Sorry it took so long to answer. AFAICT, it's not an Adventure. I assume
they have some tag somewhere on the bike that says so. Couldn't find
anything.

This thing is a real pain, though. It keeps killing batteries. After
it's turned off, something still puts a drain on it. After replacing the
battery, it still won't start. I'm ready to blow the thing up with some
explosives.

VIN lookup should tell you for sure, although someone here undoubtedly
knows what to look for.

Get someone (like me, or sleazy) who knows which end of a multimeter
is which to take a look at it. Could be many things, the secret of
finding parasitic drains is a 'divide and conquer' strategy. Basically,
disconnect a part of the electric system and see if the drain goes
away. Repeat the process on the non-zero portion of the loom until
only one load is still connected.

In the SOB days the first likely suspect would be the rectifier. Spent
weeks with a small switch inserted between the battery of a 50's AJS and
earth. Fine when running but flat within hours if left,

If a new fully charged battery won't even turn the motor over or light
up the idiot lights, something pretty major must be fubar, or will it
crank but not start?

Checked the side stand switch?
A mate's Corsaro 1200 played silly beggars on the IoM once. Turned out a
sensor thought it was already running. Popped it in to gear and shoved
it just enough to turn the the crank a tad and it then started on the
button,

Easy said than done, I'd have thought, with BMW electronics.

Pulling fuses one at a time would be a reasonable first filter.

Not *sure* the more modern BMWs have fuses.

At least my 2012 RT doesn't. It's got hideously expensive
modules that sense the current flow and disable if it's too
high. These have big looms flowing in and out (e.g. ZFE
module handles the chassis electronics) and if they go
wrong... heaven help you.

good luck with that on a bike with canbus where most circuit currents are
monitored by the ECU and disabled electronically

on my R1200RS there are 3 real fuses. 1 30A job on the starter circuit.

one always live feeding the watchdog circuit for the keyless ignition
system and alarm if fitted

one switched circuit for the tyre pressure monitors

Well, you're not wrong. It never looks that hard when you're peering at
the schematic in the ideal world. Once you leave the perfection of the
diagram and move into the real world, it gets a lot harder. Sometimes
just finding the connector you need to break apart can be a struggle,
and good luck finding shorts or opens inside a tightly wrapped loom.

There's something I've learned, that when you're the adult in the room,
and there's no one else coming to save the day, you're just going to
have to get the job done.

My first thought was like Pete's, a leaky diode in the
rectifier/regulator is probably the culprit.
