I often see a fire truck there; the firefighters are inside shopping
for stuff for the firehouse. It occupies more than one space, of
course.

It probably wouldn't fit in many parking lots here. Quite often the
parking lot is under the supermarket or mall, for instance.

Perhaps the local fire department is more courteous than yours.
They park off to the side of the building, not in the fire lane.

Frankly, other than the public image issue, I don't see a major problem
with them parking in the fire lane. The fire lane is there to ensure
passage and room for a fire truck in the even of an emergency. If there
is an emergency that requires their presence, they are already there.
