Tonight's episode is titled "Tiki Man." I just watched a couple of
previews. Looks like we're in for a cringe segment with Ben's tribe. The
other preview was of Q telling Kenzie that he's ready to quit. She then
tells us that she's fine with Q quitting because that would mean she's
step closer to the end.

Here is the episode:

https://eztvx.to/ep/2289356/survivor-s46e05-720p-hevc-x265-megusta/

We associate "Tiki" with Polynesia but here it says there is
a lot of Polynesian blood intermixed in Fijians as well!
Maybe they even have their own tikis.

The editing on tonight’s episode was very good IMHO. Episode flew by. We
seemed to get a bit of everything including a few unexpected moments. I
think we were also shown some things that are going to come into play
later in the season.

Hunter Finds Beware Advantage

I loved Venus’s brutal honesty in this segment telling Hunter that he’s
seen as a huge threat but won’t vote him out because he’s a meatshield
for her. I don’t recall a player in Survivor ever openly using that
term. I had to laugh when he read the advantage note (Venus didn’t see
him find it) and said something like “That’ll be a while given how the
other tribes are performing” in reference to the stipulation that he
can’t look for the HHI until after his tribe loses an IC.

Reward/Immunity Challenge

Hunter’s tribe finished first once again in the combined RC/IC. It was
no contest. Surprisingly, Kenzie’s tribe finished second. It took them
11 days to win something and get flint. Jeff said those are New Era
records. Is not getting flint until Day 11 not an all-time record? I
thought for sure Q was going to cause them to lose but he redeemed
himself at the end. It was nice to see them finally not lose, and get
flint. Was not having Bhanu around why they won, or did Ben’s tribe just
suck tonight?
Journey

After the RC/IC was over, Jeff told them it was time for another
Journey. Hunter’s tribe got to choose who went. They chose Hunter from
their tribe and let Ben’s tribe decide who they would send. Tim spoke up
so he got to go. Tiff and Kenz appeared to decide that Q would go from
their tribe.

When Tim, Q, and Hunter arrived at the Journey beach they discovered
that just one of them would play and that the task involved Survivor
knowledge. They chose Hunter to play. If he won, he would get an
advantage. If he lost, he would lose his vote. I was not expecting the
task to be to arrange 20 past game logos in chronological order. Neither
was Hunter as he got just 8/20 correct. Tim and Q had to leave as soon
as they agreed Hunter would play. We never saw any of them talk about
what happened when they got back to their respective camps.

*whispers*
This is why you should binge #Survivor in chronological order.
https://twitter.com/AMikeBloomType/status/1773151251116572881

It’s worth noting that Q pushed for an alliance between the three of
them and that they should each bring someone in with them so they could
control the vote post merge. Q said Tiff would be his person, Tim said
Maria, and Hunter Tevin. I have a feeling that Q’s downfall is going to
be Tiff. My sense is that Tiff is much closer to Kenz than she is to Q.

Jem

Going into tonight’s episode, I thought Jem was one of the smarter
players this season. Turns out I was wrong. She overplayed hiding her
Beware Advantage note stunt and it caused her to become overly defensive
which lead to the others losing trust in her. After about three episodes
with no lines, Tim came to life tonight confronting her about the HII.
She blew it when she said she didn’t know anything about the note.

I do have to give Jem credit for finding the HII. They made getting the
final clue extremely difficult, asking her to work out the perimeter
measurements of three areas using the machete and then having her do a
mathematical calculation.

Tribal Council (Night 11)

Jem also screwed up during TC. At first, she claimed that no one knew
how they would be voting but then had to change her tune when Tim (?)
said that people did know who they would be voting for. Jem was
blindsided by a 4–2 vote. It’ll be interesting to find out why Maria
wasted her extra vote when they had a majority of the votes. Did they
not trust Tim to vote out Jem?

I wasn’t expecting Jem to be laughing during her Final Words segment as
not only did she leave with an HII in her pocket, she also didn’t play
her SITD. Her confidence turned out to be cockiness and it bit her in
the ass.

Next Episode

Looks like it’s merge time but my guess is not until after the next TC.

I’m pretty sure that you are right about that.

He also revealed that the parchment had additional information that
had not previously been shared with the viewers. Apparently Hunter
will be provided with an alternative way to activate the immunity
necklace if Orange Tribe never goes to TC. I was reading the
parchment over Hunter’s shoulder, but was unable to make out
what was written at the bottom.

Yes. Also, for the record, Purple Tribe was nowhere near Survivor’s
all-time record for tribal ineptitude. In S10, the Ulong tribe lost eight
immunity challenges in a row, and was reduced to one member
(Stephenie LaGrossa). Clearly Kenzie and Tiffany know very
little about the games played prior to S41.

Probably the latter more than the former IMO. Green Tribe had a huge
lead over Purple Tribe when they began shooting their bean bags, but
let it fritter away. Even Probst commented on how slowly Tim was
moving compared to Cue.
The slow motion segment was cheesy as hell, and, instead of increasing
the suspense, gave away the outcome long before the final target went
down.

This was a terrible scene. Having to listen to some poor schmuck try to
talk his way through a puzzle that he had no chance of solving, accompanied
by cameos of Jeff Probst’s favourite players, was excruciatingly boring.
IMO, every “Journey” this season has been a complete flop.

We saw Tim telling his tribe mates what had happened on the “Journey”.
FWIW, Jemila said that she thought he was lying.

Yeah, Coach Cue explaining the game plan to his players. Of course,
we all know that pacts made before the merge never ever get broken :-).

I totally agree. IMO, the turning point was when she tried to
persuade Tim, Charlie, and Ben to tell her who they planned to
vote for. First of all, it was unnecessary as an agreement
had already been made to target Ben. And secondly, Charlie
overheard Jemila using the same technique with Tim as she
had with him. It was probably right around this time that
Charlie, Tim, and Maria changed their plan.

Yes, all those scenes of Jemila running through the jungle in her
fetching green shorts carrying the machete was the high point of
the episode for me:-).

Maria also talked about using the extra vote when the target was
going to be Ben, but I don’t recall her explaining her reasoning.

I was not expecting this outcome, and, after the votes were read, felt
that the viewers had not been shown the reasons why Maria et al had
voted in such an “unpredictable” manner. However, when I went back
and re-watched the pre-TC interactions between the members of Green
Tribe, the clues were all there. I had just not been paying attention.
I would also say that the Green Tribe story that had been pitched to
us in the edit was one of harmony, with the only moments of tension
occurring after Jemila used the “Beware” advantage packaging as a
means to manipulate her tribe mates for her own amusement. However,
in even the most harmonious social group, there is going to be
somebody who doesn’t quite fit in, who is not quite as socially adept.
On Green Tribe, that person was Jemila. It’s possible that eleven days
of living together was needed before her tribe-mates figured this out.

They have to give him another way to activate the immunity necklace
given that it looks like they could be leaving their campsite.

That's not surprising. Both seem like fans of the game but not diehards
who've gone back and binged past seasons.

Jeff was pretty funny last night. His playful shot at Yanu being losers
might have helped to inspire them to not lose.

I agree. They need to focus on giving us more content that helps to
explain the actions players take.

Yes, you're right about that. It was another error on Jem's part.

Q pushed that alliance way too hard as far as I'm concerned. Hunter

She played too hard and got sloppy. Using the same technique must have
made it clear to the others that she didn't trust any of them.

We'll probably find out at the start of EP06.

Interesting that you feel Jem didn't fit in with the others. I thought
it was Tim. In the Salsa lesson scene, it looked like he was disengaged.
He was also nearly invisible the three episodes before this one. His
connections with Ben, Charlie, and Maria must be stronger than the edit
has conveyed.

Last night also made clear that Moriah's connections are not that
strong. If the merge does happen next week it will be a Godsend for her
as it looks like she's on the outside of her tribe.

On a side note, have you noticed that when Jeff gives Hunter's tribe an
idol after an IC win he always seems to give it to Venus? I also noticed
last night that Soda didn't try to yank it out of her hands.I wonder if
something was said to her by a producer?

I think not a lot of guys would have gotten the Survivor
seasons in order. I'm a fan, I watch every season, sometimes
several times, and would have failed miserably.

So you not only have to be a fan to succeed, you have to be
a special kind of fan.

Also, too much arrogant meta-Survivor. But actually, there has
been pretty little of that this season! So it is okay, even
tho most people would say - I think - that challenge is
unfairly difficult to most players.

Nothing too exciting about this season but pretty solid
so far. Is what I think!

Yes, Tevin also received an extra vote because Dave Jelinsky
gave up only seconds into the game.

Ha Ha! It hadn’t occurred to me that doughboy Tim might be considered
a “meatshield” :-)

Katurah wore shorts of a similar style last season. I wonder if the female
players
have been given a directive concerning the type of spandex shorts that they
would
be allowed to wear during the game.

I was wondering why Jemila and Maria ended up as partners during the
salsa interlude when there was an equal number of men and women. At
the time, I just assumed that it was a personal preference thing.

In last night’s episode, Tim, in confessional, said that he and Maria had
bonded because they were both parents. So it seems as if Maria has
built strong relationships with each of the men on Green Tribe. Smart
game play on her part. I would consider her to have a realistic chance of
making F3.

> Last night also made clear that Moriah's connections are not that

I’m not so sure about that. On the few occasions when we have seen
the members of Green Tribe interacting, Moriah looked to be right in
the middle of everything. Early in the game, in confessional, she talked
about being a little socially awkward, and had worried about whether she
would be able to fit in with a group of strangers. Given what I have seen
so far (which isn’t much), I think she is very well liked, and probably
assumed that she would be safe working with Maria and Jemila. IOW,
I don’t think that being left out of the planning for the E05 vote had
anything to do with how she was regarded by her tribe mates.

Venus always seems to position herself in the middle of the group when Probst
is approaching with the idol, so it might just be a case of him giving it to
the
person who is right in front of him. In E04, I noticed that after Venus
received
the idol, she immediately gave it to Soda.
Still on the topic of Venus, it's remarkable how different she looks now that
all the
make up has been washed off her face. She could pass for a student in junior
high
school.

I would have probably done even worse than Hunter if
given the chance to place the seasons in order. I’m
pretty good at matching winners with their seasons
(either by number or name), but, beyond S7, I would
have no idea of the correct sequence.

I would have been screwed on that challenge. I tend to remember seasons
by their number. Season names only stick with me if it's something like
Game Changers or I really liked the winner. But the names do help
overall to help distinguish seasons. For S41 onward I find the seasons
are often too similar so I try to remember them by one or two memorable
players. Or by stupid twists such as the Hourglass.

That's right! We need to see more of that tribe as it looks like there's
a lot of drama waiting to explode.

I know all clothing has to be approved. Kind of strange that this
appears to be a recent thing. You'd think wearing padded shorts would be
a no-brainer for a number of reasons.

At one point, Tim had his back to them and appeared to be writing
something in the sand with his feet. Probably, "this is fucking stupid!"

Does she have a strong relationship with Ben? She was ready to vote him
out at one point. She and Charlie are definitely close and it looks like
the others are not aware of how tight they are.

She's probably well-liked. My sense is that she doesn't have strong game
connections with the other four.

She did look noticeably younger last night. I just looked up the ages of
the cast and boy were my assumptions wrong. I thought Tim was in his
early 40s. Turns out he's only 31 and younger than Tiff who's 33. I
thought Ben was about 40 and he's also just 31. I thought Kenzie was
like 23 but she's 29.And Jem's 32?! I thought she was way younger. The
entire time he was on I assumed Bhanu was mid-50s. Turns out he's 41. Is
this the season where the girls look way younger than they really are
and the guys way older?

Padded shorts, why would you wear that on Survivor?

For comfort when sleeping?

Padded shorts are a thing for cyclists, maybe there are
other applications.

Or maybe you are just mocking her for having big thighs...

For comfort when sitting and sleeping. Remember the scene where Q was
bitching about how uncomfortable the bamboo is?

I could be imagining this, but I thought I heard one of them qualify their
statement with the magic words "in the modern era" or "since Survivor 41" or
something like that. Jeff also reiterated that later.

Clearly, the world was very different back in S10 where there were only two
tribes of 10 each and they merged much later (at nine, if I recall
correctly) so there was an opportunity for several more pre-merge challenges
than in the "modern" era. Interestingly, the last TC before the merge in
S10 there were only two players left on that tribe - Steph and Bobby Jon -
so I recall they had to settle that with a fire-making challenge, which I
think was the first elimination fire challenge in the show's history. I'm
sure the producers allowed for that possibility this season as well. Had
the medical evacuation not occurred and had Yanu lost the last IC, there
indeed would only have been two players left, so we would have no doubt seen
a replay of that S10 pre-merge fire challenge.

Jeff definitely said in "the new era." I'd have to go back to confirm,
but I'm pretty confident Tiff and Kenzie made a blanket statement.

The good old days of just two tribes. Back in the S10 days juries were
also smaller.

If Yanu had gone down to two players I think they would have done a
tribe shuffle down to two tribes of seven for a couple of boots. Doing a
pre-merge fire challenge elimination would devalue the fire challenge at
F4 which wouldn't look good.

The only thing that argues against this is the often made statement that the
swaps and merge points are decided in advance of the season and aren't
influenced by the order in which players are eliminated. The show is,
after all, technically a game show and subject to FCC rules blah blah blah,
so the producers can't give the appearance of changing the game on the fly
to benefit certain players or situations.

I could not have done it for the simple reason that I remember the seasons
mainly by their season number rather than location. I can easily match all
the winners by season number, and I can even do it by theme, like Game
Changers or Blood vs, Water or One World, etc. But if you ask me who won
Survivor South Pacific or Phillipines or San Juan Del Sur or Kaoh Rong, I
probably couldn't do it. I can do all the early seasons like Thailand and
the Outback, and maybe Palau and Guatemala and China, but once you get into
the 20s and 30s I'd be dead in the water if I had to remember locations.

I do find it funny that Survivor 1 is now called Borneo, since it was never
called that when it first aired. It reminds me a lot of the Star Wars
Movies. The first Star Wars Movie (Episode 4) is now known as a New Hope,
but it was never called that when it was first shown.

I know I would struggle with some season theme winners. IIRC, there were
multiple Blood vs. Water seasons and I can't recall the winners even
though I can recall some classic moments. I know South Pacific is Sophie
and Kaoh Rong Michele because they are two of my favorite players. S25
to S29 would probably be my worst stretch of seasons. I think Denise won
S25 and I think Andrea played again during that stretch. I also can't
recall which seasons Jeremy and Natalie Anderson won. Do you know off
the top of your head which season Fabio won and who S15 and what the
theme was that season? S15 to S19 would also kill me.

First season they probably wanted to focus on the show and had no idea
that it would turn out to be such a huge hit and run for at least 48
seasons.

OK, off the top of my head and without checking...

Fabio won S21 but I couldn't in a million years tell you what that season
was called. S15 was Survivor China, won by Todd Herzog. I remember that
one pretty well because I really liked Amanda a lot and was devastated that
she came in second. One of the players (Denise) was a friend of my niece,
so that helps that one stick out a bit for me. S16 was Fans vs Favorites
(Micronesia, I think) won by Parv with Amanda finishing second two years in
a row, an amazing accomplishment. That was supposed to be a Final 3 but I
think medical removals (James?) mucked that up and made it a two. S17 was
won by Bob Crowley, but I can't remember much else about that season except
that he was really good at making idols. I think Sugar was in the finals,
but not sure who else. S18 was Tocantins, won by JT over Stephen Fishbach.
S19 was the first Russell season, won by Natalie and I think it was in
Gabon? S20 was Heroes vs. Villains won by Sandra over Parv and Russell, but
no idea where it was filmed.

Ok, now I will check my results...

I got all the winners right, go me! But I had totally forgotten that Amanda
did not finish second in S15 - Courtney did and actually Amanda came in
third. So much for my Amanda-coming-in-second two years in a row
recollection. Amanda is much more dominant in my mind than Courtney, so I'd
have to back and figure how Courtney possibly got more votes than Amanda.
Sugar was indeed in the finals for S18 but got no votes and came in third.
I barely remember Susie who is listed as coming in second. Again, this is a
case where Sugar stands out in my mind than Susie who I only vaguely
remember. S19 was Samoa, not Gabon, but I did get the winner and runner-up
right. S20 was also filmed in Samoa which I didn't specifically remember,
but I knew the two seasons were filmed in the same place. Side note: if
you asked me to identify where Samoa is on a map, or Gabon, for that matter,
I couldn't tell you. And S21 (which in my mind is one of the two or three
absolute worst seasons of the show) was Nicaragua (and I do know where that
is

I think if you listed all the locations the show has been filmed at and
asked me to approximate their locations on a map, I could maybe get half to
two thirds of them right at best.

I would have got Fabio's season right and that S15 was China. Like you,
I totally forgot Courtney finished second in S15. Now my mind is blank
concerning S14. Was that the season Aras won? I remember S13 because it
had such an amazing cast. I would have got S17 and S18 mixed up but I
remember Bob's season being in Gabon. I also know where Samoa and Gabon
are. I would have worked out that S19 was Russell's first season because
I know S20 is Heroes vs. Villains. I would have drawn a blank as to
where S19 and S20 filmed other than it was the same place. I'm with you
concerning Susie and Sugar. Now that you've mentioned them I seem to
recall that Sugar pissed off a lot of people that season.

I would do better on such a task than on putting the seasons in order.
Soon, I won't be able to list the New Era winners in order. I had to
think for a minute to recall that Dee won last season which is pretty
bad considering that just finished airing only three months ago.

I already have trouble with New Era ordering Erica and Maryann. Looking
that up reminds me that Erica was 41 so Maryann was 42. Working backwards,
I can do Dee and Yam Yam going in reverse for 45 and 44. That means Gabler
must be 43 by default, but I don't really remember that clearly. Once a few
more seasons roll though, that will all get jumbled.

I couldn't begin to tell you the names of 2nd and 3rd place finishers each
season. I can prob do 44 and 45, but not 41 - 43. I know Xander is in
there somewhere, but no idea where.

S43 I remember because there was so much to dislike about that season.
Cassidy and Owen, finished second and third thanks to a bitter jury. S41
and S42 were way too similar and both winners were under edited. I
remember Zach from S42 despite him being in just two (?) episodes thanks
to his brother being on BB25 last year and ending up with the real grand
prize--America!

Xander? All I remember about him is that he and Andrea dated for a while.

Do you remember Maddy? I wish they would have brought her back for S45
instead of Bruce.

Nope. I just looked up that season and see she was the first person voted
out after Bruce left, but I have no recollection of her. In fact, scanning
the list of early exits that season, I don't really recognize any of the
pre-jury exits by name other than Matthew who got hurt.

A clear case of illusion of grandeur from the producers.
They interact so much with "superfans" of the show now they
think people are also into memorization of Survivor trivia.

The only people likely to be able to that matching game are those that
have a perfect memory. I can't imagine anyone else, even a fan of the
game, bothering to memorize all the seasons. After all this isn't The
Amazing Race where the flags of all the countries they visit in a
season often comes into play.

As you REMEMBER there were challenges that tested the players
memory, but not relating to Survivor trivia.

Those challenges were pretty interesting - I remember I was
impressed by how many symbols they could remember, as they
beat me, I, contrary to them well-fed and completely relaxed.
