Some parts of 64 bit Adobe reader appear to still be 32 bit, for
instance some stuff to do with auto updating stays as 32 bit and, IIRC,
it stays in "Program Files (x86)".

That's true. It is common for x64 programs to continue to include and
where applicable/designed to use x86 code for a variety of tasks. Windows
x64 uses the WOW64 subsystem(Windows-32 bit-On-Windows-64bit) to handle
those.
Yet...
-Unrelated to the op's issue.
Unrelated to needing to scrub out mixed 32 bit installed version when 64
bit is installed.

Hi Brian,

I found another one this week.

1) in Control Panel "programs and features", remove Acrobat
reader and any associated Acrobat junkware.

2) go to both Program File directories. Remove Adobe
acrobat files. They are under the "Adobe" folder.
Also remove adobe/acrobat from both the program files
"common files" directories as well

3) download and install
https://ardownload2.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobat/win/AcrobatDC/2300620380/AcroRdrDCx642300620380_en_US.exe

HTH,

Yes, and you will find some stuff, probably mainly or completely to do
with updating gets installed in:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe"
including a 32 bit program that runs in the background whenever you use
Windows.
