The truth is, Vicky, I am more than a little in awe of your steering
ticket - especially after reading Down to the Sea in Ships by Horatio
Clare(ISBN: 9780099526292) about his time as writer in residence
aboard Maersk line vessels - but I never could resist a blatant
feedlines'r'us like "Party," "Boat" and "Thames."

And thank you, Kate and John.

Well a large tanker does take a while to change course, but out at sea
miles from anywhere or other ships is a good place to learn. I did
take one out from Kuwait though, through the narrow (in 1970) port
entrance. Husband was Chief Officer then I think and would not have
let me. Captain thought it good to have supernumaries who could be
useful.

I may have posted about this before, but I vaguely knew a guy called Billy Baxter, who held the blind solo world land speed record - on a motorcycle. 164mph.

People are incredible.

Indeed! (My friend worked on the internal IT helpdesk for the local
council, and most who used him didn't know he was blind.)

Though not all of them have or need guide dogs, and those who don't
sometimes get a little fed up with the assumption that they do - though
usually hide it, as they know people only mean well.

I remember the chap (Peter White I think) who presents "in touch", the
R4 prog. for the VH/VI and those interested in the subject, recounting
the following tale - whether true or not, I don't know: once, when
wandering round the London Underground, someone asked where his dog was
(he didn't have one), and - maybe he was having a bad day - he replied
"oh! I've left him on the train!". To which the person replied with
words that made his blood run cold: "don't worry." He had visions of the
entire tube network being brought to a halt, in search of a non-existent
guide dog.

(The male half of my blind friends has excellent perception of his
surroundings - particularly hearing; he can "hear" things like lampposts
and other obstructions, presumably from their reflections of ambient
noise. The female half doesn't, but being female, petite, and blind

I asked Peter White when we were in the studio with him one day about ‘had
he considered a guide dog?’ He had considered, yes but felt he was fine
without one - so the London Tube is safe as fa as he is concerned.

When my cataract was problematical to the extent I was experiencing
considerable difficulty crossing a ver busy main road on my way to work,
the social service worker was encouraging me to ask for a guide dog; I said
to them that the road I cross is so busy, the dog would probably fall
asleep waiting for a safe opportunity to cross! I then started using a
white cane for the express purpose of crossing that road.

It was Peter White, yes. I’ve heard the tale several times. Yes,
echolocation is something many people with very little or no sight can
develop and surprisingly quickly. I think it comes naturally because when
I asked a friend who’s been totally blind since he was 9, he said he did.
His wife does, and she didn’t lose her most of sight till she was 14. It
explains to a degree why people walk confidently with a long cane. What I
also assume is that now that we have audio described maps one uses
headphones for, the echolocation has gone by the board.

In the US, mobility training is *brutal* but works. Everyone is
blindfolded as a matter of course and everyone must learn to navigate using
their hearing. In China, if one’s lucky to be treated as a human with
sight loss, they’ll be trained to use their hearing: a tall enough order in
itself. At the end of training, they’re sent off on a long trip of several
miles in their city with long cane and mobile. They can only ask one
person one question apparently. Or so I’ve read.

My on the ground knowledge which is the blind teaching others (and they
teach to UK standards) is some weeks hard graft but will include more than
just mobility going A to B, but going in a restaurant, and one or two
other basics, then those people return to their home city able to teach
others. The downside, there’s no formal certificate so it might well
deteriorate as the chain lengthens. Typical of the world, there’ll be one
year where money’s given for formal training, then withdrawn once the
officials have smirked at the cameras. The photo only articles I’ve read
where it’s all about the sighted staff, not the guide dog and owner is
unbelievable.

I've been deprived of umra by the news server for a few days (again), or I
might have suggested you listen to the Desert Island Discs repeat this
morning, to hear Peter relate that story himself.

Stephanie's hearing improved as her sight worsened. It was explained to
us that her brain was no longer receiving information from the optic
nerve (which was being destroyed by the Batten's) and her brain had
capacity to apply to better processing of the delivery of information
via the aural nerves.

It was from him - I think on an In Touch - that I heard it originally.

Since you have mentioned Peter White's Desert Island Disc programme,
would this be a good point to ask whether umrats have been listening
to the Thursday afternoon Legends documentary?

I write as a long time fan - a very long time fan - and I think this
is probably the very worst musical biopod that I have ever
experienced. I keep listening because I am a very long time fan but I
also keep asking myself why I keep punishing myself in this way? Does
anybody else have any thoughts?

I will let you know when I get there. I have downloaded a lot of JM
material that was broadcast whilst I was Stateside of the Pond and so I
am a little behind with listening at the moment.

OTOH I have now seen Nashville, Chattanooga, Casey Jones, Memphis,
Graceland, Atlanta, Houston and New Orleans (not in that order) and have
eaten gumbo etc.

Very good holiday.

Of those, I've only visited Nashville and because the Greyhound was so
late I missed the opportunity to look around the city and all I saw of
it was the bus station. Still, it was a very nice bus station.

Did you have grits? I had grits in Dallas. Never again.

>Very good holiday.

Delighted that you had such a good time. US politics may be a tad
bizarre for our tastes but US people are, in my opinion, delightful
and their places and scenery are spectacular.
