My father's mantra, which I try to stick to, was never discuss politics
or religion.

Which is why, yesterday morning, some God botherers left my front door
with a fleas in their ears. Also I was cooking my wife's breakfast
before she went to work. I did not need a lesson from the bible.

So I do not always manage to keep to that mantra, but I do my best.

I'm afraid I consider the door-to-door bible-thumpers as fair game. I talk
to them reasonably and calmly, with logic rather than fervour, until they
start edging off down the path looking for a way to escape with dignity.

Agreed! Once, when I was much younger, someone knocked on the door at
09:00 on a saturday morning. Since I was young, I was mildly annoyed,
since I'd been out drinking til late the day before.

It turned out that 2 super models from Jehovas Witnesses wanted to bring
me the joy of Jesus at 09:00 on a saturday.

So I told them, being a philosophy student, that I was not quite prepared
for the debate due to the early hour, but invited them back and then we
could debate the existence of god in an academic and thorough way.

They thanked me and never ever returned. =(

I spend the extra to buy coke in bottles and drink from a clean (ie
unused since last washed) glass glass. Whether the coke objectively
tastes better that way or it subjectively tastes better, who knows?

What does upset me is that the bottle can only be recycled as cullet
rather be re-cycled to be cleaned and refilled. There was a time when
soda bottles, lemonade, cola, milk bottles etc had a deposit on them
reclaimable when returned to a retailer (who may or may not have sold
the original filled bottle.

This scheme was *far* simpler than the current scheme with complex
machines printing vouchers to be redeemed but probably wouldn't suit modern
siops which are mostly horriblemarket style and scanner dependent.
