A maximum of 10 years, they could decide to pull the plug sooner

Three were the first to offer 3G, but as that was their first offering,
the y had no legacy 2G, initially they offered fallback onto a Orange's
2G network, but they eventually killed-of that arrangement ...

My 2016 phone which is in pristine condition and works perfectly should
not become obsolete after 7 years just because Vodafone decide to switch
off their 3G network early.

Conversely, why should I have to pay anywhere from £500 upwards just to
get back to the position I am in now?

In 2016, 4G would have been pretty normal for a smartphone?

Possibly, but who knew 3G would be switched off so soon?

Perhaps you are willing to pay Vodafone for their economic losses to keep
3G going for you? 3G compared to 4G is not so efficient for the spectrum
used. Reusing 3G spectrum for 4G uses benefits the users as everyone gets a
better service. The death of your phone is for the greater good.
