A rally driver and his navigator died when their car hit a tree at about 75mph (120kmh), an inquest has heard.

Driver Shawn Rayner, 52, from Windsor, and 64-year-old navigator Steve Dear were killed in a race at Bramley Camp, Hampshire, on 29 December 2017.

Mr Rayner and Mr Dear, who was a "one-off" substitution, suffered chest and head injuries and died instantly.

Senior coroner Andrew Bradley recorded a verdict of accidental death at a hearing in Basingstoke earlier.

Mr Dear, from Wokingham, had replaced his son Declan who had been unable to take part in the race.

Mr Rayner's MK 2 Ford Escort became airborne after exiting a "big dip" on a straight unmaintained road, witnesses told the hearing.

Race official Roger Marchant said the car was about 3ft (90cm) off the ground before it hit the oak side-on with a "loud bang".

Tony Johnson, from Hampshire police, said the "colossal impact" wrapped the car around the tree "banana shaped".

The car's steering arm had probably been damaged on landing after the dip, making it "almost impossible" to control, Mr Johnson said. Barry Guess, from Sutton and Cheam Motor Club, which organised the event, said he had warned drivers about the dip.

"I made a comment that even if they were driving a forklift they would go up in the air if they were not careful," he said.

Mr Bradley said he had heard evidence that the event was well organised.

He said the pair "died doing what they wanted to do, something that gave them pleasure and excitement".

After the hearing Mr Dear's son Declan, Mr Rayner's usual navigator, said he was "heartbroken" by his father's death

A motorsports enthusiast from Wolverhampton died accidentally after the rally car he was competing in as a co-driver with a friend smashed into a tree in a competition in Holland - an inquest has heard.

Ray Lloyd, who was aged 56, died in the Conrad Euregio Rally in Hengelo, Holland, in November 2007.

Popular Mr Lloyd lived in Fairview Road, Penn, and was vice-president of Wolverhampton & South Staffs Car Club. He was killed travelling in a BMW 325i driven by his friend of more than 20 years, Richard Felgate.

At an inquest, Wolverhampton Coroners Court heard yesterday that a physician's report found the cause of death to be cerebral trauma following Mr Lloyd's severe head injuries.

Mr Felgate, of Bridgnorth, told the court he and Mr Lloyd were familiar with the roads and conditions after taking a reconnaissance.

"'It was a situation we had certainly been in before. The car went onto the grass and continued to spin. There were trees on the outside and it made contact with one, which hit the passenger side. The car went onto its side and then landed on its roof."

Mr Felgate later found out that the stump of the tree had come through the passenger window, striking Mr Lloyd on the head and piercing the skin of the car roof at the same time.

Coroner Richard Allen recorded a verdict of accidental death.

A 32-year-old rally driver from Mid Wales has died after his car smashed into a tree during a race. Father-of-one Martyn Lewis, from Kerry, Newtown, died after his Vauxhall Nova rolled and hit a tree during the annual Dukeries Rally in Nottingham at 2.40pm on Saturday, at Harlow Wood, just off the A60, near Mansfield. Tributes were today paid to Mr Lewis, who was married to Catherine and had a son, Charlie and managed the Severn Fast Fit tyre business on the Dyffryn Industrial Estate in Newtown.

More than 1,400 people have already signed up to a Facebook group set up in memory of Mr Lewis, including his mother-in-law Maureen Evans.

She said today: "Words cannot express how we are feeling at the moment, not only have we lost the best son-in-law anyone could wish for but also a best friend.

"He died doing what he loved, a passionate and talented driver and we hope that Catherine and Charlie can draw some comfort from this.

"Mart was a devoted husband and a fantastic father. Many people have commented on this site about Martyn's infectious smile, this smile still lives on every time Charlie smiles.

"God bless and rest in peace."

Callum Black, who created the group and was a friend of Mr Lewis, said he was a "truly inspirational" driver who raced with passion and commitment.

"Martyn was never without his beaming smile, in whatever situation, winning or losing," he added.

"I loved his company, always laughing and joking. He will be missed by so many, but never forgotten."

Mr Lewis had been competing with his brother, Richard, who was also in the car and taken to hospital for a check up.

Top Ugandan rally driver Riyaz Kurji is killed instantly when his car veers off the road and hits a tree.

East African rally driver Riyaz Kurji died during the Pearl of Africa Rally on Saturday (May 2) when his car veered off the road and hit a tree.

The two-time winner was leading the race in his Subaru Impreza when the accident occurred, according to organisers his car rolled several times before crashing into a tree, killing Kurji while co-driver Sayed Kadri survived and was able to call for help.

"Riyaz Kurji who is a renowned driver was flagged as of yesterday as car number one out of a total of 27 cars, by the time of the accident he was running as number one on the road and also in points. Riyaz was killed instantly when the car veered off the road, crashed into an anthill and then a tree," said the chairman of the Uganda Motor Club David Bitalo, who went on to confirm that the rest of the rally has been abandoned as a mark of respect for Kurji.

"It has been decided by the organising committee with the agreement of stewards, the competitors, as well as the blessing of our sponsors and co-sponsors, that the event be brought to an end."

A driver and co-driver were killed when their car hit a tree during the 42nd Rally Villa de Tineo 2023 in Asturias.

Tragedy struck the Rally Villa de Tineo 2023 in Asturias this afternoon, Saturday, April 15, when a car left the road and crashed into a tree. Julio César Castrillo and his co-driver, Francisco Javier Álvarez were killed in the accident.

The organisers of the 42nd edition of this competition immediately took the decision to suspend the race and called for a minute’s silence in the Town Hall Square at 18:45pm in honour of the two deceased racers. Today saw the drivers competing on the second and final day of this year’s rally.

A driver was arrested early Friday morning following a crash caused by racing near the State Farmers Market.

The crash occurred before 2:30 a.m. on Lake Wheeler Road close to Centennial Parkway.

According to Raleigh police, Jocelynn Morrison, 24, and Jada Ballen, 25, were racing on Centennial Parkway right before the crash.

Police said Morrison lost control of her car and sideswiped Ballen. Both cars went through a grass median.

Ballen regained control and stopped her car on Lake Wheeler Road, but Morrison crossed the intersection with Lake Wheeler Road and struck a tree. Her car spun and struck a second tree before coming to a stop, police said.

Morrison was transported to a hospital with serious injuries, where she later died..

Ballen was arrested and charged with felony serious injury by vehicle. Ballen's charges were upgraded to felony death by vehicle Tuesday.

A black car with a shattered windshield, believed to be Ballen's Chevy Malibu, was visible at the scene.

The road reopened by 11 a.m.

The crash remains under investigation.
