My father (90) was OK (ish) with using a computer with Windows 8. When that died we moved to Windows 10. His needs are few, just a browser to do online banking, a few emails and a bit of er... browsing.

Got a call that the computer wasn't working, so went and took a look. It seems he's upgraded to Windows 11 (but isn't aware that he did it, I guess one nag too many and he clicked 'ok' instead of cancel). Now Chrome loads, slowly, but isn't able to connect to any websites.

Edge works, so it's something about the computer.

I've tried reinstalling Chrome (but not de-installing it first since I wasn't sure about the saved site passwords etc.). That's made no difference. I've tried running window's compatibility checker (I think that's what it's called) on Chrome and switching on Windows 8 compatibility; also no joy.

The problem we have is he's forgotten the password to his gmail account and to the best of my knowledge there's no backup account for them to email a reset password and he's stopped using his mobile so the number's gone.

There was a problem (I read) in June where a Windows 11 patch broke Chrome. I suppose I could make sure the version of Windows 11 is bang-up-to-date?

Any other suggestions?

My sister-in -law got upgraded to Win11 unknowingly - I only realised
when I was clicking on the bottom left of the screen and just got the
weather!

What exactly is the aversion to Win11? I have it running here on a few
PCs and seems to be no better or worse than Win10 that I still have
running on a couple of other PCs. On reflection it actually seems to
run a bit better.
Also running OK on a thin client with an AMD GX-217GA cpu so old
hardware doesn't seem to present a problem either. Looking back, people
always seem to be hell bent on retaining the previous OS, before this
it was WIN8 and 7 before that. I remember people spitting on XP when it
first came out and then later swearing by it when when Win7 arrived.
I can understand if you are using old software that won't tolerate the
newer OSes but surely anything that can run on 10 will run 0n 11.
OK wait a couple of months when it first comes out so you are
reasonably sure it's not another millenium/vista flop but
hey........it's free after all.

However it does require a TPM security module and CPU newer than approx
2017/18, there's ways and means around it, but they could pull the rug

The big difference - to some - is that NTVDM is supported on Win10 but not
Win11, so old DOS .cmd type executables and some (all?) 16-bit software
won't run. 'Go back to the vendor for an update' is never a realistic path.

3rd party NTVDM-a-likes are available but it's a faff compared to native
built-in.

As far as I could see it was less functional probably for the reasons you
outline if run from a VM. For the foreseeable then my installations are staying W10.

I think the writing was on the wall for that one when they pulled the
plug on the 32bit version of Win10 and that was more than a year before
Win 11 came along. End of an era though and I can see why some people
would be anti.
Can't say as it worries me all that much though.

Still running XP on one Sony VAIO box (no internet access) because the
hardware is 'special' as well as the software. Firewire and DVgate make
capturing video from a SO 8mm camcorder so easy.

Apropos of that sort of thing I just discovered a ten quid HDMI capture
dongle that actually seems to work after a fashion.

16 bit programs can run on 32 bit editions of windows, win11 only has 64
bit edition (but will run 32 bit programs).

My Canon DSLR generates (I presume) 32-bit Jpegs and it won't talk to my
laptop which is running a 64-bit OS. I usethe SLR so seldo now that ICBA
to figure-out why, or which pogrom to replace. I suppose I should, I
can't remember why I didn't downloadsoething last time I looked there.

Yep, this here laptop, bought in 2017 with i7-7700HQ 2.80GHz CPU can't
run Win11.

Well, deftly changing into full pedant mode, strictly speaking, Win11
doesn't really need it but MS tries to make it a prerequisite for
installation. I assume they think it would make their job a lot easier
if a lot of older less secure PCs were removed from the internet. I
suppose they may be right but whether you choose to keep Win 10 running
on a non-compliant PC or use Rufus to install Win 11 on it isn't going
to make a huge difference to general internet security for the rest of
us.

I've always found it weird that people connect a camera to a PC via a
cable to copy files over using a dedicated piece of software.

Take SD card out of camera, insert into card reader, copy files.

In my case, remove card from camera, place in SD slot and - zilch -
doesn't even show on 'desktop'.

I think I ust havebto enable FO big SD cards... (?)
