I like the CH+NS ones but I must say I prefer Bert Coules' more freely
adapted dramatisations. I'm a big admirer of Bert Coules' work and
enjoy the way he sometimes plays with and teases the audience.

Mind you, my absolutely favourite Bert Coules dramatisation does none
of those things. It's An English Tragedy, adapted from Ronald
Harwood's stage play. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01fny86

I think it is up there amongst the finest of radio drama.

That's not really my style. I was thinking more of a Chandleresque
portrait of the seedy side of Toytown, with Tessie Bear as the femme
fatale and PC Plod roughing up the golliwogs while taking bungs from
Mr Big Ears to turn a blind eye to his racketeering.

Have you read Jasper Fforde's Nursery Crime Series? That goes into
similar territory; it's a while since I've read them though[1], so I
can't remember how Chandleresque they may, or may not, have been.

[1] I think these were my least favourite of his assorted series and
stand alone books.

I very much enjoyed it and have got Red Side Story on order for when it
comes out, in February. I must reread Shades of Grey, to remind my self
of the story so far.

Spelling has become very dumbed down since the Americans introduced the
'spelling bee'. I mean, 'bee'. That surely has to be one of the
easiest words to spell, yet they somehow make it into a competition.

It does create a dilemma for parents who are concerned about their
children's ability to spell.

Sez who? :) https://www.oed.com/dictionary/benignant_adj

Perhaps more to the point, "malign" can also exist quite healthily as a
verb, which might be the primary source of "malignant", which looks like
a present participle.

I gather that the sequel had been planned for 2021, so it sounds as if
it's been delayed by a couple of years. I don't know why he hadn't
