It's looking like I can press Back and Forward
keys (B, F) to step through the message list,
and Next and Previous for unread messages only.
But if I go past the last current message, then
suddenly I'm reading something from 2013.
Returning to 2024 isn't straightforward because
I'm using a Windows tablet in portrait orientation,
and a lot of keystrokes and other actions
are awkward.

Just speaking generally here, but it seems to me that any Back/Forward
facility that loops in /one/ direction, so that 2013 is "Forward" from
2024, should loop in the /other/ direction as well.

Not saying it does in this case, of course, but only that not being
able to do so should be regarded as a Design Flaw.

Perhaps you can request a change ...

Thanks, I figured that out.

Now, if I could just get it to display thread updated since I was last
on, without them being buried in pages of dead threads....

Cool! That pretty much solves the problem for me.

I'm running the Linux version which I would assume is the same.

After some initial hiccups, I'm pretty happy with TB on Win 10.

I use Thunderbird for e-mail (on Win 10) but not for newsgroups - but
then I'm interested in binaries. Have done for 20+ years and the only
time I've been unhappy is with the current version since I strongly
dislike the collapsing of threads in the current version of TB.

(And would be obliged if someone could tell me how to turn it off)

To read in new messages, right click on your Usenet server in the
left-hand pane, and select "Get Messages".
