FT:

Ivory Coast 0 - Ecquatorial Guinea 4

Guinea-Bissau 0 - Nigeria 1

Group A Final:

1st Ecquatorial Guinea 7pts

2nd Nigeria 7pts

3rd Ivory Coast 3pts

4th Guinea-Bissau 0pts

Ecquatorial Guinea and Nigeria advance.

Ivory Coast could advance as a higher ranked third placed side but will be up against it with 3 points and a goal difference of minus three.

They’re calling it the most humiliating day in Ivorian football.

60 minutes:

Cape Verde 1 - Egypt 1

Mozambique 0 - Ghana 1

If things finish as they stand it’s 1st Cape Verde, 2nd Ghana. Egypt would be third with 3 points but a better GD than Ivory Coast, so they might have half a chance of going through?

What drama! Egypt practically play the last 10 my minutes in Cape Verde’s area but just as it seems like they won’t make the breakthrough a direct ball finds Mostafa Mohammed who jumps high to poke the ball over the keeper and into the net.......

.....BUT.......

.......there is VAR review for a possible handball...........Mohammed had his arm out.......VAR review goes on forever......first angle doesn’t look handball.......

........but the second angle looks like the ball hit his arm!

.........VAR decision........

Goal given!

2-1 Egypt!

But Cape Verde then equalise in injury time following a goal mouth scramble! 2-2!

And in the other game Mozambique have come back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Ghana!

It’s all happening here at the AFCON!

FT:

Cape Verde 2 - Egypt 2

Mozambique 2 - Ghana 2

Group B Final:

1st Cape Verde 7pts

2nd Egypt 3 pts

3rd Ghana 2pts

4th Mozambique 2 pts (goal difference)

Mozambique’s injury time equaliser sent Egypt through at the expense of Ghana. It also did Ivory Coast a favour in that Ghana are behind them in the third placed team rankings (Egypt would have been ahead of them), if another third placed team finishes on less than 3 points minus 3 GD Ivory Coast are through.

Ghana could still go through but need two third placed teams to do worse than 2 points and a minus 2 GD.

Yeah pretty wild ending to both games.

When I posted Ghana were leading 2-0 and Egypt losing 1-0, with around
20 minutes left I think. Which would have meant Ghana second and Egypt
third with 2 points (probably not getting a best 3rd place),

Tomorrow's games should be interesting. In Grup C Senegal will end up
first or second, Guinea can end in 1st, 2nd or 3rd ( and should qualify
with a best third place finish), so both will qualify. The The Gambia
can not qualify and Cameroon can finish second on GD if they score a two
goal victory over the the gambia, otherwise they need to win to hope to
qualify.

Ekambi heads Cameroon 1-0 up against The Gambia!

Guinea and Senegal 0-0 after 60 minutes.

As it stands Senegal, Guinea and Cameroon would all advance (ranked in that order).

Senegal 1-0 up against Guinea.

Which means if Cameroon score another they would go through in second place on goals scored.

However, as soon as I type that The Gambia equalise with Jallow’s volley. They had been looking dangerous for a while.

Cameroon now third with two points and minus 2 GD, which would probably see them knocked out.

Ekambi has come close twice for Cameroon (hit the crossbar once) but The Gambia are playing like men possessed as two goals would put them through!

82 minutes played.

And The Gambia are rewarded for all their attacking play as Colley puts them 2-1 up.

But then an own goal by The Gambia as the defender slide tackles a cross into his own net! 2-2 86 minutes.

Cameroon head in a corner on 90 minutes to go 3-2 up! Only minutes ago we were 2-1 down! That’s why they call us the Indomitable Lions!

So then The Gambia “equalise” from a corner but the replay shows this was not a header but more a “hand of God” style handball!

VAR reviewing it - goal cancelled!

This AFCON just keeps on giving!

It’s over! The Indomitable Lions have lived up to their name by coming back from 2-1 down to beat The Gambia 3-2!

And it gets better - Senegal scored a second goal to beat Guinea 2-0, which means Cameroon finish second ahead of Guinea (same GD but Cameroon scored more goals so rank higher).

Mark, my fellow Indomitable Lion - I told you we’d do it!

All credit to The Gambia, who for spells were the better team and played like men possessed.

Guinea progress as there at least two third placed sides with worse records.

Group C Final

1st Senegal 9pts

2nd Cameroon 4pts

3rd Guinea 4pts (goals scored)

4th The Gambia 0pts

Mauritanian knocks out Algerian and I would say deservedly so. First win
for them in AFCON. Angola win the other match and the group.

It seems Algeria was starting with the younger players and waited until
the second half to bring on the "old stars", but it didnt make much
difference.

Indeed,FT:

Angola 2 - Burkina Faso 2

Mauritania 1 - Algeria 0

Group D Final:

1st Angola 7pts

2nd Burkina Faso 4pts

3rd Mauritania 3 pts

4th Algeria 2pts

Angola, Burkina Faso and Mauritania all advance.

Today's results also see Ghana officially eliminated as only Zambia can theoretically finish worse than them as a third place team. Hosts Ivory Coast are still hanging on by the skin of their teeth and will be hoping Namibia and Zambia don't get anything from their matches tomorrow. A draw for both would see the hosts eliminated.

I would not be at all surprised to see Tunisia jump into second place
with a win, leaving South Africa potentially in 3rd place, and most
likely better off for GD than Cote D'Ivoire. Or South Africa end up 4th
if Namibia can grind out a draw vs. Mali. Tunisia are still an OK side
and regular world cup qualifier.

The hosts could be more optimistic about things going their way in the
Group F, if Morocco and DR Congo take their games seriously. But this
is AFCON, so who knows ?

It also did Ivory Coast a favour in that Ghana are behind them in the third placed team rankings (Egypt would have been ahead of them), if another third placed team finishes on less than 3 points minus 3 GD Ivory Coast are through.

So, when I was tipping Ghana to win the African Cup of nations and they kept losing in the semi-final, and then I didn't tip them to win it and they finished runners-up, so I tipped them to win it again, only for them to lose in the semi-final again, and I asked when Ghana were going to finally win it, I was told (by Sven I think) "When you stop tipping". Well I haven't tipped them to win it since about 2017, and they're getting worse, not better! What's going on?

Lol

It’s as if they weren’t aware they needed to win to qualify, no sense of urgency at all.

FT:

Tunisia 0 - South Africa 0

Mali 0 - Namibia 0

Group E Final:

1st Mali 5 pts

2nd South Africa 4pts

3rd Namibia 4pts

4th Tunisia 2pts

Mali, South Africa and Namibia all advance.

HT:

Zambia 0 - Morocco 1

Ziyech smashes in a rebound from the keeper.

Tanzania 0 - DR Congo 0

As things stand Morocco 1st, DR Congo 2nd. Zambia 3rd but with two points, so Ivory Coast would qualify at their expense. One goal from Zambia would reverse that.

Both matches finished as per the half time scores.

Group F final:

1st Morocco 7pts

2nd DR Congo 3pts

3rd Zambia 2pts

4th Tanzania 2 pts

Morocco and DR Congo advance. However improbable it looked st the start of the week, Zambia and Ghana have finished behind Ivory Coast in the third placed rankings so the Elephants live to fight another day. Seems only fair given they’ve built new stadiums to host this AFCON.

So Ghana, Algeria and Tunisia all go out in the 1st round!

Is this evidence that the gap between the best and the weaker teams is shrinking, or is it evidence that African teams in general are getting weaker compared to the likes of Argentina, Spain and France?
