Hi folks!

When updating my old Toshiba laptop yesterday I espied a "Hidden
Network" apparently connected to my computer.

Here's a screenshot of what I saw:- https://jmp.sh/HovRfCR6

Can anyone provide some further insight, please.

I don't think he can because he can only do things as per his dusty book
and that's not been updated (content / technology / morality) for a
couple of thousand years now. ;-(

That connection clearly indicates "secured". Your computer cannot
accidentally connect to it. A correct password is required.

Agreed! Can you suggest how I could/should investigate further?

I've mainly been using Apple computers and devices since 2009 so,

If you connected to it without realising, then the SSID (network name)
and password must have been stored on the device you used.
Unless (of course) someone else logged into it from your device.
Let us know if your own router is in the list.

Hi Ed :-)

I snipped the list - mine WAS showing at the top when I took the photograph!

I'd just done a complete 'Recovery' of the computer (Windows10) but it
is old now (maybe 10 years) and has been used for all manner of Internet
explorations over the years!

I'm trying to think of a good reason to hide your SSID, but can't find one.
For example, let's imagine you want to screen it from the eyes of
somebody. Well, if they tried to log onto it, couldn't find it, but then
noticed the new Hidden Network, they could simply click on that.
There must be something I'm overlooking here. Perhaps someone can tell us.

A way more likely to confound any unwarranted access would be to rename
the SSID to something better camouflaged; BT-HJ132ZXC or EE-RTGJ097-19
or SKY-TYMKO180.
I have a local user who seems obsessed with renaming his/her SSID.
"Susan's private line", "Scarborough Fayre", "N's connection" are a few
I recall.

That seems like a security risk if ever there was one! ;-)

A poster here, Dustin J. Cook, is a former Black Hat Hacker and has
tried for years to hurt other Internet users.
He wrote real-life viruses and released them to the world. Here's one:-

His current 'User Name' on the Usenet is Gremlin.

Just so you know. He was never caught and punished.

In Windows, that entry can be a "collection point for damaged Wifi info".

Regular services, during some sort of technical flap, can end up
classified as Hidden Networks, requiring the network stack to be reset
by the user.

The entry can "hide" multiple services which lack a broadcast SSID.
When you select that link and log in, you will be asked for a progression
of info, to identify which of the services of that class, you're
connecting to. So rather than showing multiple "Hidden Network" icons,
there is only one.

When I had a Wifi card in my desktop here, for test, nothing in
the neighbourhood was Hidden. They all had names.

The Wifi module in a lot of equipment, can be unplugged.
That's an option for those who feel they're connected to something naughty,
or that they're being spied on.

For David, unplugging is definitely the right answer.
No menu ?? Joy. That Ethernet connector on the machine works
just great for computing. No need of Wifi. This is why, when
I fitted Wifi cards for point to point test, I removed
them right afterwards. Not interested in Wifi. Or the
things that cause Wifi. I would be more in favor of Wifi,
if only the 60Ghz version was used, and the signal refused
to leave the room. That's my idea of Wifi.

Since secured(password required to connect/acces) the difference in
other shown secured wifi networks is as you noted the SSID not broadcast.

In this case, it means nothing else.
- i.e. present due to the router or modem-router or Windows ability to
show it - just like all other secured networks

Keep your AV up to date; keep your firewall active. And bear in mind
that the generation of kids whose delight it was to vandalise dad's new
technology has now grown into adulthood and acquired other interests.
The malware these days comes from highly tech-savvy criminals out to
make money, not win kudos.

David, you must have a "Kick Me" sign on the back of your shirt. That's the same
shirt that has "I'm Stupid!" emblazoned across the front.

BTW, that's a nice blend of harmlessly true and blatantly false statements
you've made above. Good show, chum. Once again, you've shown everyone what you
are.

Thank you, Ed. :-D

Although I don't believe that AV is strictly necessary on Windows 10, I
am actually running AVG on that machine.

Have you ANY idea how to remove "Hidden Network" - stop the words from
showing on my screen?

*NO* - don't be silly!

You're confusing me with Dustin. He reaped the whirlwind when once I was
a bit irritated with him and asked for some help! Proof, here:-

Nothing false in what *I* say, "Kelly"! :-P

Dustin has NEVER accepted the truth. That's down to him, not me.

Get rid of that bloated AVG; Windows Security has been protecting my
boxes of tricks for years - successfully.
"Hidden Network" can be translated into other languages. Try Google
Translate or ChatGPT. Or maybe change Windows language.
Oh, and while you're speaking to ChatGPT, thank the little bot for its
recent chat with me. I went walking along the Rochdale Canal, and I
passed so many locks that I had to research. There are an average of 3
locks per mile; the reason being the up-and-downness of the landscape it
traverses.

I think I'll do just that! Thanks for the prompt!

I've been thinking about this! What I suspect is that it's part of the
UK National BT Wi-Fi system so that any BT subscriber can log-in to the
router of ANY BT customer and can use the Internet by providing their
own BT ID - or pay for the privilege! https://www.btwifi.co.uk/

*BELAY THAT*!!!

I'm misremembered - that wasn't the reason! That canal can take boats up
to 72 feet (the longest ones ever built). Perhaps it was because one has
to go through the middle of Manchester, a place most sensible boaters
avoid.
I can't be sure until my navigator returns from supervising the new
members of the Bridge club (cards, not waterways!)

You might do better navigating from Loch Ness into Loch Lochy.

We went out on 'Nessie Hunter IV' with George Edwards when motorcycle
touring Scotland one year.

He had previously videoed the bottom of the Loch (Ness) and it was
interesting to see how flat and empty it was (because it was previously
a V shaped valley that had partly filled with sediment).

Too dark for any vegetation to grow, outside the very edges so nothing
much down there for animals to live on, especially big ones. ;-)

What was silly? You keep showing everyone how intellectually damaged you are.
That's on you.

>You're confusing me with Dustin.

You're confusing me with someone who doesn't know better. I've known about you
and your shady ways for at least a dozen years. I'm not likely to confuse you
with someone else. That wasn't even a good try, on your part.

You're hopelessly delusional. I'd suggest drinking less, but it seems that the
damage is done.

Oh really? Shall I point it out, or will you just run away and hide behind "I

I guess you've missed most of his posts then. That's down to you.

Turn off the WiFi or find the owner of that access point and ask them to
reconfigure on your behalf.

What's with the childish questions, David? This stuff is so basic that even a
simpleton like you shouldn't have any problems with it.
