Ah, but we're talking local time, and in this case mid-eastern Canada.

OK, a North-America-centric view, if you prefer.

Many years ago (1962, I think) I spent the night at a motel in Calgary.
The television news started with pictures of several capitals
(Washington DC, Ottawa, London, Paris ...), but the news itself did't
mention anything that had happened more than 10 km from Calgary.

I'm planning to be in Calgary in a couple of months' time. With any
luck, I'll remember to check on that. Then moving on to the culture of
Vancouver, after which the pub on the island, the Nanaimo bar...

Well, yes, and I wouldn't be surprised if Peter's local news wasn't
similar, although maybe different intro pictures. I also imagine that
your local news is dominated by things that happen during your daytime.

Less so, I think. At the moment we get plenty of news about Gaza, the
USA, and Haiti.

Likewise here; and a lot of that news is about things that happened last
night.

It's important to understand that Australian TV has both publicly owned
networks and commercial networks. Public TV has plenty of international
news, but the commercial networks are a lot more parochial.
