How do I print a screen showing detail from a CD?

Herts. CC Tithe map. Original display size prints ok but enlargements
invariably revert.
PrSc? Does that need Alt key as well? What then?

PrtSc on its own for the whole screen, Alt + PrtSc for the active window.

Personally I use FastStone for screen capture, crop, print and so much
more. Currently using version 9.7 so not sure how much has changed in
the latest 10.4 version.

Hmm. I thought I'd tried all likely alternatives. It might have been
opening in Acrobat and I don't have the paid version. I'll have another
go tonight.

Just use Paint.
Works well for screen shots and can change encoding, shrink, etc.

PrintScreen will capture the current (logical) screen to the clipboard.

If you want to actually print that, you will need to past that into
something that can handle bitmap images (like Paint etc), and then print
from there.

PrtScr+ALT just captures the currently active window, rather than the
whole logical[1] screen.

[1] Logical in the sense that windows support multiple monitors if
desired, and you can have your windows desktop spread over several
physical screens. PrtSc on its own will in those cases capture more
that one physical screen's worth.

(so for example, if I use PrtSc on my machines, it grabs a 5120x1440
resolution "screen" - which is twice the width of one of my physical
screens)

Are the contents of the CD, simple files like JPG ?

Or is it encoded in some fashion, like some sort
of medical imaging CD ?

This makes a difference to your ability to get
the best possible pictures from this project.

I use "Lightshot" that allows you to select an area of screen.
https://app.prntscr.com/en/index.html

It uses a single press of the PrtScr button. You can copy [CTRL_C] and
paste [CTRL-V] a screen area of your choice into an application. I often
paste into Paint from which you can save as a jpg or png file.

Only if you have the snipping tool enabled - that might not always be
the case on Win 7

(snipping tool also has an editor that will let you save the snip to
disk without needing to past it into another app first)

Not been keeping up on this. The original issue was to print off a map
section, enlarged for clarity.
The job was for a neighbour who seems happy with the lower resolution
copy.
W7 does not have *clipboard* and the keyboard with a PrSc button may not
have been supplied with the original PC (re-furb).

Thanks for all the advice but please remember I'm at the agricultural
end of computer knowledge:-)

Win 7 had a clipboard. As has been said pressing PrtSc or Alt+PrtSc put
the image on the clipboard from where it can be pasted into a program that
accepts graphics data.

PrtSc to copy to clipboard is standard (has been there since at least
Win 3.1!)

(The "Snipping tool" was a later addition - possibly not in win 7)

Does W7 have a 'screen snip' facility? Oh yes, I see it does
https://tinyurl.com/yc7tdnjz
I use screen snip on Win 10 a lot, often for doing just what you want
to do, copying a section of the Tithe Map (or other OS maps). I can
save directly into the Word document that I am preparing, or to a jpeg
file and then use it as, when and where I want, sometimes using
Photoshop to enhance what can be a rather pale and flat image.

Hmm. *search programs and files* fails to find anything called
*clipboard*
Snipping tool is found.

Yes! Just found:-)

It's easy enough to test. Open Paint then come back to this post, press
Alt+PrtsSc, go back to Paint and press Ctrl + v.

Clipboard is not a "program" as such - but the name for the shared
"cut'n'paste" buffer that is a part of windows.

Hence you can copy or cut information in a program, and paste it
elsewhere. This works within one program - say moving a section of text
in a word processor, but also works between unrelated bits of software -
say pasting text from your word processor into notepad, or a form on a
web page.

It also works with graphic data. So open a program that can handle
pictures and create a new empty document if necessary. Press PrtScr.
That will capture a snapshot of the screen and hold it in the windows
clipboard. Now select "paste" in the program, and you should be rewarded
with a picture of your desktop pasted into the doc.

So for example, if I press PrnScr + ALT while this windows is active,
and then open Paint, and do paste, I get this :

OK, I see the problem.

I wasn't aware of this, and thought all Clipboard Viewers were third party.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/where-is-the-clipboard-on-windows-7/3bf718eb-5c47-e011-90b6-1cc1de79d2e2

"Unlike XP, the clipboard cannot be viewed in Windows 7. <cough>

You need a copy of clipbrd.exe from an XP computer. It is located
in C:\WINDOWS\system32. Copy it into the same folder in Windows 7
and to run it, click the Windows Orb (Start), type clipbrd and
press Enter."

In normal parlance, the clipboard is a software structure, an
"intermediary between programs". You don't need to view it to use it.
It uses ctrl-C to copy and ctrl-V to paste into the second program.

On Windows, the clipboard can contain multiple instances, and when
you paste to the destination program, the destination may only choose
to accept one of the types as the chosen type. This occasionally
causes problems, if the way a paste is handled is not correct.
Sometimes you use three programs in sequence p1 --> p2 --> p3,
where the p2 program changes from one representation to the
desired representation when you Copy-Pasta.

In this made-up example, I am trying to get across the notion of
multiple representations. In the real world, it doesn't do this,
but I needed to at least show that ctrl-C can store three representations
in one go, if the Program1 chooses to offer such a capability.

__ clipboard
/ JPG "Paste"
Program1 _/ PNG ------------------ Graphics "program2" that "likes" PNG particularly
TIF

Clipbrd.exe then, is something to show the contents in the middle column.

There should also be third-party clipboard viewers.

I could try a Google search such as

alternativeto Clipbrd.exe

This is the canonical reference, but other Google entries
may be more precise than this scattershot article (too much Mac...)
I didn't ask for Windows 10 either.

https://alternativeto.net/software/windows-10-clipboard/

You can see that Windows 10 programs go too far, and
I would not touch this with a barge pole. We don't want
to share our clipboard with Balmer, the bloody thing can
stay on the computer thanks.

https://alternativeto.net/software/windows-10-clipboard/about/

So now at least, I understand what you're looking for.
I just paste into GIMP, and carry on with my day.

For example, say I do PrtScn (which I do on occasion). If
I open GIMP paint program, I know my screen happens to be
1440x900. I do a New File, and tell it the resolution of my
new file is 1440x900. When I do ctrl-V in there, the screenshot
fits precisely within the painting window boundaries.

GIMP also happens to have its own Screenshot tool.
File : Create : Screenshot. It uses a helper application
for the actual screenshot.

If you use the MS Paint and do ctrl-V in there, then the
copied image should at least partially appear, if not fully
appear. If the window resolution is wrong (like on my example
of 1440x900), if you know the resolution of your monitor
at the moment, that's likely to be the clipboard image size.
The destination tool then, needs a window of that size (1440x900)
to fully get the effect of the paste.

*******

This is what I use for simple image work. This older version
does not have quite as much confusion over "Export" versus "Save"
that the newer versions do. The newest version, the decoration
of the screen is "steam punk" and over the top. I don't really
want to use a program of this vintage, but I don't have much
say in the matter.

https://download.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v2.6/windows/

gimp-2.6.8-i686-setup.exe 17.4 MiB 2020-Mar-19 13:21 \___ 32-bit OS
gimp-2.6.8-i686-setup.exe.md5 60 bytes 2020-Mar-19 13:21 /

gimp-2.6.8-x64-setup.exe.md5 59 bytes 2020-Mar-19 13:21 /

I do a File:New, set the image size to 1440x900 (the size of my screen),
then when I do a ctrl-V and paste into the blank window, my screenshot
from the PrtScn button appears.

Unfortunately (I didn't know this), Tim is right.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/where-is-the-clipboard-on-windows-7/3bf718eb-5c47-e011-90b6-1cc1de79d2e2

The confusion comes from Tim seeing this in WinXP.
And thinking that clipbrd.exe from WinXP is essential.

Clipbrd.exe is not necessary for day to day computer
usage on any Windows OS. Just PrtScn, then ctrl-V to paste
into the image editing program of choice.

ctrl-C on Program1 ctrl-V on Program2 # Copy and paste an item

PrtScn (screenshot) ctrl-V on Program2 # Put the clipboard image, into the image editor Program2
# PrtScn has loaded the clipboard for us

On some OSes, pressing PrtScn triggers the execution
of a screenshot or Snipping type tool, and so rather
than the OS having a built-in behavior for loading
the clipboard, instead it kicks off the execution
of a "helper" for the job, complete with auto-saving
the resulting file in Pictures.

Generally, screenshot tools don't handle file naming
all that well, and much time is lost offroad, dealing
with that aspect. All my screenshots are "tagged" with
keywords for later access with a find-type command.

Just out of curiosity, what sub-type ?

Wondering what reagent they're using now and what it senses.

When they were giving away detection kits six months
ago, the "guy" didn't even know what the detection kits
detected. It should say, somewhere, what it is armed to detect.
With constant mutation, there's no guarantee a test kit
can detect everything.

Despite all the vaccinations, your protection wanes with time.
There is a long-term part of your immune system, which this
particular vaccine does not train. COVID is not a human disease.
Our immune system (with the exception of some "special" humans)
is not a good match for the disease. There are a few humans,
who unlike yourself, have absolutely no worries in this regard.
They could not catch SARS, MERS, or COVID.

Neither is the H5N1, which should strike... any time now.
It has recently hopped species, and will be our next candidate.
(AKA the old bird flu.) Normally it does bird to bird, and
we kill the bird flocks. But this time it did bird to animal.

"biohazard sites", where you dip your Wellies in bleach.
