Thanks, David. I should have remembered Danny Morrison, but (discounting
Wayne Daniel) the others are fairly obscure. It's a little surprising
that Lawrence is the first for England, given it's a reasonably common
name.

impressive, wonder what they called bazball back then?

as to the kball xperiment, i think its 4 rounds but in 2 rounds each, with
the 2nd set at the end of august. I've read that key/ecb also ordered groundsmen
to cut more of the grass off this april, which may account for the very flat pitches
in some matches. howver with 8pts for a draw now, its left both divs very even: did
essex get fined/docked for kushys big bat?

more on the kball; Broad said that in UK due to the "very different weather conditions, ground conditions
and moisture levels, the Kookaburra ball swells and goes soft very quickly with any moisture".

given how damp april usually is, it would be wiser to use it during say june july or august.
But Key thinks its been a success and wants to use it all season!

I've read that mahmood is finally fit and may play for lancs, hopefully hes still
the bowler he looked like in the windies so long ago. and apparently Vaughan jnr
is playing for the yorks 2nds. How quickly time goes by!

Michael Vaughan is also in favour, pointing out that 43% (I think it
was) of overs have been bowled by spinners in the two rounds of the
Championship so far, compared to a far smaller percentage for the same
period last year.

Back to the Dukes ball today, and back to "normal" as far as the scores
are concerned it would seem.

Lancashire didn't play Hartley in their second match and he's not
playing again today, Lyon being the only spinner. I think Bashir has
played in all three of Somerset's matches.

yes the usual order has been restored. but i dont think more 550-3 or 600
innings is going to make better england bowlers. i think tremain didnt
get many wkts in the 2 kball matches, whereas in the oz season just ended
i think he took 50 at 15 with them. if he cant master it in england, then
it might be the wrong ball for the english season.

clearly they want gus to be fit for the T20 but he hasnt played many
cricket matches since the WC [did he play once?], and i would think
pope needs as many innings as poss. Duckett rested too it seems, at least
hes not playing, but robbo back for sussex and crawley for kent although
worral got him early. Does worrall play in oz anymore?

i read that CA only let Lancs have Lyon for 7 games, so i expect he'll
play in all the early matches. rather ironic that england spinner is kept
out by an oz. perhaps lancs could loan out hartley!

meanwhile rocky flintoff excites the media with 50 on debut in the lancs 2nds
including 3 legside 6s.

I confess Tremain has slipped under my radar, and I know nothing about
him. Who is he playing for and what does he bowl?

I'd have thought that playing too little would be just as much of a risk
to a player's fitness when he does finally play as playing too much
would be.

Me too.

Looking on Cricinfo, he doesn't seem to have played in Australia in
2023-4, but played T20 in South Africa and then in the UAE.

Apparently CA have told Lancashire that, as there was so little play in
their first match, they can have Lyon for one extra game.

hes opening the bowling for northants, has done for NSW and Victoria in oz
and is medium/fast medium seamer. Most of the oz seamers in the the SS
arnt much faster than MF/FM. The really quick ones like Richardson and
Lance Morris are often injured like ours. I dont think hazel cummins and starc
played in the SS at all last season, so maybe the ECB are following
that plan.

I've now read somewhere online (so it might not be correct) that the
ECB asked counties to rest their England players from two out of the
first seven rounds of Championship matches, but the counties could
choose which two matches it was. I hope that only applies to batsmen,
quick bowlers and the keeper, as I'd have thought that England's young
spinners need as many matches as they can get to gain experience. At
least Bashir already has a lot of overs under his belt on what look like
good batting pitches.

seeing how many england players surrey have in all forms, its must be a
bit dissapointing that members etc arnt able to see them play the one
time when there arnt any england games til June/July. It didnt stop them
rolling kent over, but a full strength side would be a handful. Yorks
who lost rather tamely to midsex, have to do without root and brooke
i spose, although they might have bairstow back. 5 results in the last
round with the dukes despite the weather.

Bash not having much sucess though and Hartley hasnt played yet. I dunno
why it should apply to Foakes.
