After a number of years mostly away from umra I am dipping my toe in the
water to see if I still like to spend time here.

An update on my life is needed, partly to explain why I'm toe-dipping
and partly so you can just catch up.

In the last three years I have lost both my parents and, very recently,
my final Mike (who was actually known as Mike 2 because of when I first
met him). We had known each other for 30 years and been an 'item' for
six. We didn't live together, but spoke two or three times a day and
spent at least a week together every month. Of all the people in my
life, he was the best friend I ever had, brilliant, interesting, full of
humour and silliness and the most honest even when it hurt. I am
struggling with the grief. Mike had multiple myeloma for five of our
six years so after we resumed seeing each other when the worst of Covid
was over I continued to avoid many public situations and found also that
my friends had drifted away.

When my parents died they left me (as an only child) everything, which
as they lived in Henley at the time of their deaths was quite a lot. I
am spending it on rebuilding a lovely house elsewhere in Stroud,
future-proofing it - no third floor studio, underfloor heating, lift,
etc. It will be beautiful and I know how lucky I am to have been left
the money to do it.

But coming from an army family, it's been a big surprise and a wonderful
thing that I've lived in this house for more than half my life - 35
years. Most of the major events in my life have happened while I've
lived here. This week it's going on the market, and I am grieving for
the house too.

Oh yes, I got Covid immediately after Mike died. So only just out of
that and starting to grieve. Quel irony!

Did you want to know all this? Most of you, probably not. Some of you
already know it from another place. But for anyone who has read this
far, it's a sort of self-introduction, not as a newbie of course, but as
an absentee.

I am delighted that you might not be an absentee any more, Jane! I
sympathise with you for all your losses but wish you every happiness in
your new home. Do stick around - we all benefit from a bit of Purple in
our lives!

Once an umrat always an umrat so I cannot say welcome back - because you
never left - but it is a pleasure to read your words and to hear your
news - the good and the bad - because knowing each other makes us closer.

Here we celebrated 34 years of marriage last week and we spend a lot of
time on holiday so there are disappearing and re-appearing acts from
here quite frequently; next up is Corsica and Sardinia followed by a
visit to the Deep South and more holidays are booked. Also we are lucky
that health wise nothing too awful has happened as yet (touches wooden
bonce bone) and can still get around to most of what we want to do.

And we never had covid as far as we are aware!

And talking of umrats I recently heard from Mike Brown who remains on
Air for some hours every week with CHBN in Truro (Friday afternoons if
anyone wants to join us) - although he admits that he no longer listens
to The Archers. He is not 100% at the moment healthwise but against
that he has also moved and has a new partner - who delivers cakes whilst
he is on air!

Lovely to see you PP and I hope we can interest you enough to stay
around, but it's often a very quiet place these days. I'd seen the photo
of your kiln being moved so knew something was happening, so good to
have the update.

Really sorry to hear about your losses. Parents you expect, not that it
lessens the loss, but losing someone like Mike 2 leaves a huge hole in
your life. [[[hugs]]]

Good to see you here!
I was aware of most of what you've been going through, but you've just
filled in a couple of gaps.

I took a look at your new house on street view recently but had no idea you
were remodelling it to such an extent. It looks like a pleasant
neighbourhood, right on the edge of town. Have you met all the neighbours
yet?

May you spend many happy years there, and continue to visit umra too.

Ouch, all in three years is really nasty. I/we lost my parents but with
a much longer gap, and have probably lost my best friends through stupid
action on my part (they're not ill).

I know what you mean - I/we had a sort of army background (Dad was
civilian but attached to an army unit), and when I sort of entered
adulthood, was looking forward to _not_ moving a lot. (It was the ~1980
property boom when it seemed to be _expected_ that people even in
civilian life would move about every three years. I wanted none of
that.)

"Absentee" suggests you've been AWOL and have to apologise. You most
definitely don't; welcome back, and I hope you stay.

There is always a large amethyst in a bishop's offical ring. They are
actually supposed to prevent hangovers in the first place, no matter how
much you drink. Also stops poisoning, much the same thing in the end, I
suppose.

Pauline Devaney's attempts to get the BBC to commission that show even though it had been written by a mere woman were dramatised in "All Mouth and Trousers" on BBC Radio 4 and IMO is worth a listen next time it turns up on R4x.

Lightly?

I used to go for intensive Spanish lessons from a teacher who lived in Santos Lugares[1] which is just over the border from the city of Buenos Aires in the province of the same name. As well as teaching she also offered light therapy. People could come to be healed by being bathed in light which had been passed through the appropriate stones. She also sold bottles of water which had been bathed in the light of those stones.

I only went for the Spanish lessons.

[1]Literally "Holy Places." The town had been built around a full size replica of Lourdes Cathedral and grotto which in themselves became a place of pilgrimage.

A pilgrimage from their to the original Lourdes Cathedral could be
problematic (or just a boodly long way).

My good friend in Kent was persuaded to take her elder daughter to Lourdes
in search of a miracle - the child had suffered brain damage and subsequent
other problems from a dose of flu at the age of two (her brother, in utero
at the time, also suffered similar problems - he didn't go to Lourdes).
They didn't find a miracle, but the daughter is now in her late 50s (her
brother died a few years ago).

So whatever imbues the original Lourdes with Special Qualities, imbues
replicas too?

I think Penny has it. Cement is cheap and plentiful and France is a boodly long way.

As they might say on the BBC "Other shrines are available."

I think there's little doubt that the people who built Lourdes did so because of their faith and it means what they built it to mean. The people of Ituzaingó, further away and to the north west of Buenos Aires city, maybe not so much. They have built replicas of the leaning tower of Pisa and the Eiffel tower.
