A lot of people move from Sylpheed to Claws, including the author
of Claws - so that path is beaten smooth.

Any particular reason for this?
I'm using Betterbird at the mo' and it seems fine beyond being heavy on
memory. It allows multiple address books and syncs to Google Calendar
(both essential for me)

As said by Teaze'n'Seize, open and run the .exe file and things "just work".

If it is in a .zip file, you need to extract it first, as you would under
'Doze.

The original reason for Claws was that Paul wanted to add features
and Hiroyuki wanted to keep Sylpheed very light and kept rejecting Paul's
patches, eventually Paul split Claws off initially as sylpheed-claws
tracking changes in sylpheed but eventually as Claws-Mail independently
developed.

That difference remains to this day - Claws has plugins and lots of
features while Sylpheed is very light and only does email, no plugins.
Historically Claws was far more prone to problems, but it's had a long time
to mature since the split now.

Sylpheed development has pretty much ground to a halt though (the
Oauth2 support is in 3.8beta released Nov 2022 and there hasn't been a 3.8
yet. I hadn't noticed as I use my own IMAP server). If it ever breaks for
me I'll probably switch to Claws, meanwhile it works and doesn't annoy me so
it stays (it's been my mail/news client for 20 years now - I led the
stampede from XFMail to Sylpheed when that stopped being developed.

That would rule out Sylpheed for you, not sure about Claws.

Ok, I've tried a couple of exes and can't get either of them to work. I
saw that the option 'Open With..' had gained a 'Run with Wine..' and
tried that. A small box appeared briefly on screen indicating that Wine
needed something else to run properly* and there was an 'Install' button
- briefly! The whole box disappeared too quickly for me to click
anything and I haven't seen it since.

The Ubuntu page mentioned above appears to consist of what might as well
be lorum ipsum for all that it means to me.

Any ideas please?

"wine: could not load kernel32.dll, status c0000135"

Let's try a different prog...

Nope - same error - but at least I think we've gone a stage further...?
