Agree completely. Bernstein is far too OTT and his melodrama looks silly on video.

His first Mahler cycle, wonderfully improved sonically, in a set with the LP covers reproduced on the CD sleeves, is my desert island one. Bernstein had a tendency to drag tempos indulgently in his later recordings, and in general his earlier work in the 50s/60s were his best. As for Boulez, I prefer him as a composer to him as a conductor. If one is playing Mahler, then why give the works over to an analytical surgeon, devoid of showing excess emotion, which imho negates the whole idea of Mahlerian performance. Tennstedt ran Bernstein close in Mahler.

I prefer Bernstein's Mahler 1 from the first cycle to any other Mahler
1. I think it's the toughest of the symphonies to get right. There's
too much opportunity for a conductor to go hog wild, or not wild
enough. It's all elbows and knees.

Having said that, Tennstedt's live Mahler 2 with the LPO with Yvonne
Kenny et al, is as close to perfection as I've ever heard. I'm with
you, Ray, I like the energy and tension of an emotional recording.

Exactly, manufacture a "controversy" and you get a ton of free publicity.

nonetheless, the nose isn't going to cut it.
if the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll content isn't foregrounded there is not going to be a big audience.

There is an excellent Slate article on the "controversy" here:

Hollywood? "Mahler" was a British film, and Amadeus written by a Brit
playwright and directed by a Czech. You are being too protective of
Andy's sensibilities. :)

How anyone can suggest Ken Russell as an answer to the question is beyobd

Didn't mean to invade the Czech republic over Amadeus. I can
commiserate with Andy mostly because of the majority of bad films about
music, like "The Eddy Duchin Story" and most of the "please interrupt
my practicing for a torrid love affair which will help me win the
competition" and the like. I haven't seen "Lisztomania" yet, but I
intend to at some unannounced date to keep the secret police from
breaking into my home and stealing my DVD player.

Purely a matter of taste, probably my lack of.

Absolutely hated "Whiplash."

Letter From An Unknown Woman is just such a "torrid love affair" with a pianist, but it's actually a good film - Joan Fontaine and Louis Jourdan. The music is rather incidental, which is probably the most reliable way to incorporate musicians in films.

What about "Tous les Matins du Monde"? I recall that as being rather
absorbing.

Nothing wrong with your taste, but Lenny's best Mahler is entirely winning, whatever the visuals - at least to my ears. (Yes, I also like Tennstedt and other conductors willing to dial things to 11.) You actually hear something objectionable in the New York Mahler 7? And I'm not picking that one just because Boulez's is stone-cold, but because I can't really imagine anyone who likes the piece not finding that an exceptional performance.

Do Mahler lovers ever agree on which are the best performances?

Wit on Naxos does all the orchestral works very well. There is a box available, but I have them singly. Lutoslawski doing Lutoslawski is also available on Brilliant but I'm not sure if it as comprehensive. The Naxos notes are very good.

I've seen a similar attribution error on another group. Maybe a google
problem?

The four symphonies of Albric Magnard, the BIS recordings with Thomas
Sanderling conducting the Malmo Symphony Orchestra. I haven't listened
to these in a number of years, but they are all well worth hearing
and re-hearing. I regard #4 as a masterpiece, and would put the
second half of #3 in the same category.

The music is French lagte-romantic, on the Germanic side of things
(Magnard was a student of d'Indy). There are places which sound
more like Mahler than like anything else (e.g., in the first movement
of #4). Ironically (?) Magnard died after shooting a member of the
invading German army whom he found on his land. The retaliatory
fire also destroyed much of his work. I'm a bit surprised that
the Berlin Philharmonic digital archive contains no Magnad.

Performance are very fine, always convincingly paced, and the recorded
sound seems excellent.
