I have a "bush hog" type mower that goes behind the tractor that's

similar amount of time to spin down. It would take any body part off in
a millisecond. I haven't used it in s a long time.

AIUI, chainsaw protective clothing works by releasing Aramid fibres into the
chain, jamming/stopping it almost instantly. Is that going to work with
your Ripper blade?

So ... a couple of inches above your wrist?

I can only think that your hedge trimmer is a different shape to mine.
But I might have to try mine tomorrow to see if that's anywhere near

I grew up on a farm and strongly feel that safety gear has no place in
a man's wardrobe. Having said that... My brother is lacking a finger,
my father can't straighten a couple of his. Various relatives have/had
missing fingers.

One moment that gave me pause for thought was when I noticed a deep
cut (from a chainsaw) in the sole of my steel toecapped boots. I don't
even know how, or when, I did it. Am certainly going to do my best to make
sure I don't do it again... And I really ought to start gathering wood for the
winter...

I use (used to use) leather welding gauntlets and steel toecap boots
when using chainsaws and similar.

When I worked in a dairy I always wore steel toecap wellies -
dairy-boots. Just as well: one of our customers let a full can (churn,
in England) of milk slip off a flatbed onto my foot while loading it on
- or not, IYSWIM.

He went *very* pale, and next time he came to collect his milk he
confided he'd bought a pair of steel toecapped dairy-boots like mine.

Helmet I've never worn except at work where they were de rigeur. Why you
should need a helmet when
a) processing chickens
b) freezing herbs
c) other jobs where exploding shells, girders being hoisted, rocks,
branches etc are liable to fall are not encountered

I just don't get.

Earmuffs, yes, leggings and padded upper garments when using powered
blades, yes, riding a motorcycle a definite yes. Before the days when
helmets on motorcyclists were compulsory, my Stadium Project 4 certainly
saved my life.

Only once, but...

My eldest has a job where he has occasion to use a chainsaw frequently.
Once he saw the incredibly gory 'safety first' picture of a blade/limb
interface at his place of work, he has never used a chainsaw since
without the _full_ kit no matter how hot it is, or how quick the job
might be.

That too

If we're talking ordinance and the range is variable, small pieces of
shrapnel, either from the device or bits of brick or dirt flung from
the blast. I dont know about explosives, but maybe also mitigates th
shockwave.

If a beam fell, sure, unlikely to help here, but easy to catch a
corner of a beam that's being hoisted. Having banged my head on a
literally rock hard mine roof (preserved, open to public) while
wearing one, they have ther uses.

The railway had similar films. Some were very simple and very
effective (a melon on a broom handle stick man representing a
shunter/driver's assistant between two engines was behaviour changing
on this 18 year old).

Some where the usual very dark 70s era British public information
films, just for the railway. I've blanked them out.

Others, were less effective and everyone knew the bits to shout out...

"The Three Sams" springs to mind (c. 1967). Still being shown on a
projector in the 80s.

The scene, an AC locomotive fails and grinds to a halt in passenger
service.

Sam #1 Panics and rushes around tripping sitches and pulling random
fuses (plunges into darkness).

Sam #2 Gets out, calls signaller then proceeds to tell the passengers
to fuck off and leer at the pretty girls.

Sam #3 calmly identifies the fault and fixes it.

Narrator: "Which Sam are YOU?"

Assembled train drivers "No.2 No.2 No.2!!!"

I had slightly misrembered it (date, order, and forgotten Stanley
Holloway did the narration).

A nice slice of history:
https://player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/watch-the-third-sam-1962-online

In fairness to the instructors who delivered my driver training these
old films were dragged out for entertainment value. Thinking about it,
the current equivalent would be watching a training film from the late
90s.

There was another featuring serving railway staff portraying the
characters - the acting was appalling. "oh, driver we appear to have
become derailed".
