My Galaxy s10e has started eating battery and a factory reset hasn't
helped.

Would this be a good budget replacement?

well, it's budget price compared to an S23 but not what I would call a
budget phone like a Moto G series.

Thing is, I've been well happy with the s10e for a few years now. I look
at newer stuff and see prices in excess of 1000 and that's more than I
want to pay. The most important thing these days seems to be the camera.
Well, I don't really give a stuff about the camera, so long as it works
for snapshots.

So I just want a modern version of what I already have. Does that make
sense?

Pass. If it were me I'd try for a Pixel 6a (if you can find one) or 7a.

Moto G versions seem 'variable', My G10 does all that I want and gets a
good signal. SWMBO's G31 occasionally does weird shit and she can't get
a good Vodafone signal or WiFi in the same place I can. Aerial presumably.

yes, my G10 was better than the G31 I bought after I left the G10 on the
topbox lid in the Picos. I recovered the G10 but it did not survice the
first left hand bend where it was launched into the scenery

the G31 lost NTFS for a while until a recent software update. I think this
is the big difference in Moto & Samsung. Updates for Samsung are more
frequent and are supported for longer. I assume that Samsung is 5G and you
have to spend 100% more than the current G32 costing 100 to get a Moto
phone with 5G. Moot here in the wilds of Mid Wales where 5G is aspirational
on Lebara/Vodafone. I'd still rather pay 99 for a phone that does the job,
than 350 for a S23 lookalike.

FWIW I got the somewhat cheaper S32 5G a year ago and am quite happy

The owner reviews on this Samsung page aren't great re battery life.

<https://www.samsung.com/uk/smartphones/galaxy-a/galaxy-a34-5g-lime-256gb-sm-a346blgeeub/>

On the plus side it looks like you can blow-dry your hair using it.
That's probably why the battery life isn't so great. ;-)

I've had an A32 5G for about 2 years now. Quite happy with it, only
complaint is it's a bit bulky, phones seem to be getting bigger.
Could be that I don't know better

It's all spanish for me, too, but I had to get a new Galaxy A54 a month
or so ago. It's a replacement for my A42. I'm not totally pleased. Some
old apps aren't available, and it's not as friendly, (ie, I have to take
more steps to do anything.) Samsung models are abundant and it's real
difficult finding what's what. Euro models are different from US models,
etc.

Good luck finding something to suit you.

I'd put my vote behind the Pixel range as well. Only thing I don't like about them is
sometimes the maintenance lifetime seems to be a little short; especially if compared
to Apple. This is really something Apple get right, they're still providing patches for
the iPhone 6S launched in 2015!

Pixels, on the other hand, were launched with three years of security updates, moving
to five to eight for more recent models. Of course, how many phones last for three
years without getting lost/broken?

One other comment, if you're used to Samsung's 'skin' on top of Android it might take a little
getting used to the Pixel interface. Having said all that, once my Pixel 6 dies I'll doubtless
replace it with a 9/10/whatever if still available. Just whiling away the days until I can get the
cortex/retinal implants to replace the phone.

Well, all mine actually - going right back to my trusty Nokia 7110 from
1998! (?) - which I still have boxed up under my desk along with most of
the ones I've had since.*

I've never had an A Series Samdung, but always thought of them as a
little down market.

Others have mentioned Moto G, of which I've had a couple, and been
fairly pleased

Got a brace of Pixel 6as recently, for me and the missus, and for the
cost (300 quid in the UK), I think it's a struggle to match that
perfomance/price combination

Since the factory reset (which caused me a ton of grief - email accounts
lost etc), since 8am the battery has gone down to 64% at 15:40.

Maybe I can delay a tad longer...

I've been happy with my A72 for a couple of years now which replaced an
S7. My folks have got an A14 & and A52 (I think) and they're fine.

The thing with Samsung is that they do keep security updates going
longer than some other manufacturers - the A34 will get updates until
July 2028[1].

Samsung's customer support is shite, mind, so just hope that nothing
goes wrong!
