Stand by for Rant!

I need to take one 75mg aspirin tablet a day (long story, not relevant).
Running low I called at our local pharmacy (nationwide, name begins with
a K).
They charged me £7.56 for 100. I was startled never having had to pay
that much before, but needs must . . .
When I got home I went on line and found:

Express Chemist sold the same quantity for £2.65

Welzo sold the same quantity for £1.72

Boots on line sold the same quantity for £1.99

(our local Boots didn't have any for sale.)

Our local Superdrug sold a box of 100 for £3.49

Now one expects a local shop to charge more than an on-line supplier,
but here we have two local shops one selling at a mark-up of over 100%
of the other.
I called at K's with two boxes and their till receipts and was told in
effect "Don't ask me guv I just sell 'em for what the head office tell
me to."
I shall be writing to the head office of K's to see what explanation
they can offer.

Rant over.

Following myself up: While drafting my blast to the profiteering Pharma
I looked at the packaging and found that although the artwork differs
the manufacturer of the tablets is the same and the leaflet telling you
of all the nasties that can happen if you choose to use the product is
exactly the same in each box: they could be photocopies.
I see absolutely no reason why these items could not have been sold for
the same price (give or take a bit of loss-leading here and there.)

Is there anything special about 75mg aspirin? Do they have a special
coating to prevent them dissolving before they have passed through the
stomach onto the gut? Otherwise, would cutting a standard asprin
tablet (55p for 16 in most supermarkets and bargain pharmacies) into
quarters work for you?

I like to use Naproxen as a pain killer but since they are
prescription only for my conditions (OTC for period pain) going
through the doctor is such a faff that I simply put hundreds into my
shopping basket at Walmart in Canada and bring them home. A tub of one
hundred there costs less than a single pack of Aleve in the UK. Nobody
has ever challenged me upon re-entering the UK but my pre-prepared
defence will be that this seventy-something bloke identifies as a
fecund female and needs them to cope with menstruation.

I don't wish to make you feel even worse about this but I note your use
of "need to take". Can you not get them on prescription? Especially if
you have a sympathetic doctor who knows what you get charged locally.

My father had paracetamol on prescription in bulk and that was "take as
required".

I do that when I have run out of "properly divided" tablets, but at best
I get two quarters and a lot of crumbs.

I could but they (the 75 mg ones) used to be so cheap that it seemed
miserly to get them on prescription.

Maybe get a proper pill cutter? (I've no idea where one would look, but

Anyone else irritated by the blister-packaging now universal? No, I
don't have much trouble with it (other than the occasional one that
flies across the room), and am aware of the devices available that will
pop them for you; I just find it wasteful, and can't help feeling that
the companies (all of them) used the suicide risk as an excuse to use it
to bump up the price considerably. I remember when you could get bottles
of the commoner ones - such as aspirin or paracetamol (I think it was
before ibuprofen came off the Nurofen ripoff) - from Boots; certainly in
100, I think in 250. I think you could even get paracetamol-with-codeine
thus. Blue glass bottles, IIRR.

I suffered the indignity of being given a prescription for ibuprofen
well before I qualified for free prescriptions. And in insufficient
quantity to justify not going to Poundland.

I never trusted that GP again, since she either didn't read the notes or
was innumerate.

Mine dew, reading of notes seems to be a dying art, given the struggle I
had to make sure I didn't have the same knee injected twice recently.
Not only could they not tell left from right they believed February was
six weeks before September.

I think they trained at the same medical college (or whatever) as our
pharmacy staff; totally inadequate, innumerate, unable to communicate in
the King’s tongue, with no calendar awareness hardly begins to encompass
their shortcomings…

I was prescribed them in packs of 28. Everyone in Wales gets free
prescriptions so my reason for buying my own was both the convenience of
not having to order some every month, but also the ridiculous amount I
imagine it costs the NHS for the paper work on each prescribed drug, when
it was so cheap and readily available.

Nick's idea of cutting up larger tabs, apart from the difficulty of doing
it accurately, even with a razor blade device, is not great, as these are
soluble aspirins. I suck them, the normal variety taste horrid.

Could you dissolve them, then divide the liquid?
