At the cost of some convenience, thunderbird (and I suspect other mail
clients) no longer recognise it as a URL, so it's not clickable, you
have to copy and paste it.

Good morning all,

I have some question.

I need at least two 14-16 TB hard drives which will be used as a back
up for my data.
On eBay, sellers from China sell for far lower new drives.
Anyone bought these drives before successfully?

I have been give a monitor that have both display port and a hdmi
ports.
This model:
https://www.dell.com/en-uk/shop/dell-24-monitor-s2421hs/apd/210-axkq/monitors-monitor-accessories
I want to use it for my fathers Dell optiplex 790 which has only VGA.
It runs Win 10 pro 22h2
I opened the case, motherboard has pci express slots.
So if I buy this:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/392164763545?hash=item5b4ed76799:g:z~UAAOSweM5kSAjA&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA4B6XIMs0nY8PnnwA5qUU%2B14CP%2BFHoPf4NXwzN6tUknx5r19YlzS3SyXVzwoyUCkkoNPSsYJS0xD6wH3F4WFrWhSoJJC%2Bi%2FewT%2BD543OebDwNb7S4GwgydY0KzYciDvLFtNLOLHresIxHyOhzN9VgMuW5mgQ3rbP4cgDlkmAztXDBji1MQ61qxBvJAHEdh4WT2I5KP5rGd35hBY4AeGnE5%2F0HymCVGQfVcnnIeBaHt%2FgTWQz3%2BynnkmILyYcm8%2FIV6wcO61YzrThGVKsBOFLgKUCcQE87SnCCThmr3ym9fYKa%7Ctkp%3ABFBMqMz3q_9h
Then I do not need to buy any vga to hdmi converter?

will this work if I do not buy a separate graphics card?

I would never buy a disk that big unless from a reputable local source.

Are these drives going to be SSD types or spinning rust ? - there is

The Dell Optiplex has a Display Port on the back.

What you need is a Dp to HMDI cable.

14-16 TB SSDs? Yes they exist, but they cost a fortune. It's highly
unlikely that that's what he's talking about.

Optiplex 790 appears to be Intel Generation 2 technology(reasonably
older). Also has onboard Intel GPU...that chip pretty much determines
your viewing experience.

The 790 and the Dell 24" monitor both have Display Port connectors.

Imo, just use a Display Port cable.

And if spinning rust : standard or shingled. That latter form is quite
new, and as far as I can tell has teething(?) problems.

P.s.
Dan : did you know that you can, from those ebay links, chop off anything
from the "?" and still get the right page (there might be a lot of data in
those arguments there thats nobodies business).

Also, it makes the post way more readable. :-)

Dan,

> OK
> I just copied and pasted the links.

I know you did. but thats what I wanted to make you aware of : when pasting
such ginormous, unreadable links you might divulge way more than you want
to. They might put anything in those right-of-the-question-mark arguments,
upto-and-including your username and, if they are stupid, even your customer
ID ...

And there is also quite a bit of self-interest in it : me clicking such a
link might signal the company I (read: my IP) know you. And although thats
not a secret, I have no wish to advertise that to a company.

Regards,
Rudy Wieser

Up to 2560 x 1600 @ 60Hz (DP)

And that would give a better picture than VGA or
VGA converted to some other standard.

Up to 2048 x 1536 @ 75Hz (VGA only) <=== reflections on cable, at this set of conditions

The monitor is:

Native Resolution
Full HD (1080p) 1920 x 1080 at 75 Hz

Since you're cabled up and running OK, you can:

msinfo32.exe

Components
Display Resolution 1920 x 1080 x 60 hertz <=== it should give current conditions,
whatever they are.

*******

Hard drives come in PMR <=== perpendicular magnetic recording (guard band between tracks)
CMR conventional magnetic recording (same as PMR, just another stupid term)

SMR <=== shingled magnetic recording (PMR but with zero space between, in 7 track cluster
can be a little uneven on writes. This type not recommended for NAS applications,
due to the performance behavior on writes).

Endurance class is defined by:

110 TBW per year (terabyte-writes per year) <=== perhaps eight hours a day
300 TBW per year
550 TBW per year <=== enterprise class, continuous operation

110 TBW drives = no micro-positioner, no high-fly detection (a DSP feature), basic drive
550 TBW drives = voice coil, two additional positioners for RAFF, high-fly detection

Most 3.5" drives of note now, are 26mm tall (one inch drive approx)

Platter count varies with capacity

6TB = 4*1.5TB platter, 3*2TB platter, plenty of head-stack space, standard thickness platter

14TB = 7*2TB PMR, reduced thickness platter (glass?)
= some 2.2TB platters, SMR, same reduced thickness platters

22TB = 10*2.2TB?, really thin platters, could be SMR
There are HAMR, MAMR and some other technique, to improve density.
I don't see an incentive to spend extra for these, for home usage.

When shopping then, some of the above descriptive terms are not on the datasheet.

Drives at, say, 8TB thru 22TB, are helium filled and sealed.
My 6TB drives here (WD Black) are air filled and have a breather hole and are PMR.
Helium drives then, would be unaffected by chain-smoking of tobacco,
as you are not depending on the hepafilter for protection from contamination.
By you shopping for larger drives, you will be getting helium.
The helium drives use slightly less electricity when rotating.

The branding got fixed up a bit. The SMR (shingled) to avoid, are on the left.

https://images.anandtech.com/doci/15878/red-fam_575px.png

There is a 14TB column in the table here, and you can compare
the various "qualities" of drives, versus their price.

https://www.anandtech.com/show/12075/best-consumer-hdds

They mention that some of the shoddy drives are 5200RPM, and
I was using a 5900 RPM drive the other day as an OS drive,
and boy, is the seek on that thing slow! Drives like that
are definitely backup material, as the drive works perfectly
fine if doing sequential continuous writes. Most of the drives
should be 7200RPM at least. The 10K and 15K RPM drives are too small
on capacity, to be in the running for an every day purchase and are
not listed in the article.

Deja Vu...eh! <g>
In the not to distant past, we had a discussion in this group, iirc,
on DP vs. HDMI vs. resolution(supported) as a function of the GPU,
monitor, Windows.

The Optiplex 780 and 790 build-in graphics, are
likely to be first generation DP with a 330MHz
clock limit. And that's why the resolutions supported
are a bit limited.

I have a refurb 780 here, but I've never bothered to
test the DP on it. Even in that state, it's still
a better choice than the VGA.

Both my computers here, use external active adapters
for conversion from one standard to another. Thank goodness
the digital graphics connectors, have a power pin on the
connector for this.

They told you: just remove the text after the "?".

Your link:
<https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/392164763545?hash=item5b4ed76799:g:z~UAAOSweM5kSAjA&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA4B6XIMs0nY8PnnwA5qUU%2B14CP%2BFHoPf4NXwzN6tUknx5r19YlzS3SyXVzwoyUCkkoNPSsYJS0xD6wH3F4WFrWhSoJJC%2Bi%2FewT%2BD543OebDwNb7S4GwgydY0KzYciDvLFtNLOLHresIxHyOhzN9VgMuW5mgQ3rbP4cgDlkmAztXDBji1MQ61qxBvJAHEdh4WT2I5KP5rGd35hBY4AeGnE5%2F0HymCVGQfVcnnIeBaHt%2FgTWQz3%2BynnkmILyYcm8%2FIV6wcO61YzrThGVKsBOFLgKUCcQE87SnCCThmr3ym9fYKa%7Ctkp%3ABFBMqMz3q_9h>

converts to:

<https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/392164763545>

As simple as that.
