Despite turning off the road a few seconds before the collision, the prosecution said Rahman was just as guilty because he had made a "significant contribution" to how Choudhury drove.

Alisha died at the scene following the crash, which occurred at about 1.30pm near the Royal Oldham Hospital.At their trial, Choudhury and Rahman tried to blame each other but the jury unanimously found them both guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.

Choudhury told the jury that he had "driven like an idiot" because he was in a life threatening situation."I wasn’t racing, I was fighting for my life," he said. After conviction Anthony Stanway, Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West, said: “Hamidur Rahman and Omar Choudhury’s manner of driving was selfish and reckless.

"They put many lives at risk that day with the worst possible outcome, the death of a young girl who had her whole life ahead of her.“Neither man took responsibility for their actions, putting Alisha’s family through the further trauma of a trial.

"Nothing can bring Alisha back, but I hope this conviction goes some way to comfort her family at this difficult time.“All drivers have a responsibility to drive safely, this case shows the devastating consequences of not doing so. We will robustly prosecute those who disregard the rules of the road and the safety of pedestrians and other road users.”

Choudhury, of Broadway, Oldham, and Rahman, of Tilbury Street, Oldham, will be sentenced on 4 September.

"Because every time I hear squealing around the corner now, or wait for the bang that I heard that day and know that it's going to be a really bad accident, it does make me very nervous." Another spot on the road which is notorious for incidents is the house on the corner of Yardley Wood Road, belonging to Mohammed Ibrahim Zareian.

Several years ago a car crashed straight through the garden fence and onto his lawn, just as his wife - a keen gardener - had popped inside for a cup of tea. The house has been hit on two other occasions within three years leaving the family scared in case it happens again.

"If that's not a serious incident, I don't know what is," said his next door neighbour Khalid Rashid. "Are we waiting for someone to die? Is that the criteria to do something?" Mr Rashid recalled parking his car near the corner as far back as 1993, when it was smashed into by a speeding car which drove off.

He said: "That is such a dangerous spot there, it is basically law of probability. It's a case of, not if, but when it might happen."

Mr Rashid said "speeding traffic" is the main issue and he regularly sees "people hurtling round" the bend like "bumper cars". "They don't care, they just do not care," he added in frustration.

"I've witnessed a lot of near misses but I have also seen some accidents."- Marie Waldren, a nurse, confirmed. Seven years ago she attended to a victim who was hit directly outside her house by a driver who lost control of their car.

Annie Hobart has been a resident on Hayfield for eight years and gave up her car when she moved and is nervous any time she has to cross the road. "Honestly, you're taking your life in your hands," she said.

"When they approach my house [from both directions] I always think 'are they going to smash into each other?'"

Shahid Malik has lived on the road for 15 years and has a nine-year-old autistic son who is sensitive to the explosive noises coming from souped up car exhausts and revving engines. "For someone like him, it's difficult to sleep, you hear the bang at night time, it's very disturbing, very, very disturbing," Mr Malik said.

He is also concerned for the safety of his family and has even put up railings around his house for protection. Indira Dumasia, who has lived on the road for 30 years, finds the noise and speed scary" especially since the death of her partner.

Several years ago her car was written off after a driver rammed into it as it was parked outside her house overnight. She said: "I just lost my husband two years ago you know.

"My neighbours, they're so good with me, we all look after each other. Any problems, we are there for each other even in the night, so noone wants to move."

Moseley councillor Izzy Knowles (Lib Dem) submitted a petition to the council in July 2022 but was told it would take nine serious collisions to happen within three years before anything was done. She also approached Highways where an engineer suggested installing more signs, but Coun Knowles said: "I'm not sure that would really make much difference, especially if somebody's speeding and they're not concentrating, signage won't really change that."

She has suggested to the residents that a 'modal filter' which would limit traffic to cyclists and pedestrians, restricting car use. The residents need to decide among themselves if they want this and then approach the councillors, who would consider how to fund it (it costs approximately £20,000).

Coun Knowles said that doing the work alongside roadworks on other, nearby streets, could reduce the cost as several roads would benefit from the expensive road closure permit at once. The residents are determined to see change and are gathering support from their neighbours.

Mr Rashid said: "I'm sick and tired of people saying the council doesn't have any money. We are paying council tax, Birmingham City Council is the biggest council in Europe.

"Don't give me that 'I've got no money'. That's rubbish."

Calls have been made to sort out Spalding town centre before there is a ‘real tragedy’ after reports a pensioner was hit by a car.

An elderly man is reported to have been hit as he walked across Hall Place at 11.30am on Wednesday last week - when cars are not supposed to be in the town centre.

Spalding Town Forum chairman Coun Roger Gambba-Jones was told that the incident happened in front of two police officers who did not take any action as the driver apologised - but he is keen not to ‘point the finger’ at the officers.

Vehicles are not supposed to be in the town centre between 10am and 4pm due to the Traffic Regulation order - which is regularly ignored.

The order is held by Lincolnshire County Council but is supposed to be enforced by the police as it is technically a matter of cars on a closed road rather than parking incorrectly.

Now Coun Gambba-Jones and Coun Rob Gibson are hoping to sort out the mess and will be consulting with the public and traders to find out what they want.

Coun Gambba-Jones said: “We have had a very lucky escape. It seems like this person was not going particularly fast but when you think of the speed some of the cars down there it could have been very much worse.

“We have had reports of cars going the wrong way and not slowly.

“This situation can not be ignored - and should not be ignored.

“The next time it could be a parent with a push chair. In that location it would be a real tragedy as everyone believes it to be pedestrianised.”

Coun Gambba-Jones was told that the man was limping after the incident - and also berated by two youths for holding up traffic.

We approached Lincolnshire Police for comment on the incident but they say there is no record.

Coun Gibson said that it was not the first time that an incident had happened.

The access group will be holding its first meeting next week - and Coun Gibson is keen to get the views of traders and shoppers.

He said: “This group has been set up to look at whether we want to keep the restrictions as they are and if we do how do we enforce them. Or if the business owners and public want it changed then what do we change it to and how do we achieve that.

“I think it is important that we speak to people to find out what they want.”

Cyclists kill or maim two pedestrians every week, according to statistics

ALARMING accident statistics have shown a record number of pedestrians are
being killed or seriously injured in crashes with cyclists.

Over the past seven years there have been 25 pedestrians killed in
accidents with bikes and another 700 seriously injured – meaning roughly
two people every week are being killed or badly hurt in crashes with bikes.

The Department of Transport data, which does not state who is at fault in
the accidents, shows three pedestrians were killed in crashes with bikes
last year and another 112 were seriously injured.

A pilot initiative - the first of its kind in the UK – aims to curb vehicle speeds on two roads in the borough where speeding is an issue.

Drivers breaking the 20mph speed limit in Priory Lane, Roehampton and Wimbledon Park Road in Southfields face being issued fines by the council instead of the police. Wandsworth is the first local authority in the UK to be piloting this type of enforcement scheme.

The two roads are both the subject of numerous complaints from local people about excessive vehicle speeds.

The Wandsworth pilot is designed to support and not replace Met Police enforcement of excessive traffic speeds in the borough – and is a direct response to complaints from local people who support greater levels of enforcement – especially on quieter residential streets where police enforcement is rare. Serious cases of speeding could be referred to the police for consideration of prosecution.

The scheme has now been backed by the RAC and its road safety spokesperson Simon Williams.

Referring specifically to the council’s pilot initiative he said: “One of the biggest complaints about 20mph limits is the fact they are rarely enforced which leads to poor compliance. This scheme, on two stretches of road which currently have far too many speeders, has the potential to dramatically improve compliance which has to be a positive road safety step.

“While the thought of councils beginning to enforce speed limits instead of the police may be worrying to some, it could be just what’s needed to make 20mph limits more effective. Arguably, fining people with penalty charge notices instead of immediately issuing fixed penalty notices and putting points on licences could be a fairer way of dealing with the problem, particularly as so many drivers tell us they find it hard to drive at 20mph.

“We would, however, like to see those drivers who speed excessively referred to the police for prosecution as they present a much greater risk to pedestrian and cyclist safety. Consideration should also be given to those who regularly break the limit as it would be very wrong if more affluent drivers continued to disregard 20mph limits just because they can easily afford to pay the fines.”

Council leader Cllr Simon Hogg has welcomed the organisation’s backing. He said: “It’s great that the RAC supports our pilot scheme and recognises the role it could play in making our roads safer. To have received this backing from an organisation that represents motorists shows we are doing the right thing.

“Our sole objective is to make our roads safer for all - drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. We hope we never have to issue a fine because all drivers obey the speed limit. That’s our sole aim and it’s pleasing that the RAC supports this.”

Traffic studies conducted recently over an eight-week period found that one in four vehicles broke the speed limit in Priory Lane while in Wimbledon Park Road it was one in five.

The Wandsworth scheme will get underway shortly and continue for upto eight months using an experimental traffic order. Offences will be caught on camera and for an initial four week period only, warning letters will be sent to the vehicle’s owners. After this initial period expires, penalty charge notices (PCNs) will be sent instead. The PCN will impose a fine of £130, with a 50 per cent discount if paid within 14 days. Under the council scheme, however, offenders will not receive penalty points on their licence.

Money received from fines will be ‘ringfenced’ and ploughed back into road safety initiatives in the borough.

If the Wandsworth pilot is judged a success other councils in London and elsewhere are likely to follow suit.

Action on Hungerford traffic has been demanded after a video showed a woman and child narrowly avoiding almost certain death.

The two are seen standing outside Snippits barbers at 59 High Street seconds before a horrific smash at that very spot.

Just as they moved on, a vehicle ploughed into the premises on Tuesday afternoon, December 13, with such force that serious structural damage was caused.

The dramatic doorbell camera footage was screened at a full town council meeting on Tuesday.

Town mayor Helen Simpson said: "That footage is just harrowing."

High Street resident Helen Armstrong, who recorded the footage, told the meeting: "We'd be having a completely different conversation if that woman and child had been there a moment later.

"We need to ensure the safety of children; it's not just the top end of the High Street but the bottom end as well.

"We need to find a way of reducing the speed limit.

"My little girl doesn't sleep in her bedroom because it faces the High Street; I don't want her to be hit by a lorry."

Mrs Armstrong said a 'pinch point' or speed bumps should be introduced.

Another resident told the meeting: "I've had a number of near misses when walking with a pram and so many people are voicing concern.

"So where's the risk assessment and strategy?"

Chairman of the town council's highways and transport committee Nick Schlanker also raised the issue of the red telephone box restricting motorists' view and the lorries which regularly strike The Plume pub.

He added: "Someone drove into the chip shop recently; there's ridiculous amounts of speeding on the common.

"We need a strategy for the town; we've got a speeding problem and we need West Berkshire Council's help to fix it."

Town councillor Jerry Keates said lorries used the High Street as a "rat run" between other towns and said residents were "eternally frustrated" by a lack of action by the highways authority, West Berkshire Council.

Women in Bolton have shared their fears of children being hit by cars while on busy roads where speeding regularly happens.

At a Police and Communities Together (PACT) meeting for women only, mums spoke to representatives of the council and the police about the growing speeding problem in the town with Halliwell singled out.

In addition, reports had been made of intimidating driver behaviour, damage to side mirrors of parked cars, as well as illegally parked cars without adequate pavement space for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Mr Bannan has issued a plea to authorities for potential traffic calming measures.

He said: "An example of the potentially beneficial effect this would have is the impact that a small traffic island has in the middle of the high street on the approach from Bramford.

"Traffic from this direction generally ignores the large 30mph signage on both sides of the road about half a mile from the village but tends to break at the island as it had a direct impact on their driving space

"Something similar is required on all approaches to the village and a form of traffic and parking management infrastructure along the high street.

"In addition, the half mile between Bramford’s 40mph zone and Sproughton’s 30mph zone where the national speed limit applies needs to be changed to a 40mph zone."

Suffolk County Councillor Christopher Hudson, who represents the Belstead Brook ward, called the issue "the highway to hell".
Earlier this year, traffic snarled up around Sproughton and the surrounding areas after a boat became stuck navigating through the village.

He added that "far too big vehicles drive through the tiny little streets" of Sproughton, making the situation "lethal".

He said: "We've got all kinds of problems there, including urine bottles thrown out of the windows because there's no toilet facilities for the drivers.

"It's a lethal problem that, I believe, could be mitigated if we had better traffic management."

"As a county councillor, I think we should be able to put a control flow in on the road. I know it takes longer to arrange that, but what’s going on now in this little village, I'd describe as being the highway to hell."

A spokesperson for National Highways said that they "carefully consider" any diversion route and these are agreed in partnership with Suffolk County Council and Suffolk Police.
"When it has been necessary to divert traffic through Sproughton, we have taken a number of steps to ensure the safety of those living locally.

"This has included a temporary 20 mph speed limit, traffic signals to regulate vehicles through the narrow High Street as well as utilising speed camera vans.
"At times there has been no alternative diversion routes and we remain very grateful for people's patience when additional traffic has been diverted through the village."

A Suffolk Police spokesperson added the force wanted to reassure residents over the distress of anti social driving and how they can report it.

The spokesperson said: "We want to encourage people to report specific incidents to us and will always endeavour to respond effectively. "Members of the public can assist us by recording the registration details of the vehicles involved in inappropriate and anti-social driving, along with a description of the vehicles and its occupants.

A councillor said speeding is an issue in Warndon Villages - but the parish council is doing its best to tackle it.

Cllr Stephen Hodgson is in charge of two Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs) owned and operated by Warndon Parish Council.

He said the newer of the two signs, which was moved to Plantation Drive in June, is solar-powered and allows him to download speed data via a smartphone app.

“It can record both ingoing traffic and outgoing traffic - and the figures are much worse for those drivers who can’t see the sign.

“When a driver is warned by the sign that they are breaking the speed limit they will often slow down.
“Last month, the proportion of drivers speeding was much worse than it has been and that is of concern.

“But the signs are important because they give us statistical evidence of that.”

Cllr Hodgson said there is a problem with “joyriding” on some of the A-roads that surround Warndon Villages, including Parsonage Way, Trotshill Way and Nunnery Way.

“The council has no responsibility for those roads,” he said.

“We concentrate on the ‘Drives’ - Plantation Drive, Dugdale Drive, Mill Wood Drive etc.

“This is where we get most of the speeding as an issue. Plantation Drive is a long, straight road, it’s quite wide and drivers tend to pick up speed.

“These are the places where we place our SIDs and where the policing teams will monitor speed.

“I like to keep the signpost in one location for a few months so you can see a trend. You do see the speeds drop off and then it levels off. That’s when it’s time to move the SID somewhere else.”

Cllr Hodgson said the council has tried other things to reduce speeding in Warndon, including installing white parish gates at the end of some roads.

“They’re meant to make the road narrower, but I’m not sure how effective they’ve been,” he said. “It was the right thing to try them, though.”

And police say tackling speeding in Warndon Villages is one of their top priorities.

David George filmed cars driving past a new radar speed sign in Plantation Drive and says very few cars stuck to the road’s 30mph limit.

His video shows a number of cars going over the limit. The sign flags their speeds in red, including one car clocked at 44mph.

“There’s a complete disregard to speed within the area with the added fact, this is around school time,” said Mr George.

“This video is just a glimpse of what I saw. I stood there for maybe 15 minutes and I’ll say about 1 out of 20 cars stuck to the correct speed limit.”

“It’s something I’ve noticed ever since I moved here five or six years ago.”

Mr George said he has become more aware of the problem in recent months while walking back from taking his daughter to school.

“This is an area where there are a lot of kids walking down small walkways and on pavements - to see this, and being so near a school, it’s really sad to see,” he said.

“We see a young lad riding his bike to school most mornings and you just think, it would only take one driver not concentrating at that speed. It doesn’t bear thinking about.”

Mr George said the presence of the radar sign, which has an LED display and shows drivers how fast they are going, does not seem to slow people down.

“The worrying thing with a lot of drivers is that even when the screen tells them they are going over the limit, there is no attempt to slow down.

“Before Covid you would see the odd speed camera dotted around but since Covid, it’s really only the one van down by the hospital.

“Something needs to be done.”

Sergeant Brian Simpkins, of the Warndon safer neighbourhood policing team, said: “We have not received any videos of cars speeding or driving dangerously in Plantation Drive but would urge any drivers with appropriate dash-cam to make reports via the operation snap part of our website.

"We are though, already aware of issues in the area and speed enforcement campaigns are already scheduled to take place today and Saturday in Plantation Drive and also on the A4440.

“Speeding is something that is regularly brought up by our local residents in meetings with them as something they want us to address.

"Our team will be acting on these concerns raised as part of our policing promise which is why you will often see speed enforcement campaigns carried out by your local safer neighbourhood team at hot spot areas where we receive these complaints."

The device known as ‘Tru Cam’ is being used by police in the UK including in Gloucestershire where several drivers will receive speeding fines in the post without having been pulled over by police. Officers from Gloucestershire Constabulary were seen deploying the camera last weekend..

Now seven motorists will receive fines after being caught with the new speed gun, reported Gloucestershire Live.

A post on the Stroud Police Twitter account read: "Stroud Neighbourhood Policing Team has been out this weekend with the TRU CAM.

"This allows officers to carry out speed checks without the need to stop vehicles to issue a ticket. PCSOs monitored Folly Lane, Bisley Old Road and Merrywalks.

"Seven drivers will be receiving fines for excess speed."

The device known as ‘Tru Cam’ is being used by police in the UK including in Gloucestershire where several drivers will receive speeding fines in the post without having been pulled over by police. Officers from Gloucestershire Constabulary were seen deploying the camera last weekend..
