'They' change things and it's the end of the world.

I was listening to Fed Up earlier, with the folk complaining bitterly
about TA Omnibus being moved to an hour later on a Sunday morning,
swapping with Desert Island Discs.

So who are these people who can't lie in bed for another hour on a
Sunday to catch the omnibus? I mean, what are Sunday mornings for?
(Lying in bed, I mean, not listening to the omnibus, which I don't do,
They can't be morning churchgoers because

They tried moving the omnibus before broadcasting it in the evening.
The next controller put it back in its rightful place.

I'm a Sunday morning churchgoer, but even if I wasn't I wouldn't be
listening to the omnibuscrash. I lost interest shortly after Nigel fell
off the roof, and haven't listened since. I remain here because I enjoy
the company.

I'm happy about it because it gives me longer before I need to dive for
the off button. I do still listen to TA but once is enough so, as I
generally listen in the evenings, I can't stand hearing the omnibus as well.

I didn't finish did I? I grow old.

I was going to say that Sunday morning churchgoers would miss it
anyway. Are there many evening services these day? Long ago there were
complaints that evening services had to be disrupted because of Dr
Finlay's Casebook, or the Forsyte Saga, or whatever, but I think you'd
be hard-pressed these days to find an evening service outside a
cathedral evensong.

Maybe the change of timing might result in undercooked sprouts with the
Sunday roast. I rather imagine that there's a large overlap between
those who are complaining about the timing and those who always insist
on a roast Sunday lunch with the family round.

NB I have nothing against a traditional roast dinner as long as brussels
sprouts are kept well away from it. But I have a lot against preparing
one and even more against clearing up afterwards. And don't get me
started on extended family mealtimes! If I wanted a roast dinner I'd go
out to a decent carvery for it.

Rosie

I was going to say "Yes" but then realised that all my recent experience
is of college services (including one college which doubles as a
cathedral). Back when youngest two sons sang in St Giles (Oxford, not
Edinburgh) which is up until ¬2009 they were certainly singing Sunday
Evensong.

It would come as a shock to the system to discover how sprouts /should/
taste.

But you are correct that one should never serve sprouts with roast gammon.

It depends what variety of church you favour. There are no less than two
evening masses at the Catholic cathedral here (one is in Polish).

No carvery can really do proper gravy, and even a roast can't wait too
long to be eaten. I haven't been to a carvery in years, but the beef was
either cold or overdone and lamb if left too long simply congeals. No,
do it yourself, I say, eat it when it's perfect, and if there's lots
left over there are wonderful recipes for that too.

I remember in the '70s our school chaplain saying plaintively that he
wished more "creatures great and small" would come to his evensong
(which was voluntary).

Again, back in the '70s, they had it on Sundays - but that was a
boarding school.

Never having been a cook, I didn't realise sprouts were all year round:
I thought they were only around Christmas.

I like sprouts, as long as someone else produces them! I must be one of
the half that don't detect the chemical. AIUI, there's a chemical in
sprouts which about half of people can detect and find unpleasant;
apparently, sprout breeders/growers have developed a strain that doesn't
contain that chemical, and in fact most of the sprouts now available are
of that strain (and have been for a decade or two), but those who once
discovered they didn't like them haven't tried them since.

>one and even more against clearing up afterwards. And don't get me

One of my many objections to "cooking"! Especially for one.

Same here - fry-up too. Wetherspoons do a couple of good value sizes of
those!

Wouldn't occur to me to!

I've found a very cheap source of gammon: I buy packets of "cooking
bacon", which is, basically, the odd lumps and offcuts from when they're
making bacon slices - and sold off _very_ cheaply. (The price of bacon
varies amazingly - per unit weight, by about a factor of twelve to one;
the cheapest is the aforesaid cooking bacon, the most expensive
"lardons", which as far as I can see is just bacon cut into little
cubes.) If carefully enough chosen, I can find a packet containing what
are in effect nice pieces of gammon - usually enough for at least two
good meals! I'm a great believer in "cooking bacon" - at least
Sainsburys and Morrisons do it, and I think ASDA, though not Lidl.
Obviously to select the right package, one has to buy in-store, rather
than home delivery.

Lidl used to do cooking bacon but when I tried it it was horrible so I
haven't looked for it in a couple of years.

In the oppoaite direction to yours, careful choice of packs can also
result in good rashers, obviating the need for knife skills when
preparing a bacon sarnie.

One thing that justifies a higher price is how it's made. The lardons I
buy say on the back "prepared with 110g of pork per 100g of finished
product" (or thereabouts), i.e. it's made by salting pork to draw out the
moisture, a slow process which allows it to mature. Cheap bacon is made by
injecting brine into wet pork to make it even wetter. It doesn't fry
properly and tastes horrible. (Even so-called dry cure bacon I've looked
at has about 5% added water.)

I like sprouts. Unfortunately b won't eat them so we never have them.
I quite like ordinary ones but ones fried with bits of bacon are
especially nice.

Washing up together is part of the routine. And a roast in a carvery
doesn't taste the same at all. Home-cooked is much better.

Depends on both the carvery and the home cook.

Plus, a decent roast creates volumes of greasy washing up - and most of
it goes into the 'hand wash' pile, not the dishwasher[1].

[1] Guess who is responsible for the washing-up in this household.

Could it be on a spectrum of liking/disliking?

I used to hate them but now I love them. 'Acquired taste' may have
something to with it yes/no?

I've had some good roasts in restaurants, but as Kate said, the gravy
almost always lets them down.

But I much prefer home cooked, either by myself or waife with whoever
doesn't cook doing the washing up. I am not a stereotypical man-cook
though and don't use every pan and mostly clear up as I go along so it's
only the last minute pots and pans that are left dirty.

I have very fond memories of roasts my Grandma made, almost always roast
beef (overcooked by today's standards) and with a heavy Yorkshire
Pudding served first with the gravy. Billy Cotton's Bandshow or 2-way
Family Favourites on the wireless.

And then my Mum's delicious cooking usually lamb or beef, occasionally
chicken, but that was a rare treat in the early days.

And finally my svigermor and the epic feasts she cooked for family
gatherings that were invariably roast pork with amazing crackling, and
always red cabbage in addition to the normal veggies.

Happy Days

If you are eating bacon, one of my weekend meals during the winter is
often three slices of bacon, cut up and fried till crispy, plenty of
sprouts, cut in half and cooked just right, and half a pack of whole
chestnuts. It's so delicious. Not sure what other vegetable would
substitute for sprouts but I recommend you try to find one and then you
can just buy a small pack of ready-prepared sprouts for you and a
different veg for B. Worth the small effort, IMO.

You remind me of the time (gosh, nearly 30 years ago now!) I found
myself in a place called Castlegregory in Co Kerry on a Saturday
evening, There were loads of people wandering around the streets, older
on the whole than an Italian /passaggiata/ but very much the same sort of
thing. I went to a pub and it was deserted, but I knew it was a good pub
because the barman ('curate' is the correct term I understand but I
don't want to confuse matters) was an expert at Guinness-pouring and
having the next one half-prepared long before I was done with the
first. I asked him where everybody was and he said they were going to
mass. Of course, the pub was rammed a couple of hours (and several
Guinnesses) later. I suppose that was a very early morning mass.

I know St Giles in Reading, heavy on the bells smells and fiery handbags
the way I like it, used to do an evening service because some of the
Quakers from along the alley used to sing in the choir in the
evening. The Episcopalian ("English Kirk") St Brides in Glasgow does
that sort of thing but only in the morning. I haven't been to St
Michaels in Edinburgh, up beyong the Meadows, but I don't think that
does mornings either. The respective High Kirks of St Mungo and St Giles
do evenings do evenings but the presbyterians are no fun.

On the other hand, the size of joint that's manageable and affordable
for a small gathering is neither good quality nor good value. Perhaps
there's an opening for a BYOG carvery.
