The desktop can be easily changed. It's the operating system that you
should check out.

The panel can also be moved from the left side to the bottom using MX
Tweak, a tool for customizing the look and feel to your taste.

Download MX Linux, put it on a USB stick and boot from the USB stick.
You can run it from there to check it out, you don't have to install it.

This install went without a problem on my Win 11
laptop, and the game I tried seems to play okay. No
internet required to play, of core and no ads. Thanks,
Bob!

I was going to try Winaero's Win 10?style Task Manager,
but at the last minute I decided to stick with Win 11's
a bit longer and try to get used to it. In general I
don't like to load too many third-party replacements of
Windows files because if I then have some sort of
problem there are more things to troubleshoot.

D'oh! I actually installed that a few weeks ago, tried
it, and then forgot about it.

Weird. My System Restore is still turned on. And I
definitely went through updates last week.

Having given myself a reminder about Winaero Tweaks, I ran it, got an
update and applied it and went thought the options again. There are a
few new ones which I found useful too, so I applied those and then
backed it up again.

LOL! No problem. I've done the same thing with more than one program

The experience isn't perfect for a machine that was just released, but it tends to get stellar within a year or two. However, it has traditionally and continues to struggle with waking from sleep if your machine supports S3. However, since today's machines are deployed with S3 disabled and S0 standard, it won't struggle at all.

In Windows world, we call this "S0ic" so it will not be confused with plain S0.
"S0ic" has the unique capacity to run anywhere from S0 thru S3, and
remains responsive while saving power. At one time, only MS put it on Surface,
as the other manufacturers were not convinced it was "ripe yet".

Surface Others
S0ic \ S0
\__ responsive S1
/ S3 Sleep (unresponsive, except to restore itself to S0)
S4 S4 Hibernate
S5 S5 Soft Off

Linux might not be ready for "s0ic" machines either. This is
not as simple as it looks. It would be a lot of work for someone.

*******

When your product does not work right, there is a language they
use, for coding ACPI objects. Most of us know these things by
their object names, like "Power Button". Pressing the power button
on the front, that accesses a subroutine written in this language.

https://uefi.org/htmlspecs/ACPI_Spec_6_4_html/19_ASL_Reference/ACPI_Source_Language_Reference.html?highlight=acpi%20source%20language

If a developer at Lenovo, makes a mistake in that language,
maybe it prevents successful recovery from sleep. There are
claims of finding "quirks" in all sorts of equipment, where
stuff like that is not coded properly.

This is different than the hardware design issues. When
you Sleep S3 a computer, the RAM voltage is actually
turned down a tiny bit, and the sticks are put in AutoRefresh.
AutoRefresh is a Command on the Command bus, just before
the sticks are put to sleep. (This is to stretch the battery
as long as possible.) A failure at the hardware level, can
also doom S3 recovery. The differences can sometimes be seen
in the timing (if the machine lights up and seems to be doing
something, it might be past the point where the hardware did it).

There's all sorts of details down there, too many for me to follow.
And sometimes, that's the area that broke the recovery from S3.

https://www.usenix.org/legacy/publications/library/proceedings/usenix02/tech/freenix/full_papers/watanabe/watanabe_html/node4.html

There are multiple 500 page documents awaiting ACPI noobs.
You will have to buy reading glasses, as a start. And if it's
a cold day, you can burn copies of the ACPI spec to keep warm.
