On the whole I am a big fan of Amazon and thing Mr Bezos has got so much
right which other sellers would do well to imitate. But lately I have
noticed quite an important flaw.

The last 2 packages I have had delivered by Amazon have been left
outside my front door when there has been NO attempt to deliver them to
me personally. On both occasions I have been at home and would have
heard either a knock or a doorbell ring. My front door is not in a
garden or behind a fence or hidden in anyway, opening onto a courtyard
which is frequented by numerous neighbours, tradespeople, etc. I have
had 2 parcels stolen from my front door in the past.

In the e-mail sent to say packages have been delivered there are links
to click if the delivery was "great" or "not so great." They both lead
to the same webpage where there is nowhere to make further comment,
elaborate on your compliment/complaint or send a message to Amazon.

Harrumph!

I have had similar problems with deliveries which declare on the tracking
they were 'Handed to resident', when in fact they have been dumped on the
doorstep, or in the car port with no attempt to alert me to their presence.
This week, knowing I had meds to collect from the pharmacy. I asked for my
order to be left in a locker at Morrisons. A much better idea, as long as I
take a step with me, or can find a tall person to reach it down for me. Why
is my stuff always put in the top layer of lockers?

No good:-( Kept asking what item I needed help with, showing my most
recent purchases. When I avoided that and tried "Contact us" a ChatBot
asked me what I needed help with and present a list of my most recent
and not so recent purchases.

I gave up.

You are not alone Jenny! Just because we have an outer and inner door,
they can’t be arsed to knock. Presumably they simply don’t care now.
Fortunately we haven’t lost anything!

A friend further up on our side of the road has his own business selling to
Yurp still but is usually away at weekends and certainly wasn’t expecting
an Amazon delivery. Knowing his habit, I picked it up last Sunday and
brought it back, sending him an email. Just as well I did! Sunday night
was *wild*! He has no secure place for parcels either. He certainly
wasn’t expecting a return of something that had been ordered from someone
in Italy and was returned when the person saw how much the customs tax
was!!

Everything is above my head Penny. I’d have to take a 12 yr old with me.
Most are taller than I am (including Wunderkind’s older sprog. Or McT
would have to trail around town with me.

I think Amazon let you specify you want it at wheelchair height. It
might catch on.

I had a delivery comprising two parcels the other day using a courier I
had never heard of before. They sent me an email in the middle of the
night giving me a first thing delivery slot. When the bell rang I
crawled out of bed to a window and said I'd be down to somebody half way
back down the drive. When I got down he had gone but I found a parcel
hidden between the car and the garage. Note: A parcel. I started to
investigate whether I should really have received two parcels and where
the second one was, plus related questions. I then received an email
saying the driver had been unable to find my address followed by a
second email saying a parcel had been delivered. I rearranged delivery
for the missing parcel. Next day they sent me an email in the middle of
the night giving me a first thing delivery slot. When the bell rang I
crawled out of bed to a window and saw nobody. On getting downstairs I
found a parcel sitting in full view on the doorstep. Then I received an
email saying it had been handed to resident[1] by the very same driver
who had been the day before. One does tend to despair.

They do not have a feedback option.

[1] Just because I open the door and relieve them of a parcel what makes
them think I reside there?

That locker suggestion is a good idea. So far (touches wood, crosses
fingers) I have not had any deliveries go astray but it's often meant
getting up early [1] and waiting around home all day. Then there are
the deliveries which are promised for tomorrow. So I go out today to
find out when I get back that they tried to deliver them today. And so
on.

To be perfectly honest, following up on the OP, I'm becoming
increasingly frustrated by Amazon and have been trying very hard to
reduce my use of it where possible. Where it's not so possible,
unfortunately is in getting stuff delivered abroad at a reasonable
price. I sent some wooded French toys to Canada for Christmas and the
postage was over fifty quid. Based on what I've bought before from
Amazon.ca for delivery to BC, I'm sure I could have found something
just as good which had been made out there.

But I'm tired of having to navigate my way around what Amazon would
like to persuade me to buy in contrast with what I already know I want
to buy, avoid cr*p on Amazon Marketplace and most of all trying to
find and click the pale grey type on the pale grey background that
says "proceed to checkout without joining Amazon Prime."

At Sparrowfart[1] in the morning you'd either be the occupier or a
burglar and if the latter, all they would really have done is cut out
the middleman.

Nick
[1]I could have chosen a better description for early morning because
I'm a bit sensitive about birds right now. Yesterday we went for a
picnic near the lakes in Palermo (Not the one in Italy obvs.) It was a
lovely, bright summer day and the birds were singing in the trees. I
don't know if it was my bright yellow shirt that did it but suddenly
the singing took on a very agitated tone and from the birds in the
tree above our heads descended a rain of guano. I mention my shirt
because although WE were seated under the tree, it was ME that
received the baptism of poo. Of course, when it started I looked up.
Bad move - there was a direct hit on my glasses. I really don't know
what started it but all my clothes had to go into the wash directly we
arrived back home

Exactly. It seems all search engines are tending to become "here's what
you aren't looking for but we'd like you to buy it" engines.

Did you (or anyrat) happen to hear the recent "Words for Sale" episode
of Word of Mouth? Definitely one of those "whatever is the world coming
to?" moments (which come round all the more frequently as one approaches
80!). I was horrified by what goes on. Should be compulsory listening
for *everyone* I think.

Couriers seem unable to ring our doorbell and if I am in the study
knocking on the door and running away is useless so there is no
knowledge a package has been dumped on the door.

Just listened to it now.

We all sort-of knew about this sort of thing going on but hearing it talked about so clearly and with actual examples was a real eye-opener. And those prices! I had naively thought that we were talking about tenths of a penny - the sort of royalty payments Spotify make whenever anybody streams a music track. Just think: when I'm buying a length of guttering, incorporated in the price is the several pounds search fee the company has paid to make me purchase it.

Maybe we are all expected to have one of those video doorbell things so
we can spot the delivery.
If I spotted a stealth delivery person, I would like to set off a loud
klaxon which (hopefully) would scare the pants off of them.

I suspect if we had such a thing, Himself would have produced said klaxon.
Being hard of hearing now as well, the day may come when klaxon would be
better than the bell.

Could be rather messy though.

Harrumph indeed. A couple of weeks ago I had an item I'd ordered
delivered to our front door. There was a photo of it to prove it had
been placed there. It wasn't there when I opened the door to have a
look. I was at home a few feet away from the front door. There was no
knock on the door, and no ring from the doorbell. I had an email telling
me that the courier had tried to deliver the item, but had no response.
I was able to get back to them within a few minutes of the failed
delivery, and had a chat with a human being. The item turned up a few
hours later, this time accompanied by a knock on the door. Why?

Given that we now know that Amazon have access to the video streams
produced by those doorbells[1] their so-called proof of delivery ought
to be trumped by their own video evidence in those circumstances. It
won't solve the laptop-substituted-for-a-housebrick problem,
unfortunately, but that's a different issue.
Nick
[1]That they have just been forced in the USA to stop automatically
providing footage to the police without a warrant ought to be proof
enough

Without wishing to get too boring about this it could be a guest, carer,
District Nurse, tradesman, butler or housemaid. Not my house, obviously,
but a house.

I'm still trying to fully understand the implications. (And resist the
