I'm guessing that when a loved one dies, informing umra isn't a
priority. We knew Linda and Sid were on the way out because they told
us. There may be others, given our age range who are up there with the
Choir Invisible.

I think that's true, especially for those people who may have stopped
posting on umra regularly, some time before they were given their
marching orders. Both Linda and Sid were central characters on umra
when (and for some time after) they became ill, and I think umra had a
pretty central place in their lives.

I think I’ve missed something by way of a thread but certainly I do have a
few on my calendar that have passed away over the years.

Going way back Charles Hankel, Glynn Greenwood,Peter Hesketh, Liz Blades (I
can’t remember how we found out about Lizbuff). Lizbuff was a close friend
of Chankle’s, without her, no, we wouldn’t have known. Hesky, don’t
remember but Michelle Holcroft took me in her car. Probably his family.

Robin Somes, can’t remember.

There are one or two others I think filtered through via other no longer
umrats. Jeremy someone who used to come to the BBQs. A chap from the Isle
of Skye.

Because I set my filter to remove when read, if a thread fails to arrive
I’m stuffed.

Robin Somes is certainly still around. He posted only today about
medlars and recognised my aposite quote from DH Lawrence.

Mary Gentle hangs out on Quora, terrorising God-botherers. I finally got
round to reading Ash quite recently, it gave me many fits of the vapours
and Mary herself told me that when she was writing it she had her hands
over her ears and her eyes screwed shut.

Having had 2 distantly-resident friends go silent on me, one of whom I
am sure will have died and the other I don't know why but suspect, I
have made a list (1) of people who are to be notified of my demise when
the time comes and informed my n-o-k of its existence.

(1) With contact details and descriptors such as Umrat, relation, close
friend, etc.

addresses without telling me before I pop my clogs, you will be
informed. If my executors do what I ask of them, of course.

That's a good idea. I really should do something similar. I always
make sure I put my name and address on the back of all the Christmas
cards I send, as a number of them go to, sometimes elderly, people I
rarely hear from/of at other times of the year. It means that, if
they've popped their clogs since I last heard from them, there's a good
chance someone will now tell me.

When my mother died, it was in November and the thought of piles of
Christmas cards arriving for her was a huge incentive, for my brothers
and I, to make sure we let all her friends know. We did pretty well,
but three cards did get through the net. Two were from near-neighbours
who had, somehow, managed not to hear about it and I was very grateful
for the return address details on the third which allowed me to write to
them letting them know that Mum had died.

Very good idea. I have been working on a document called "if I die.doc" to give to my wife, which would have all the details of the bank accounts and all that stuff. Might add that.

My great-uncle died between my great-aunt writing and posting the christmas cards for that year. so she struck through his name on each one, which I thought was the saddest thing. That was nearly 30 years ago, and I think of her every Christmas, amending the already-written cards, accounting for the loss of her husband of 55 years.

When my mother died on 8th December, my father found a pile of Christmas
cards all ready to be posted. He couldn't face dealing with them and adding
the sad news, so they were not sent at all. I guess this was a clue for a
few people who didn't know, so they phoned at some point in the new year.
Others sent cards to them both the following year.

I bumped into some print clients a year or so after the Husgod died and
when they asked after him I had a brief conversation in my head about what
to say, before giving them the news. Awkward moments...
