What files land on your computer and how
they are stored depends on the source of
the files (e.g. YouTube), as well as the
software used to download them. I use
the 4kdownloader. It provides a choice
of formats (e.g. mp3, mp4a, etc..). It
can download not only infividual files,
but also playlists and entire channels.

Temirkanov's Tchaikovsky Symphonies are
in this playlist:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLt_iN-ytBvZwFXQXiejGQIEShomBz_5Bx

Paste this link into 4kdownloader, pick
the format (I would siggest mp4a), point
the downloader to a folder on your PC,
and click the donwload button.

On Windows downloaded files go by the
default into ...\My Music\Palylist_Name,
however one may choose a different folder.

Thanks for reminding me of Temirkanov.
This is a superb set of Tchaikovsky
symphonies. I am listening to them
right now.

Enjoy!

Thx mucho. They are up there with Markevich, Mvravinsky and a few
others. For a great Scheherezade, Temirkanov's effort with the Leningrad
PO is well worth hearing (not the one he recorded with the NYPO). Quite
a refined effort, save for the usual Russian brass at times.

He was a conductor that was a joy to watch, not using a baton, as this
link shows.

What you will download from your 'basket' is a zipped folder containing all tracks plus a pdf version of the accompanying booklet if available. This will arrive in your 'Downloads' folder. When the download is complete, right click on this folder and select where you want the unzipped files to go. Each movement of each work will then appear as a separate file in the codec selected (mp3, flac, high-res flac). Organise them into folders, store them on a hard drive, burn to CD if you insist, and back up as required (I use Google Drive).

I don't know what Mac users have to do: I suppose they have to convert from FLAC to ALAC.

Hope this helps,

Andrew and Ermintrude Clarke

I should add that I do not have WinZip installed on my desktop. I suppose there must be some kind of unzip program built into Windows 10/11.

Importing into Music (formerly iTunes) will do this.

VLC will play FLAC files on a Mac with no need for conversion.

Thanks to all. I bought the Temirkanov/Tchaikovsky set (flac) download,
and was surprised at how easy it was. I used the Presto app. which
allowed me to nominate a folder into which the files went, and after
hitting a few buttons, the downloads proceeded.
When I looked inside the folder all the music was there, all separate by
movement. And yes, I am using VLC which allows me to use the flac files
directly.

I have to say, that as a first, having been a CD collector for 40 years
that this could be addictive. Sans the physical experience might give me
a few twitches, but I will survive.

It is built into Windows Explorer on Win 11. You just have to click on
the file you want to unzip. However the Presto download ended up with
the files already unzipped as flac files.

Yes indeed, Windows 10/11 can unzip files.
It is however less flexible and has fewer
features and options for the user than
does WinZip. The latter is almost free
if one shops carefully.

Happy unzipping! ;-)

Google Drive seems to be secure from attacks by either dingos or kangaroos. I can't speak for Taree, but surviving grasslands in the Australian Capital Territory do attract kangaroos in summer, when they come in to find fresh food and water, but not dingos. Highly poisonous brown snakes and black snakes can occasionally be found in Australian suburbs, especially if they too are looking for water when there's a drought on, but pythons capable of swallowing a CD whole do not come this far south.

The only alternative, here in Australia's federal capital, would be to buy CDs by mail order, as there are now no record shops here for the discerning listener. Quite apart from the convenience, you are going to discover how easier it is to store and retrieve recordings - my Scarlatti sonatas are in Kirkpatrick number order - and how much more portable it is. I keep a copy of recordings of music from the classical period on an SD card on my mobile phone, which I can Blue Tooth to a pair of what Jeremy Clarkson would call a reasonably-priced pair of Sony headphones.

If I do find an interesting CD in an op shop in a country town - Bowral has a very good one - I still rip it and add the resulting files to my collection.

For playback I use Media Monkey on Android appliances and JRiver for Windows. The latter is completely gapless, whilst the former is so nearly gapless that I don't notice the discontinuities.

As I have a reasonably large collection, rock and jazz also, the very
thought of ripping the whole lot to PC files, is not the least bit
attractive. I will instead, insert a blank CD case and cover in my
collection for music files I have on computer.

It is the realisation that the "physical" CD is now almost a rare object
to purchase, that led me to buy the first downloaded music files. Our
local Sanity shop disappeared 6 months ago, so buying the physical thing
isn't an option anymore. In addition, the CDs can still (almost) be
obtainable on Amazon or Ebay, but usually at greatly jacked up prices.
Also Presto has a lot of good deals for downloads only.

In fact I will probably just burn the PC files to blank CDs. I am still
thinking about it.

And what do you plan to do when all your
CDs have oxidized (bronzed)? They don't
last forever. Their longevity is in fact
lower than LPs'. Decently stored LPs do
not rot by just sitting around. CDs do.

Cheers!

On arrache les yeux de la tete ... I'm afraid Presto charges 13 euros for the latest Adam Fischer Haydn as a FLAC file. Have you tried e classical in Sweden? https://www.eclassical.com/

Right composer, right conductor, wrong label ... I was referring to Adam Fischer's ongoing series of recordings of the late symphonies for Naxos. I'm surprised that Nimbus or their successors hasn't been onto Naxos re what is a clear breach of copyright.

We don't know that is the case.

First, Naxos may have licensed the
recordings from Nimbus or from their
successors.

Second, it is possible another party
published them without permission and
Nimbus or their successors did not seek
to enforce copyright. If this happened
copyright lapses after a while.

No need to jump to conclusions.

Cheers!

This is a new Haydn symphony series with the Danish Chamber Orchestra,
being recorded for Naxos. The same conductor, Adam Fischer, recorded the
previous set of Haydn symphonies for Nimbus with the Austro-Hungarian
Haydn Orchestra.

I don't know why Adam Fischer has decided to record them all again, as
apart from not some not so good reviews about the late London
symphonies, the Nimbus recordings and performances were pretty good,
especially the middle symphonies.
