That's because the Linux OSes in question don't have, or require, some of the security features that modern versions of Windows do.

I'll leave it to you to decide whether you think lack of a security feature makes the Linux OS "better".

Open up a File Explorer and it should show up as a drive, even if
Explorer doesn't automatically open.

That's M$? Opened System Manager (in Mint) and it doesn't even show as a
drive.

Getting old and forgetful - a few earsago I would have had it sorted at
the double, in a trice, fortissimo.

Seems the answer is camera lacks SDXC culpability. So, find-up some SDHC
crads - 'somewhere'.

I've not had cause to run Win 11 yet, I have a few VMs of Win10 for some
stuff I need for client access, but that is it.
I'm sure I will play at some point.

I have 16-bit software running fine on 64-bit Win 10, it refuses to run on
Win 11 though. Annoying, as it's hardware related (PAT tester). I keep a
Win 10 box going just for that.

Mint certainly works fine to open several of my different camera SD cards, it's
sometimes a bit iffy connecting direct to the camera but I suspect that's
Nikon's USB rather than the OS.

Yes, I know, but someone's tidied away all my SD cards and I can't get
upstairs in the wheelchair...

I'll just have to wait till next Tuesday and hope my shopping carer can
find one, or unforget the password &c for my newer box.

Me too. My laptop does apparently fulfil the W11 criteria, but AFAICT
there's absolutely nothing there that I would want, quite a lot that I
certainly don't need, and a fair amount that I'd probably find a PITA
to get used to or work out how to bypass.

Has anyone on W11 found anything that they actually would recommend it
for?
