Crude oil carriers need refined oil for their engines.
The Ultra-Ultra girt big (250,000 to 500,000 tonnes) crude carriers that
anchored off the beaches of Falmouth would be visited by (comparatively)
tiny little tankers which topped them up.

Just after I posted, the image that came to mind was the vessel in
"Around the World in 80 Days" where they stripped out every scrap of
wood (doors, panelling etc.) to keep the engine running. A cargo vessel
that 'eats' its own cargo seemed similar in some way.

Unless it has xhanged since… A fuel lorry running out of fuel has to await
a transfusion from a tanker and cannot access the cargo.

I believe that did actually happen in the early days of steam-powered
transatlantic (how does one capitalise that word? Strictly it should be
camel case!) crossings, when records were being set: I think one of them
did have to burn some of itself to make the record.

Many years ago I was on a bus which came across a fellow member of the
same fleet in a village in the Hampshire countryside and there was a
transfer of diesel from one to the other. I cannot believe this was
ever planned or scheduled and wondered why and how it was even possible.

I sailed with Capt (2nd mate, mate) for 4 years and none of the ships
used their own cargo for fuel. We aere on lightening ships round the
UK for some trips. They met bigger ships im Lime Bay and transferred
some of the cargo so that the bigger ship rode high enough to get into
posts it wanted to deliver at.
