Happy Hogmanay, MOPMOBs. Try not to overdoe the whisky and especially
not the clootie dumpling. I got into a mess with that on my first
Scottish Hogmanay, in 1988/89. Gosh, that was half my lifetime ago, near
as dammit!

As I approach my 70th turnover of the year, I find it that little bit
more mundane every time. Pah! Another one!

And no falling off any roofs (interpret that how you wish). I'm advised
that the modish expression for the moment any serial in any medium
turned silly is "jumping the shark". I suggest the umratic equivalent
should be "falling off the roof". Just don't. ok!

May the year of 2024 bring you what you wish for.

Rosie

I've lost capacity. I poured what I thought was a reasonable glass of
sherry to have with a few crisps and nuts before supper and part way
through just didn't want more and got a funnel and poured the rest
back into the bottle. B doesn't drink at all. For 26 years now, so is
ok to pour back.

I've got one of those mini bottles to have with supper. Which is
Sainsburys slow-cooked lamb legs, dauphinoise potaoes, red cabbage.
Their special ready meals are very good.previous years they did 3 or 4
lamb leg meals, this year just 1, but a whole aisle slow cooked
meals, various meats. I suppose that can be cheaper cuts if cooked
longer.

Keep the noise down will you please; we are off to bed at 22:00 as usual
and would like to get to sleep - next year will still come into being

I confess to thinking "New Year? Do we have to?" - but being
curmudgeonly is what I do best.

The only reason I ever stay up until midnight at Hogmanay these days is
because I know I'll get woken by fireworks, so I may as well do
something useful.

This year and previous years I've seen and heard people talk of the
Spanish custom of 12 grapes to eat as NY chimes 12. I also saw a
custom of putting a gold coin in your champagne glass to bring luck. I
do have a very small, thin, gold coin and got it out, but realised I
would go to sleep before 12 so put it back in my jewel box.

I do seem to wake daily now around 0030-1.30, can't sleep and come
down to do the puzzles on my PC that click over to new at midnight.

Wishing you all a peaceful, healthy 2024.

I went to bed around 11:30 and dozed off.
The first fireworks woke me so I went and watched them from the widow,
which has a good view of most of the valley. Very pretty when viewed
without specs. They lasted about 5 minutes, then back to bed and sleep...
until 00:20 when they started up again, louder and for longer than before.

Sleep had nuggered off so I Wordled and Connected around 1:00 before
dropping off again.

Humbug at may continue for a while

Yes, the late non netted umrat, Roger, and his Spanish wife did the grapes
thing with us one year. It was rather involved to our ears.

Yes. And they were big reasonably sized grapes too. Perhaps it works

Your pretty widow when viewed without specs reminds me of a line from
Trial by Jury:

"She may very well pass for forty three
in the dusk, with the light behind her."

(When that was written, 43 was presumably a lot older than it is now.)

And that in turn reminds me of a line from Raymond Chandler's The High

I got up in the night most nights in the last weeks, either broken arm
hurt or just not sleeping, but last night woke around 0030 and was too
tired to go down and wordle or connect. The fireworks were loud from
around 11-2 whenever I woke. I think 2 is too late.

Chandler also came up with this in The Little Sister:

The star was a bad-tempered brunette with contemptuous eyes and a couple of
bad close-ups that showed her pushing forty-five backwards almost hard
enough to break a wrist.

An example of the TbJ song is at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzFf1kpio_E - the relevant lines being
at 1:18:

"You'll soon get used to her looks," said he
"and a very nice girl you'll find her." (Then as above.)

[I know it well, as Dad practiced it about the house when he played the
Judge. (And a good "Judge" too, IMO.)]

Vicky, if this is a regular occurrence, what about investing in a tablet? I
do Wordle and similar on my iPad* in bed when I wake early. Wouldn't dream
of traipsing downstairs!

B gave me an ipad for my birthday in September. It lives downstairs
and I dutifully struggle to use it first thing, porridge time. He set
up fb, twitter, browser, mail etc and I mainly just look at a couple
of newspapers and then go gratefully to my PC. It's partly clumsy
fingers and partly fingerprints don't work well as I age. Can't use
them for stuff on mobile and Austrian Embassy has difficulty taking
