Since a recent update, my Samsung battery has been plummeting suspiciously
fast. Seems to be quite common?

Never had a Pixel, they cost roughly 2x what an equivalent Samsung
costs. They are obviously better but do you think 2x better?

And mine has a relatively new battery. The original one got fat.

They really don't, especially the Pixel 'A' series which probably sits alongside the Samsung A series.

Pixel 7A is £449
Samsung A54 also £449.

Pixel 8 Pro is £999
Samsung S23+ is >£1k

Thank you, saved me looking :-)

Anyone that knows me, knows what a cheapskate bargain hunter I am :-)
Also how I like my Android as pure as possible (no extra shite apps like
FB etc installed), hence why I stuck with Motorola so long. But they
went down the pan IMO.

It was a reluctant switch to Pixel, but actually happy with them (just
don't drop a 4a without any protection).

Really? As posted elsewhere, my Pixel 6a cost me 300 quid. What sort
of Samsung can you get for 150?

Well yes, my assertion of 2x may have been slightly excessive but you
can get a Samsung A14 128GB here for 205euros, so I hereby revise my
ratio to 1,71x.
So my question becomes 'Is the Pixel 1,71 better'?

Those look like the rrp. Samsungs here seem to be often discounted
where as the Pixel isn't.

Samsung A14 €205
Samsung A34 €295
Samsung A54 €399

Pixel 7A €439

I've had an A32 for about 2 years now so it'll probably soldier on for
a while. I like other Google stuff I've used eg. Chromecast and like
Bruce I don't like the mandatory extras Samsung put on their phones.
That and the enthousiasm on here for Pixel will probably push me over
the edge to go for a Pixel next time. I just have to get past my inner
cheapskate which baulks at the price.

IMO, yes :-)
When you take size and weight into account, and cores.
How frigging big a screen!

If I had my way, 6" screen would be absolute max

My Pixel 2 is still my favorite "around the house" phone AKA
mini tablet. The power button long press bringing up the Google
Home lighting controls is a feature they never should have changed.
And I love the feel of the fabric covered case. I even looked into
having a new battery put in, and flashing Lineage OS on it.

Pixel 4a ... OK. Still have this as my 2nd "house phone".

Pixel 5a ... current phone. Great camera. Has a 2nd (wide angle) lens.

There is really no excuse for not keeping up with security updates
for phones that are still perfectly functional. I get the fact that
the situation with Apple is qualitatively different, but for Google
to stop updating their flagship phones after 3 years never seemed
like much of a selling point to me.

I couldn't face the hassle of the nuclear option, (factory reset). So I
went for an App Reset (Settings -> Apps -> 3 dots -> Reset app
preferences) and it seems to have worked, battery life is back to
normal now. I wonder, if you do a factory reset, does it then download
and re-install all your apps with the same preferences? If so, then an
app reset is the better option I think.
