My mother was a Baptist. She used to take my brother and me to chapel on Sunday mornings. The preacher was very charismatic and had studied in Denmark, so something a bit different in the Welsh valleys. I always suspected that she had a bit of a crush on him. Her efforts to make us into good Baptists didn't go particularly far, though.

My father, like my mother, was a doctor. He read assiduously and behind his bed were several books in the Christian tradition. He claimed to be agnostic but his upbringing in the home of a preacher may have left him with doubts that fuelled his reading matter. He was highly influenced by church music and passed that on to me. I used to sit next to him on the wide piano stool as he played Bach. We had a Bechstein grand that I believe was once owned by Sir Hamilton Harty, at least that's what my father claimed. He was no stranger to tall stories, though.

So that's my background and why Bach is so much in my blood. "Almighty Bach - O Bach Fach!" as Organ Morgan says in Under Milkwood. And that's another connection. My father was in school with Dylan Thomas, though in different years. His English teacher was Dylan's father. So I guess some of that rubbed off on me as well.

Thanks for this Andy. The first composition that I ever heard by Bach was the great Prelude and Fugue in A Minor for organ. I was just a young kid, about 8 years old, but had a strong feeling that the music was conveying the infinite and the eternal.

I’ve always agreed with Andras Schiff and Murray Perahia that J.S. Bach is the greatest of all composers.

Don't know if DK is into female composers. His repertoire has the same range as Rubinstein's: middle of the road, nothing too old or too new. Bach is already too old.

Without any doubt, Bach is top of the heap. The English Hymnal is also a book I play a lot, along with an Amish copy of hymns I have, which is much treasured. I also think people often forget the cantatas that Bach wrote, many of which are sublime. In this regard I am a huge Karl Richter fan.

If only people like Liszt would have absorbed these hymn books and saved themselves 9,768,492 of meaningless notes producing aimless meandering stuff, they might have become decent composers.
