I had a text from Vodafone today reminding that my 3G Vodafone branded
PAYG smart-phone will revert to 2G only soon thus losing the ability to
use t'internet.

As a sop Vodafone are offering a 10% discount on an upgraded phone and
kindly provided a link, however when I tried the link it directed me to
their page 404, doh. Anyone would think it was deliberate?

I think I'll try another network, any recommendations?

All the remaining networks claim they will turn off 3G in 2024.

it won't be pleasant, but doesn't it have 2.5G or 2.75G (gprs/edge)

Sometimes at my late parents house (so phoneline/broadband disconnected)
that's all I get, unless I plonk the phone in an upstairs window sill
and then tether to it from downstairs ...

My point was jumping networks is only going to give your phone another year
or so.

A nearby bunker had an antenna on the surface connected to a similar
antenna in a letter tray several levels below in the comms room.

People would leave their mobile phones in the letter tray and receive
text messages, they then go upstairs if they wished to make a voice call.

Later there was a repeater installed so mobile phones worked in the bunker.

I thought they were winding that down? ie they are keeping 2G and a basic
data channel for smart meters and stuff, but they aren't providing big
chunks of bandwidth for smartphone users who have mostly all migrated to
3/4/5G. The 2G spectrum that was previously used for that bandwidth has
mostly been refarmed over to 4G or 5G, leaving only a barebones 2G network.

So I'd expect 2G to operate worse than it did in the iPhone 1's heyday, and
perhaps that might affect the bandwidth you see (not just the number of
concurrent users of the 2G network).

Back in 2008 my "employer" provided me with a Blackberry 8900 for work use. It had GPRS and Edge, but not 3G. Web access was painfully slow (as was the phone itself), however things like email updated quite happily in the background.

These days email is mostly HTML rather than mainly text, so this might not work so well if you receive a lot.

Lots of places are like this, my sister's old place in the sticks (SMS in stone section, voice upstairs or the bottom of the garden), similarly in large steel frame buildings.

Yes, you (we all) need to keep moving forward from time to time. That's
the way with all technological stuff - progress leaves the old stuff to
museums and the like.

(I love steam trains, but I wouldn't dream of trying to run a modern
railway with them. For example.)

Some old smartphones which use only 3G or lower will stop working. How
many years back do you have to go to when such phones were on sale?

There’ll be someone muttering that their 405 line TV can’t get a signal…

I thought 2G was to remain because of emergency alarms, switching of
smart meters and some other purposes.
