That Amazon.co.uk now quotes prices in USD? (Spit) What the hell is going
on? Are we such a piddling little nuisance, our currency isn’t worth using

Quids for me too. I suspect Mike has accidentally switched Amazon over to
dollars, perhaps by clicking on one of their hidden links. Converting back
may be a challenge.

And if this is the case (as it definitely shows Amazon.co.uk) I would be
bitternly grateful if anyRat knows where and what the hidden button / link
/ option might be please.

Okey Dokey. This may depend on your environment, not a loving home in
Reading but app/webste, iOs/Android/Windows/'Nix, etc.

On the website, just to the right of the search bar I have a Union flag
icon (other national flags may be available). Clicking thereupon gives
rise to a dropdown with an option to change currency. This is not
available in the app, but currency settings may be picked up from your
user profile.

If that doesn't work for you: Does it think that you, or your delivery
address are in Transpondia or some other dollar using land?

Agreed. And I do like the word "thereupon". I must make a note to use it
more often.

I also discovered, on the LHS of the Amazon home page, under the Amazon
name and logo, that there are three horizontal bars next to the word
"All". Click on this, and scroll down to "Help & Settings", under which
you will find "Currency Settings".

Yes - there are a range of such useful words! (You could also use
"thereon" in this example, I think.) Such as therefor (not the same as
therefore), whither, whence, hither, hence, thither, thence, thereunder,

Those three horizontal bars - which I've seen people refer to as a
hamburger, presumably meaning between the two halves of a bun - have
become the international symbol for a menu (in the software sense). I
don't like that fact, but of course there's nothing I can do about it.

Somewhat (he said in understatement) surprisingly it was the only word I
could think of to fit the purpose. "On it" and all similar words or
phrases had completely departed my brain.

This might be an appropriate place to enquire about "toward(s)".

Miss Beddoes, my sister's satnav lady, told us the other day to "take
the right turn toward the ..." My sister queried whether it should be
"... towards the ...". I wasn't sure but did think that "untoward" was
not the opposite of what Miss Beddoes was saying, so perhaps "towards"
was indeed right.

When I said "in the app" above I actually meant "on android" as opposed

There appears to be a large number of YouTube videos on how to change
this. Have you tried Google? Can you try on other than an iPad?

If all fails you'll have to move.

Good point to ponder!

Thinking about it, I think I'd say towards in some circumstances -
"towards town" for example; "toward town" would feel odd. But now,
saying them in my head a few times, both now seem acceptable!

At first on reading your query, I wondered if the more metaphorical use
might use the other one (though I'm not sure which way round now!):
"raise some funds toward[s] getting the clubhouse a new ..." - i. e.
"with the aim of" rather than "in the direction of".

I suspect, at least nowadays, both are in general use for both uses.
(And if one was ever incorrect, I can't think which!)

I think I prefer towards for directions.

[When I hit Post, my spellchecker didn't object to either version.]

What _do_ you see?

When I (laptop running Windows 7, Chrome browser) go to amazon.co.uk, I
get a black stripe across the top of the screen, with below that a dark
blue-grey stripe, then the meat of the page.

The black stripe shows: amazon.co.uk with the smile arrow; Deliver to J.
and Charing and part of my postcode; a search box; a flag; Hello;
Returns; and a basket (trolley) symbol.

The dark blue/grey box has: the "hamburger" three lines and the word
All; then menu items - Music, Prime, CustServ, Buy Again, Today's,
Prime, BestSellers; then something from HelloFresh.

The flag in the black stripe is the Union flag/jack, and if hovered over
- I don't even need to click it - generates a popup square, the first
item in which is change currency.

The hamburger/"All" in the blue/grey stripe generates - I _do_ have to
click - a long dropdown; if I scroll down that, Currency Settings is
third from bottom. Clicking that lets me change my preferred.

While untoward sounds fine toward just doesn't. I feel it always needs

Ah, that takes me back to my days of computerising forex trades! Some
changes since then – there were no AZNs, KZTs or even EURs then but we
did have to work with the nice distinction between BECs, BELs and BEFs.

I see there's no option for BTN (Bhutan Ngultrum) which used to be my
favourite. I feel cheated.

I regret that a vaguely bat-shaped thing, presumably some sort of
electronic console, seems to be replacing a playing card of the
traditional French design as the symbol for games. It's as if anything
you can't plug in doesn't count.

To my ear, "heading towards town" has more than a hint of the present
tense about it, whilst "heading toward town" seems less fixed in time.

T'other day, Wofe was trying to purchase sundries[1] from Amazon.

She was doing that complicated juggling act, where you try to avoid the
"We're giving you 30 days free Prime..." mantrap - and attempting to pay
either nothing or the minimum possible for delivery, when she found that
they were about to charge her (roughly) £99 delivery on (also roughly)
£24's worth of goods.
She backed out of the transaction.

[1] Do sun dried tomatoes count as sundries?

I thought she must have been using some very decorative font.

P.S. What is the purpose of fonts which seem to go to great lengths to
make text unreadable?

Publishing government consultation documents. Or party manifestos. Or etc.

I saw something today claiming that "respectable" scientific journals are
using AI to peer review papers (or maybe the paid reviewers are
outsourcing to AI). One counter measure I thought of would be sending the
papers for review as hard copy, in a difficult to scan font or binding.
