it's one of the bigger income streams for many artists when playing
somewhere like a folk festival. The fees paid by the promoter just about
covers the band's overheads for a van, wear & tear on instruments etc.
Their wages come from the merch including CDs.

Certainly my brother's experience in 40 years of making a living from music
mostly in the Cajun/Zydeco niche. He was at Shrewsbury this year, not as a
performer but as a maker, repairer and retailer of melodeons. Now, that is
a businees that has been quite profitable for him, when individual
instruments can sell for �2000.
