OK, I have given it a go. At the BT box (which is not installed
to BT rules, but that goes back before I moved in) I simply
disconnected the incoming pair.

I then connected the "R" lead from the second phone socket on the
Virgin 3 Modem to a nearby wired phone socket, plugged an old
phone into a different socket, and nothing happened.

Experimenting further, if I plugged my lead instead into the
first socket on the modem, in place of my DECT base station, then
the wired sockets all worked as expected. Interestingly the DECT
station also does not work on the second modem socket.

So, I could get the house wired system connected up, but
currently I would have to connect the DECT station to the same
network.

I think that is as far as I am taking it right now.

Theory proved, unexpected snag discovered.

Thank you Chris, very useful to know that! I have a V3 Modem/Hub (don’t use
the wifi facility as we take the ethernet signal to a MESH system to
distribute a,round Toodle Towers), on which there are two sockets marked
for phone (21cv VOIP according to VOTR) and in one reply they tell me
these can both be used if I have more than 1 phone line - from this I take
it the second one would only work if I was paying for two lines). Now as we
have just the one line, it suggests to me that some form of splitter would
be required to connect a DECT phone *AND* a ‘reserve’ adaptor for the old
landline wiring to be connected into. It remains a point of conjecture as
to whether this may or may not work!!!

That is the same Hub that I have, also in Modem mode. I hadn't
appreciated that the second phone socket is for a second line.

At least if my DECT phones fail, a quick swap of cables will
allow me to use our one working wired handset around the house.

I do have a splitter/adaptor, but the DECT phones didn't seem to
like it, though I didn't investigate further.

Thank you Chris, it rather sounds as though the ‘phones can see one step
ahead of us to prevent us being too clever by half! ;-)))

Given that Drax is near Selby in Yorkshire how is that on a route to
Liverpool?

Half the woodchips for Drax are imported via Liverpool Docks, so there's
often a train of wagons with Drax written on them parked by the main
line into Liverpool.

So I’ve managed to see. I didn’t see. I thought I heard. It’s taken a
huge effort to see what stations there might be between Crewe and
Liverpool.

Perhaps it is time I came clean; Umrats may have noticed more than the
usual number of typos from me recently. I contacted my doctor many months
back but on each occasion, I have had to wait weeks for a phone
consultation, a blood test, a note to tell me my platelet count was low and
I should wait 5-6 weeks and then have a re-test. Then I had to wait for the
result, make another appointment for a phone consult and wait some more….
The next stage was make an appointment with the optician, then wait for
result to filter through to GP….. Meanwhile my sight had reached the stage
where I am struggling to read ANYTHING at all! Mrs.McToodle laid her foot
down - GO TO EYE A&E …. This I did and found that due to the Blepharitis
that I have been experiencing for several years, my dry eyes had reached
the stage where a film of calcium has built up on my pupil so I am on
medication upteen times a day until it clears and have a NHS consultation
in a month or two to see how things have progressed. Meanwhile please
forgive my extra unintentional trypos.

Oh how rotten, and also deeply annoying. These things creep up on you
until you suddenly realise that they are upon you and need immediate
attention. I hope the anti-calcium (why does calcium build up in the
wrong places and not stay in your bones and teeth where it belongs?
Huh!) meds work speedily. It must be so difficult in this glaring sunshine.

Love from cloudy Edinburgh

And from me.

FWIW, I didn't see _any_ typos in your long paragraph, apart from the
one at the end above that I assume was deliberate.

Whenever I hear the word "medication", I think of the Barron Knights'

I've recently acquired a solar panel to keep my car battery charged (I
hope) - I have occasionally had problems in the depths of winter as I
can go ages without using the car, but I really acquired it in case of
the rather longer prolonged absence I may experience soon that I have
mentioned. Anyway, said device, as well as the lead that plugs in the
lighter socket, has a couple of USB-type outputs, for that sort of
thing. The (tiny, chinglish) instructions suggest if used for 'phones
that I use a powerbank rather than direct, which suggests that the
voltage etc. regulation is poor.

The device cost about 13 quid - less partial refund (it was supposed to
come with four suckers to stick it to the windscreen, but only came with
two; the seller offered and I accepted a partial refund. [The suckers
don't work anyway, but I just rest it on the dashboard). So no great
expense.

(Note it's _not_ the sort I had from years [decades?] ago - a sort of
two by twelve inch strip, made of some sort of bobbly surface that
suggests it might even be selenium-based, which produces such a tiny
amount that I doubt it'd keep the computer running in a modern car.
[Well, FSVO "modern" - mine is a 56 registration so about 17 years old,
but I still think of it as modern - it certainly has things like remote
locking and some sort of computer.])
