like the majority of us do here.

There are free news servers out there and free newsreaders. If you
choose to depart Usenet, it'll be a shame. But RADW is going nowhere
in the immediate future...

....by Google.

Others in the community are attempting projects that archive Usenet
posts.

One such archive - it's a work-in-progress - 'Narkive' is a Google
alternative for reading posts to some of the bigger groups. It's not
as comparable to Google's archive, but Google had twenty two years to
get where they are today. (There are a few other similar projects
being worked on. Limited in nature at the moment but being worked on
by committed Usenet enthusiasts. So there is hope for the future.)

FWIW, here is our Narkive... bookmark this link and you'll be able to
follow the random utterances of us post February 2024.

https://rec.arts.drwho.narkive.com/

Our comments will live on, probably for as long as RADW lives on.
There is life after Google Groups and all this doom and gloom from
people who think Google is the be all and end all is madness. Google
was NEVER Usenet, it was just a gateway. The Usenet community will
step up and fill the void in some way, shape or form.

I can accept that the text based part of Usenet has declined on a lot
of groups over the years as web based forums and then social media
took off - and some newsgroups literally are dead - but while there
are still people posting here Usenet lives...

I am hearing that a few people are coming back to Usenet from Reddit,
X and Facebook (etc.) because of the toxicity on those places. But
your actions probably don't encourage newbies to stay on RADW for
very long. So if you want RADW to thrive for the new season of Doctor
Who curb your spamming.

Usenet was already on the decline in 2007. In 2023, it is just a shell of its former self.

Thank you both for those links. I never knew about those archives until today.
We shall see how long they remain online and functioning.

I will check in on them every once in a while, but as I said, I am not going to spend one cent more than what I pay for standard internet service to be able to post to Usenet. I believe that is wrong and is a violation of the spirit of net neutrality if not the letter of it.

According to a Reddit post, UsenetArchive.com was opened about three
years ago (I thought it was much older than that). It's still a "work
in progress".

For the discussion based text newsgroups like RADW, yes. RADW is a
shell of it's former self.

Strangely enough though, Usenet traffic has been increasing year upon
year, and in 2023 it is way above what it was in 2007... and probably
the highest it's ever been! Obviously the binaries groups are the
main reason for this exponential growth in Usenet traffic. As they
have grown in usage whilst the text based newsgroups has decreased in
use. But Usenet itself is thriving, and regardless of how newsgroups
fare over the coming years, Usenet itself is not going anywhere.

I don't know who is asking you to pay to post to Usenet, if you are
just wanting to post on text groups like RADW then free news servers
are around as are free newsreaders. As are places like Nova BBS. So
it's your choice...

https://www.novabbs.com/arts/thread.php?group=rec.arts.drwho

Or, if you are interested...

Free News servers:

https://www.eternal-september.org/

https://solani.org/

Free Newsreaders:

https://www.thunderbird.net/en-GB/

https://mpgravity.sourceforge.net/index.html

So, no need to spend a cent more than you pay for your standard
internet! ;-)

Yeap, the oldest post showing on your link was 4th March 1987, advising
of problems with a feed to Oberlin College ..... with responses to that
post by this newsgroups two most common posters made in June 2015.

Might give me something to fill in my days!
