More seriously, I saw his posts and once the Aprilias were mentioned, I
sort of remembered his fetish but never seriously conversed with him, I
think. For all that, gutting that he felt it was the only way, so young.

I have felt that way sometimes, but I'm pretty sure it was cushioned
against the hind-mind knowledge that I would not follow through in reality.

Oddly liberating feeling, though.

I was chatting to Ben on this very subject.

I've never being genuinely suicidal, I've been in a very dark place a
couple of times, where you start to think such thoughts. I can see
how it can happen.

And I take your point about "liberating", too. For me, for some
(relatively) short periods, it seemed like the only way to stop the
pain.

wake the ferry made in the Bay of Biscay on the way home[1]

It was contemplation of that moment over the next 3 months that led to
the conclusion that stepping out of the rat race was the solution to the
malaise, rather than shuffling of this mortal coil.

[1] I made a similar trip this autumn on the same ferry without any such
tribulations

I've never got to that stage but leaving a job I hated helped my mental
health immensely.

Very sad, I can't begin to imagine what goes through a person's mind
which leads them to the conclusion that this is the best/only solution.
Then again, having been in a dark place a few times myself, it is very
hard at that moment to imagine being in a happy place and vice versa.

It is also a curiosity that many people with terminal illnesses seem to
'rally round' in some way a day or two before they die.

On a more practical subject, emergency services have noted that many
people die if they are told (prematurely?) that "Help has arrived!".
This is something to do with those words reducing the adrenalin spike
that those in dire need/seriously injured are experiencing. This is
believed to then reduce the adrenalin push that those people need to
survive right up to the point that they do actually receive treatment.

So, by almeans say "Help is on its way" - but leave it at that. The
injured/ill need to keep their adrenalin going as long as they can...

Similarly, those with dementia often have a period of clarity near the end. My beloved Grandmother did, which nicely coincided with West Ham beating Manchester United in the FA Cup, so I'm forever glad she was able to enjoy that result. She was gone a few days later.
