I spent a career at a company that makes gas turbine engines. It was a
great job, playing computer games modeling engine parts in 3D. But it
was tough being pro-environment in a company that depends on burning
natural gas. My excuse was that we made the cleanest, most ecologically
friendly turbine engines in the industry.

It seems, yet again, that I'm in a minority in finding fulfilment through
work. That's not to say that the psychopaths I worked with didn't do
their share of damage to me.

It had its moments, when I was able to look at something good that I'd
achieved, especially when working on critical parts of new drug
development.

Same here. I did have a few moments where I felt I was doing something

No they are public sector, and I do get a sense of reward, and doing
something useful - actually providing a public service.

I've found much of the work I've done over the decades to be
rewarding, in a personal sense. But that doesn't, for me, equate to
"a sense of purpose". But maybe that's what Steve meant

I did mean 'sense of purpose'. Something that was (I felt) key
to who I was and at the time, that stuff I was doing had real
importance in itself and that I was making a difference by doing it.

A significant part of the reason I got up in the morning beyond the fact
I was paid.

It's one of the things I struggle with a little now. Or, more to the point,
struggle with the lack of.

Ah, well we do have a fundamental difference in outlook, then. I've
always known that everything I've done at work is essentially
pointless, and none of it made any real contribution to the sum of
human happiness

You might have put your finger on it. One of the reasons I've
probably 'lost' [1] 5 jobs in the last 6ish years (ulp!), is that,
while I did manage to get out of bed and get to work, I wasn't exactly
justifying my wages. I think I might have invented 'quiet quitting'
early!

Conversely, I've now got lots of things to do that I want to do, and
will make an actual difference to my life!
