I have a very dim and distant memory that someone here had one of these. We
seem to have a major onslaught of flies at the moment and I'm confused by
all the different choices. Any recommendations?

There is one installed in the kitchen of Toodle Villas; we have the type
that has a UV fluorescent tube horizontally situated behind a nice welcome
high voltage wire mesh that the insects can just put their little
toots….fffffiiiiizzzzzttttt oh! Bye-bye fly! The size is approx. 14 “ wide
by 10 “ high by 4” deep in old money. The plate on the side does not give a
make (what a surprise on a Chinese made device!) But says Model ‘Compact’,
Power 40 watts, Tube 15 watts UV x 300mm T5. ISTR that when I bought it
through that long South American River that it was then called
‘InsectoCutor or somesuch, but, that was a few years back now (10 or more!)
It is such a satisfying ‘ZAP Phizz Bzzzt Pssst’ when an insect is attracted
to it…. ;-)))

There does seem to be such an onslaught. I'm wondering why - I can't
think what they're eating in this room.

Sally, were you thinking of the thing that looks like a tennis-racquet?

Though both sorts mean you have to dispose of the corpses eventually.
Though I have no affection for flies, I'd be perfectly happy if they
could be persuaded just to go outside (and be food for birds etc.).

I dislike flies in the house, but I have a spouse who leaves external
doors wide open for several minutes at a time - and then wonders where
those flies came from?

Some lessons will never be learned, but I do wonder what it is that
makes these particular lessons un-learnable.

erme- I use very natural, very organic fly-catchers. Spiders.
No electricity required. I welcome them into the house and
try and make them comfortable and hope that they will stay.

I help them out of the shower, warn them not to stray into
the toilet and always leave the mat draped over the edge
of the bath so they can get out by themselves without
feeling humiliated by having to ask for assistance.
House cleaning involves carefully sucking up the old, dusty
and discarded webs and trying not to disturb fresh active
ones.

And the result? No houseflies in my house. Well, one or two
maybe but they don't last very long. I don't know whether
that is because my spiders gobble up all the hoards of
houseflies or whether the spiders emit some kind of
theremin[1] that warns the flies to stay away. Whatever it is
it works for me.

[1]Theremins? Obviously not theremins but something similar.

Pheremones, Shirley, but talking of theremins the grandkids are
fascinated by the theremin pillars in the hands-on section of the
Science Museum and I keep suggesting they should visit a real one in the
Bate Collection of Musical Instruments in Oxford.

Probably they sound like a theremin, as they wave their little legs over
the web. Possibly an Ondes Arachenot.

Though the thought of spiders playing theremins is rather fun ...

Over the last few years I've been enjoying the playing of a Hungarian
lady, Katice Illenyi, who I suspect is the current world's best on the
instrument - and also a leading violinist! And what's more, she also
tap-dances! (And sings, though I think that's her weakest, but still not
bad - "Smile" is IMO VG.) For a quick (29 second) sample of all four:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Dz9Oi2Keug

Re-seeing this thread title again, I don't know where my crossword-doing
mind was: normally, on seeing "Electronic fly killers", my instant
response would be "but I don't have any electronic flies!".

Then it cut in again: for anyone who like the trainers (plimsolls) in
the film "Back to the Future" (or one of its sequels), the concept of
electronic flies is a little disturbing ...

The affliction is similar here when I am seeking to say something - but
in writing- know that there is a word and I have no idea what to google
to bring up the right word.

Yes, if you don't know what to look for, it's a lot harder to find!
>
>It often happens to me when speaking too. I lose words and names.

I've always been bad at names. In work, I tended to remember someone's
name - and function - by where their desk was; that, however, was no
help if I met them in the corridor!

I should put my mind to a technique I saw many years ago on TV: think of
some association, however silly. The presenter picked someone, and asked
him his name, which was Ash or Ashe (not sure if it was forename or
surname). He then looked at the guy, who had large glasses. He said,
imagine this guy with those glasses covered with ash (presumably on the
basis of the assumption that he'd always be wearing glasses). I thus
still remember the guy's name - and this must be decades ago. So the
technique works - but you have to invent the association!

For some reason I am not seeing Penny's posts and have just noticed that
this post appears to come from early tomorrow afternoon.
Could this explain it ? Anyone else have this problem in TB ?

Penny, could you check the date time on your posting machine please ?

I'm having the same problem with Penny's posts in Agent and in Google
Groups too.

I still haven't solved my Agent problem - individual posts (like this
one) and small clusters of posts will reluctantly download but asking
to download all just leave all of them stuck. I seem to be able to
send individual messages, though.

Just to compound matters, I'm in Canada but, unfortunately, my 2FA
isn't[1] and my Google Groups subscription seems to be the only thing
(so far) I can't find a workaround for. So I'm likely to be a little
on the quiet side in umra for the next couple of weeks.

<AOL> It looks as though giganews isn't propagating her posts to
eternal-september (and perhps to google as well), though why it is
propagating JPG is a mystery. He (and presumably others) can see her
posts because he is on giganews himself.

My latest from Penny is 3/9
I'm on the German server and use Agent. I paid to update it some years

right-clicked every object I can see on all the TB panels, but it's gorn...

Do you have the standard menu visible across the top:
File Edit View Go Message Events and Tasks Tools Help

Click View

Then threads

Then Threads with Unread

Or

Click View

Then Sort by > sub menu
lost list of options.

If you have turned off the top menu then top right there are three
little horizontal bars

Click

Select View

Select Toolbars

Select Menu Bar and that turns on the menu bar at the top of the screen
- go back to start of message.

No, I have no idea where it has gone or how to get it back...

TB version 102.15.1 was installed on 13th Sept. Perhaps that is the
cause of the problem....

If you have no standard menu, try pressing alt to temporarily get it
back or right click somewhere near the top and tick 'Menu bar' when the
dropdown appears to do it permanently.
