it's French plonk from VdP d'Oc with a stupid name, which usually means
mediocre wine with an inflated price

there are some great wines from SW France but if the Domaine is not willing
to put their name on it ...

The mere name would put me off ever drinking it.
Dogs Bollox beer has the same effect.
A tacky name to hook the punters.
Good luck to 'em.[1]

Dog's bollocks equates to cat's whiskers and is well ensconced in the
language.

Fat bastard is too, but I can understand your reluctance to encourage it

Elgood's Black Dog has unfortunate connotations <Winston Churchill qv>
but *THAT* (mild) is the dog's ^h^h^h^ whiskers.

Quite the opposite IME. Recent years has seen a lot of good priced,
decent quality stuff being produced there. It's not a premium brand
region, so prices stay low and much of it is bottled or bixed by
Supermarkets under their own brands.

Been drinking Pays d'Oc Chardonnay from Lidl as our day-to-day white
for a few years now after doing some blind tasting alongside a couple
of Petits Chablis, where it was actually the preferred choice of three
out of four of us.

Elgood's Black Dog, being from East Anglia, is probably referencing
'Black Shuck' - hellhound, portend of death, etc.

That may well be the source of the 'depression' usage though.

That, exactly. Elwood’s brewery is /was just along the road from my old school, drank a lot of their stuff back in the day. The head brewer was a school mate’s dad

Having recently listened to the 2-part edition of Origin Story [1] on
Churchil [2], I can tell you that:
- Winston Churchill almost certainly didn't suffer from depression
- there's only one recorded instance of him using the phrase "black
dog", and that was in about 1910

[1] Absolutely bloody brilliant. Like listening to a couple of your
smart and well-read mates explain something.

you snipped the bit where I said SW France produces lots of decent
wines. Those stocked by Lidl etc usually have the name of the Domaine,
Negociant, Co-op or winemaker on them. Often it might just be the Fxxxxx
number of spmene like Calvet.

It's the wines with silly names that I am dissing.

yes, I was drinking a Tesco Chardonnay earlier this week. A Vin de
France but the maker had put their name on it. It was very drinkable.

Not over here they don't. Lidl and Aldi buy in bulk at source, then
finish production, bottling etc. centrally at their own plants in
Germany, so the only names on the bottle/box are their's.

Furry muff. Just like the awful branded stuff that used to hit the UK
market back in the day, Piat d'Or and the like. Not good enough for
the French, so they ship it off to Britain where they won't know any
better.

They've been selling that in the largest Dutch supermarket chain for at
least the last 6 years. It's OK IMO but I usually move onto something
else after a few bottles and then come back to it after a year or so.
Might be just me, but I find it has a very mellowing effect as opposed
to some other wines and beers which are more "come out fighting".
Supermarket here lists the supplier as:

A Dutch tomato grower once told me - The top quality goes to Germany
(prepared to pay for quality), the medium stuff stays in Holland and
the rest goes to Britain (cheapness a priority).

my son is working in Durban SA. He told me he was in a Japanese restaurant
yesterday drinking Fat Bastard Sauv Blanc made in SA.

Seems there is a SA version that also uses a hippo logo

no indication of the origin as being connected so maybe plagiarism[1]

'Swhy I like to grow my own. Now immobile-ish I tried to grow some on my
windowsill last year, resulting in three tomatoes the size of - um -
hazelnuts..

I'm now having a porch/conservatory put on the house so I can grow
things like tomatoes, chillies, peppers, cucumelons, cucumbers etc.

Some local farm shops have excellent produce.

Note to tomato fanciers: *NEVER* keep the fruit below 6°C: they lose
their flavour, and it doesn't come back whatever you do.

They both mention Thierry and Guy?

True, but expensive. The difference between store-bought and
grow-your-own tomatoes is vast, and well worth the small effort. You can
find other veggies cheap enough and with decent flavor, but tomatoes? Oh my.

FWIW, I also grow passion fruit, persimmons, cherimoyas, oranges, dragon
fruit and avocados (they are being a bit difficult, though.) Some of the
exotic fruits can be found selling for >$5 each, which makes them worth
growing.

Most, if not all of those can be grown in the (sheltered) British
climate: there is at least one avocado which is growing somewhere in
that London, and which fruits reliably (reportedly). Oranges - most
varieties - wouldn't, though I'd think Seville oranges might.
Passionfruit do, but can have 'bad years'. dunno about the rest.

I favour tomato varieties Ailsa Craig, Shirley, Alicante. Moneymaker's
only fit for using as missiles.

My lean-to greenhouse is a third of the size of the stand-alone one we
had at the last place. Still jolly good for raising salad crops in trays
(can't beat a young lollo rosso), cherry tomatoes (Sweet Million this
year - OK but not as good as 'Sungold') and courgettes (Defender for the
win).

Save tea and coffee bags (dried), sow with mustard & cress or similar
and keep watered. Sandwich-sized crop for easy snipping.

Downside is nosy neighbours thinking you're tight.

Coffee bags so treated can be compostd. Not all teabags can.

We shall be in Sussex next week and there is a Pick Your Own farm
nearby. Their raspberries are next level, I think mainly because you
can pick them ripe, ie. when you touch the fruit on the bush (oohher
missus) it falls off in your hand and you have to eat them the same
day. When the plums are ripe they are similarly delicious.
I think it is the pre-ripe harvesting and
packaging/transport/distribution that ruins a lot of fruit. Hard and
tasteless.

Yes indeed. I chopped-up an avocado yesterday - been 'ripenng' in a cool
place for about a month, andstill as hard as very hard thing and tasty as
a flavourless thing.

I threw a punnet of flavourless plums (less 1⅞) poisoned by
non-washoffable squits-inducing insecticide so no great loss.
