It's good to hear that it isn't only Ambridge with a functioning GP service.

You can get an appointment? We are lucky if they phone us. I was in
the surgery recently for a blood test (they have not yet worked out how
to do those online) and it obvious that no-one was seeing a doctor.

I got a letter from my practice a couple of weeks ago, asking me to make
an appt for a blood test, giving me a number to ring. Letter arrived
11.15 am.

11.45 I called the number. "We have appointments from 2.50 this
afternoon."

"Fine, I'll come then."

Blood sample taken. The practice phoned two days later with the result.
All well.

I got a blood test date 2 weeks ahead, wait a week to ring and check
results, get reception and have to book a GP phone call to discuss,
which can be another week.

I forgot to mention that I should not have been in the surgery at all.
I had a blood test earlier in the month and they were supposed to test
everything and when I was giving blood I asked if they were (the test is
mainly for my sugars for the diabetes but I always ask for the rest to
be done so that they are available). She assured me that she was doing
everything.

When the results came back there was no report for sugars as that test
had been missed.

So the only one I needed was NOT done - hence another visit.

I was texted with a request to make a face-to-face appt. with a GP to
discuss my blood test results. I was glad because I am NOT GOOD on the
telephone. Turned out to be with a locum GP who was everything one
could wish for in a doctor. Unfortunately he says it might not be him I
see when I go back again in 2 weeks after next blood test.

Yes about 2 orr 3 years ago I had some falls and they yanked me in to
see a GP who turned out to be from A&E and was presumably adding to
his pay or training on GP stuff. He was very good. Ordered bloods and
went tocheck with other GPs. I notice when I speak on the phone it's a
new person each time whogoes to check with another GP.

Locums etc. can spot things. My Grandma had been going down and down -
not so much health (though I guess that too), more outlook: she was
getting more and more miserable, to the point where visiting her was
getting more a duty than a pleasure. Then she went to see the doctor
when her usual (from all accounts, a sort of Dr. Finlay) was away, and
the locum spotted she had a thyroid problem (over or under active, I
forget and it doesn't matter), and put her on something suitable - and I
got my old Grandma back, cheerful to the end.

Similarly, I joined Colony Holidays on FB on behalf of Sid to look
something up for him (and then encouraged him to join himself) and had
never unsubscribed and blow me down if the other day someone posted a
pic of a letter sent in the early 70s from the house next door to where
we used to live in Bedford !
I contacted the lady and it turned out they had moved elsewhere in the
town in 1978 and we moved in there in 1986. It's a very small world.

Me too. (Not good on phone) Since the surgery is only fifteen minutes
walk away, I never phone them but walk there instead. I'm not sure how
practical that might be in future since it's fairly certain that if I
became not very good on my legs, my phone skills wouldn't suddenly be
enhanced in compensation

I have just realised that none of the people at my GP pracice are the
same as the ones working there when I signed on in 2013. None of them.
I wonder if seeing a new member of the team each time carries any of
the benefits of locumhood?

Yes I have an underactive thyroid which means need bloods done
regularly as dosage changes. The effect of no medication can be very
bad. They only give me 4 weeks at a time. And I'm not convinced the
dose has been right for years, but don't like to ask for a specialist
referral.

I've just made contact with an old primary school friend whom I
haven't seen since, well, primary school. I read a letter in The
Guardian from a familiar-sounding name and did a little clickety-click
and we have since exchanged a few reminiscences. Not just about
primary school - our paths since have been surprisingly parallel.

Come on Nick, play the game with the rest of us; you are supposed to wait
on the telephone to be told ‘you are 25th in line’ and then watch the
minutes clock by and by and by….. You will hear the same sets of
announcements every 30 seconds or so and in between will be subjected to
some awful muzak. But don’t worry, your call is important to them….

Being told your position in the queue is so late last century - I seem
to remember it _was_ quite common around the turn of the century, so
it's not rocket science; however, it seems to be a lot rarer now.

On the whole I don't mind awful muzak _that_ much (though if it's
distorted, that grates, as I'm a ex-electronic-engineer); what grates
far more is spoken exhortations to use the website. Which, obviously, I
am not going to do if I'm waiting on the 'phone. OK, tell me once - but
don't keep repeating it.

Being "on hold" in that way is perhaps the one thing that'd tempt me to
get other than a PAYG mobile contract: I have anytime 'phone calls on my
landline, but (like most such) they're only free (or rather uncharged)
for the first hour (then they go to tens of pence a minute). If calling
a friend I can hang up after 5x minutes and redial, but obviously not
when on hold; I don't _think_ I've had a hold that took that long, but
I've certainly had one where I was anxiously watching the clock (I think
I finally got through to a human after 5x minutes).

But it'll all probably go different anyway when POTS ends and we have to
go VoIP - anyone here already on that and can tell us what sort of
calling plans are on offer?

Our surgery has had a complete turn over in personnel in the time we've
been here.
I suppose it's understandable, since that was 1980.

her as a little girl when we used to see her Dad up at the park playing
tennis.

How quaint, still having a landline. ;)

I don't waste any time while I am in the queue on my mobile - I am also
