Some years ago, electric shavers all were both mains and battery, ok that
meant a slightly heavier mains unit, but little else. These days it seems if
your battery is discharged it just stops and you plug it in, but it will
not drive the shaver while its charging. This does not seem like progress to
me, it looks like cost cutting. Brian

You are absolutely right, shavers that work while charging are available
but more expensive.

Costs of shavers are a bit over the top though. In real terms they have
doubled in price in the last 15 years. I reckon it has all to do with when
Curries decided that shavers should be in fact be part of male personal
grooming products. Its a bit like job titles. Recycling specialist used to
be bin men.

Could never see the point of elecrtic razors.
I've tried them over the years, but always return to the wet shave.
Not only is it quicker and closer, but no charging and minimum cleaning.

My first GSM phone (a Siemens S3 ca 1993) was supplied with a battery
charger which had a receptacle / nest thingy just large enough for the
battery - as long as you removed the phone from it :-\

I doubt they reuse their razors. I’ve only seen disposable ones used once
and then discarded.

I change mine every six to twelve months depending on how flush I’m
feeling. Wet shave every day. Showering first to soften the bristles makes
a huge difference.

Well, Its hard for me with a wet shaver, always cutting myself. I'm sure you
are right about the closeness, but one has to make a decision which is best
for yourself.

I have to say that Philips have always been better than most of the rest,
both for life and shaving and fore dismantling and cleaning, Remmington next
and then everyone else.

One thing I do notice though is that all hair in unwanted places grows more
as you get older, to the detriment of the front hair line and the crown. Its
as if somebody have moved the follicles while you slept and shoved them in
elsewhere.

Could you wet shave if blindfolded though, that is the question. However
even when I had some sight, I found it tiresome and messy compared with just
wandering around the house shaving with electric. Brian

Yes well, there are always some of us who simply do not grow a beard. It
grows long enough to look like a castaway, but not long enough to trim. I'm
guessing that evolution had a hand in growing hair on the face, and on the
skin generally.
I also cut my own hair, and have done so for many years, all by feel, but
the face is a much morecomplex shape and therefore, for me the floating
rotary cutters work well without damaging it. Admittedly you may need to
shave a couple of times in a day, but that is not an issue.

Gravity, innit? The follicles migrate downhill, just like everything else.

Yes, I do sometimes wonder why shavers do not have removable batteries a bit
like power tools do. After all the battery is the only item that loses
efficiency due to its charging cycles. The cutters if they are of the rotary
type seem much better are only going to nee replacing if they get damaged by
dropping the device.

I have one which uses a pair of AA cells, the throwaway types last a
month or so, the rechargeables last a couple of weeks between charges.

I've not managed to kill the lithium battery in one yet, but the foils
on the Braun type tend to develop holes, and they seem to have stopped
selling them as spares, nor can I find the circular type anywhere, and I
have worn out a few over the years. They last about as long as the motors.

That sounds like a good theory - but why did the follicles on my
legs give up ? Why did the follicles on my chin and chest stop colouring the
hairs in but not the ones on top of my head in my armpits and down below.

I started out with an AA flattery type shaver, but found it got quite
"pinchy" so upgraded to a mains one for a few years, then eventually
went to wet shaving ...

Like wet blades, the heads and foils have a limited life. You used to be
able to buy the heads and foils as spare parts, but the throwaway
society says we now have to throw the rest of the shaver away as well.

I stopped in lockdown, when I didn't have to go into the orifice and we
were doing sound-only online meetings. It rather surprised them when we
went to doing picture and sound in November or so and I had a large
expanse of beard. I subsequently got an eclectic beard trimmer and it's
kept in trimmer trim now - http://dirtyroses.co.uk/images/mike2p.jpg

I almost always use an eclectic shaver, but when I do wet shave, I never
seem to use a mirror - even though there is a (fogged up) mirror over
the hand bison.
I think touch is much more use than sight, whichever method you're using.
