User-Agent: G2/1\.0

to your killfile, you wont see the spam anymore. however this was some days ago so
the sender/bots might have changed. anyway if you know how to do this, worth a try.

i agree but as the spam seems to come from googles gmail, i would have thought an easy
solution would be to introduce another layer before you post. ATM u sign in and post, but
if they had an additional layer like captcha and i am not a bot, that surely would prevent
this spam. I have to go through that on most sites, so its strange that google havnt done
this themselves, unless the bot controllers have actually paid google to allow them
to post their spam in this way, assuming that the sites they advertise are real.

There is no good way of telling where the attack is coming from without some pretty sophisticated tools. These spammers routinely use spoofing software that attaches fake email addresses and fake metadata that identifies the site of origin. There is a layer of scanning that looks for a mismatch between the email address and the originating server, so the spammers fake both in concert, and since more people use Gmail than anything else, faking a Gmail origin is pretty standard.

The spam is definitely a hindrance, but it is not like there are dozens of relevant messages getting drowned out, of late.

I have done reported them but as you said, it gets tedious when there are so many being posted repeatedly.

The real fun is when new messages get attached to earlier ones. Or one gets sent with a new timestamp...
I can do about a screenful in less than 20 minutes. Fast enough that sometimes I have to go through a captcha...

(I say this for the sake of efficiency, not one-upmanship.)

If you are using Google Groups with 30 messages per page, then by opening half a screen's worth in new tabs one right after the other (right click, Open link in new tab), then opening, flagging and closing each new tab (click on tab, click three dots, Report message as abuse, Submit report, close tab), it takes 7 clicks per spam message, all executable in about 5 seconds once you get in the groove, so even accounting for those with responses that have to be flagged multiple times, a reload half-way though to see how far you have gotten or if you inadvertently missed one, and inevitable slowdown due to tedium, one can still do a whole screen of spam in under 5 minutes, and it doesn't invoke captcha (at least not for me).

In case anybody hasn't realized, the spam purging is cyclical. The deletions are going out once a day at the same time and purging the spam. Then a few hours later, the spammers launch another cycle. And around and around it goes until/unless some administrator decides it needs more proactive intervention.

I've noticed that the spam seems to be cleared out at least twice a day.

For me when all or most of the messages on a Google Groups page are spam, it is easiest to select all of the messages on the page by checking the box at the top left. Then I scroll down and uncheck any legitimate messages. Then I select the spam symbol on the upper right and submit the spam report.

yes indeed, so its puzzling that google is having such difficulty themselves.
unless they are in league with the spammers. money talks. but if it really
is just spam, its incredibly pointless the effort theyr going to. from what

You do realize that marking 90 straight messages as spam today isn't a viable solution, right? Who knows how long this will go on for?

Reporting it ISN'T DOING THE JOB. It's up to the admin to block the accounts from posting.

Yes, it is tedious, but there was a pattern in this thread of posts saying 'it's gone now', then hours later 'it's back again', to be repeated the next day. I was pointing out that though these were being reported as changes to the status quo, they were really just non-noteworthy blow-by-blow manifestations of the same continuing pattern.
