Yet another very irritating Amercanism; I notice in any Merkin YouTube
presentation involving electrical components, they are incapable of
pronouncing the word ‘solder’; there must be a very larger number of sods
in the USA! Harrumph!

I think they still _spell_ it with the l, though I'm not sure about
that.

When it came up recently with American cousins, they didn't know what I
was talking about, and were trying to understand where the soldiers came
in.

Yes, I find it very annoying too. I'm fairly certain they spell it
"solder". Apparently, their "reason" for saying "sodder" is that it
comes from the French word "souder".

They also, I believe, skip the five in a rocket launch countdown in
case their pronunciation is so awful that somebody mistakes five for
"Fire!!!!" Perhaps that's what went wrong with SpaceX on Saturday.

Has anybody seen Elon Musk in the past twenty-four hours? I thought
not.

I understood the launch went well and the "unscheduled disassembly" of
the booster stage occurred after separation from the next stage but
because they have been unable to make contact with that stage it is
presumed that it too blew up.

Far too many maybes in that for me so let's add another one. What if
the booster stage was deliberately blown up to disguise the successful
onward travel of the next stage... to Mars.... with his Muskness
aboard?????

AIUI we missed the best launch window for a journey to Mars and the
next one won't come around until October next year but...
....wouldn't that be just like Elon to insist on doing it the hard way?

You wai. In a couple of years time someone will unfurl a flag on the
Red Planet and rename it Planet X. I know about these things: I've
listened to Journey into Spaaaaaace!

I very much doubt it; I'd assume the French soudre and the British (!)
solder both come from a common root, probably Latin.

French has often dropped letters - sometimes initially adding a
circumflex accent which shows there was an s there originally, as in
their word for window, which comes from fenestra. Ah yes, as I thought:
Google Translate knows Latin, and translates solder as solidari.

The Old French word "soudre" means "to pay (or pay off) a debt". Quite
different from "souder" which means "to solder".

Indeed, and sometimes an acute is used, as in "étable", meaning "stable".

Ah yes, as I thought:
> Google Translate knows Latin, and translates solder as solidari.

Slight typo there. It's "solidare", "to make solid". First conjugation.

Chambers says:
Solder - from Old French soudre, souldure - souder, soulder, to consolidate
- Latin solidari - to make solid

The US pronunciation that bugs me most is the voiced embedded t - so
that water and writer come out as warder and rider. It's weird, as they
can pronounce the letter t fine if it's at the beginning or end of a
word, only not if it's in the middle, and I'm pretty ("priddy") sure
they don't know they're doing it.

Anybody can garble quotations like that -- even with the Bible... Er... "And he
went and hanged himself (Matthew 27:5). Go, and do thou likewise (Luke 10:37)."

Ah, the glo'al stop! I think of that as a regional British trait (not
sure which region - I think several). Though if it's a US one too, maybe
that's why the change of name! (Though I doubt it.)
